Tankie Man: The Pro-Democracy Hong Kongers Standing Up to Western Communists

When a still unidentified man stepped in front of a line of tanks that were leaving Tiananmen Square the day after the massacre that killed around 1,000 student protesters, it was at the risk of his life. The same cannot be said for modern day pro-democracy activists, who are standing up to modern day tankies — that’s Western, often young, supporters of communist, authoritarian regimes — considering most of the battling is taking place online.

Chinese University Professor Participates in Beijing's #ThousandTalentsProgram by Developing Scientific Expertise for China in the #US

In the United States, Song-Guo Zheng, a 58 year-old rheumatology professor and researcher with strong ties to China, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for making false statements to federal authorities as part of an immunology research fraud scheme. He admitted his plan to use approximately $4.1 million in grants from the U.S. National Institute of Health (#NIH) to develop China’s expertise in the areas of rheumatology and immunology.

Zheng was arrested Friday, May 22, 2020, in Anchorage, Alaska, when he was fleeing to China. He was carrying three large bags, one small suitcase and a briefcase containing two laptops, three cell phones, several USB drives, several silver bars, expired Chinese passports for his family, deeds for property in China and other items.

Zheng was a professor of internal medicine who led a team conducting autoimmune research at The Ohio State University and Pennsylvania State University; however, since 2013, Zheng had been participating in a #ChineseTalentPlan, a program established by the Chinese government to recruit individuals with knowledge or access to foreign technology intellectual property.

Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the Justice Department said, “American research funding is provided by the American taxpayer for the benefit of American society — not as an illicit gift to the Chinese government."

China Is Building Entire Villages in Another Country’s Territory

By Robert Barnett

//In October 2015, China announced that a new village, called Gyalaphug in Tibetan or Jieluobu in Chinese, had been established in the south of the #Tibet Autonomous Region (#TAR)...

#Gyalaphug is, however, different: It is in #Bhutan. Wu and a retinue of officials, police, and journalists had crossed an international border. They were in a 232-square-mile area claimed by China since the early 1980s but internationally understood as part of Lhuntse district in northern Bhutan. The Chinese officials were visiting to celebrate their success, unnoticed by the world, in planting settlers, security personnel, and military infrastructure within territory internationally and historically understood to be Bhutanese...

This new construction is part of a major drive by Chinese President #XiJinPing since 2017 to fortify the Tibetan borderlands, a dramatic escalation in China’s long-running efforts to outmaneuver India and its neighbors along their Himalayan frontiers. In this case, China doesn’t need the land it is settling in Bhutan: Its aim is to force the Bhutanese government to cede territory that China wants elsewhere in Bhutan to give Beijing a military advantage in its struggle with New Delhi.

Gyalaphug is now one of three new villages (two already occupied, one under construction), 66 miles of new roads, a small hydropower station, two Communist Party administrative centers, a communications base, a disaster relief warehouse, five military or police outposts, and what are believed to be a major signals tower, a satellite receiving station, a military base, and up to six security sites and outposts that China has constructed in what it says are parts of Lhodrak in the TAR but which in fact are in the far north of Bhutan....

Today all of the Menchuma Valley and most of the Beyul are controlled by China. Both are being settled. Together, they constitute 1 percent of Bhutan’s territory; if it were to lose them, it would be comparable to the United States losing Maine or Kentucky...

In Chinese, the term for so-called salami-slicing tactics—slowly cutting off  piece by piece of other nations’ territory—is can shi, or “nibbling like a silkworm.” It’s serious business: The belief that India was gnawing at fragments of China’s territory drove Mao to launch the 1962 Sino-Indian War. And the converse of the phrase is jing tun, “swallowing like a whale.” The small bites of the silkworm can turn into crushing jaws...//

The US supports Australia in repealing the “Belt and Road” agreement, saying Australia is the victim of China’s coercive diplomacy

Australian federal government repealed “Belt and Road” memorandum and “framework agreement” between the Victorian state government and China. The decision has caused China discontent and renewed tension between China and Australia. United Stated indicated their support to Australia’s decision on Thursday (22 April), described Australia as a victim of China’s coercive diplomacy, which borne tremendous toll.

On Wednesday (21 April), Australian Foreign Minister Payne used her powers conferred by Foreign Affairs (State and Territorial Arrangements) Act 2020 passed late last year, to cancel the “Belt and Road” memorandum and “framework agreement” between Victorian state government and China. US Spokesperson of State Council Ned Price, when asked whether US will take a similar action, or has US spoken to Australia about the move during regular press conference, responded “this is a decision made by the Australian Government”. He continued by saying that US will continue to stand with the people of Australia for the brunt of the PRC’s coercive behavior. Price said that Australia government's cancellation of agreements with China, Iran and Syria demonstrated that Australia is focused on protecting its national interest from all international concerns.

AP Exclusive: Full-blown boycott pushed for Beijing Olympics

Groups alleging human-rights abuses against minorities in China are calling for a full-blown boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, a move likely to ratchet up pressure on the International Olympic Committee, athletes, sponsors and sports federations.

A coalition representing Uyghurs, Tibetans, residents of Hong Kong and others issued a statement Monday calling for the boycott, eschewing lesser measures that had been floated like “diplomatic boycotts" and further negotiations with the IOC or China.

“The time for talking with the IOC is over,” Lhadon Tethong of the Tibet Action Institute said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press. “This cannot be games as usual or business as usual; not for the IOC and not for the international community.”

Fraud, force and genocide: An extraordinary day in the annals of Australia’s national life

Genocidal? Who, us? It was an extraordinary day in the annals of Australia’s national life. China’s representative in Australia opened his home to reporters on Wednesday to persuade them that the Beijing government wanted only the best for its Uighur ethnic minority in the northwestern province of Xinjiang.

The government of the US, the parliaments of Canada and the Netherlands and Britain’s House of Lords have damned China’s treatment of its Uighur people as the gravest possible crime against humanity – genocide. Neither Australia’s government nor Parliament has done so. Yet.

Nearly 6,000 Hongkongers Apply for
#Immigration in #Canada in Just Three Months

After Beijing's forceful imposition of #NationalSecurityLaw in Hong Kong, several countries have decided to provide Hongkongers shelter schemes.

From the latest figures released by the Canadian Immigration Department on 20 May 2021, a total of 5,727 applications have been received as of 18 May.

When the scheme was introduced on 8 Feb, 2021, the same month recorded 524 applications. Currently, it has now amounted to around 6,000 applications in total.

"We feel very encouraging by having such a great number of applications. We hope more productive Hongkongers can come and contribute to Canada through this innovative scheme," said #AlexanderCohen, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada press secretary.

Under the new policy introduced by the Trudeau cabinet in February, any Hong konger who graduated from a Canadian university or university overseas will be able to apply for a three-year working permit in Canada.

"The ties that bind Canada and Hong Kong run deep. The young Hongkongers are now eyeing for international opportunities and we hope they can choose Canada,’ Cohen said.

WHO Experts Review the Severe Side Effects Data of Sinovac, Commented "Low Credibility" for Elderly

WHO experts indicated 5 May that the Chinese Sinovac for COVID-19 has protection to adults who are under 60. However, there is a lack of data on the risk of serious side effects from vaccines, with “low credibility” for patients over aged 60 and with chronic illnesses. The expert group even referred to the severe side effect data of Sinovac on the elderly and patients with chronic illness as “very low” credibility.

The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) in WHO evaluated the Phase 3 clinical test data of Sinovac in China, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, and Chile. They are very confident about the effectiveness of two doses of Sinovac in preventing adults aged 18-59, moderately confident about the severe side effect data on adults aged 59 years or younger. However, for those aged 60 years or older and patients with chronic diseases, the risk data of patients with severe side effects after vaccination is classified as “low credibility”, which means that the test data of Sinovac cannot determine the risks of serious side effects of Sinovac on the elderly and patients.

Chinese buying up land around military bases in Japan: Report

Japan has unearthed at least 700 Chinese-funded instances of plots of land changing hands near military bases, in a government investigation prompted by security concerns, a newspaper reports.

The investments and purchase plans were driven by Chinese-led foreign corporations and could pose a risk to Japan’s safety, the Sankei Shimbun reported Thursday.

Remanded Former Pro-democracy Legislator Chu Hoi-Dick: I'll never forget the beautiful times I spent working with my teammates

On May 20, 2021 in Hong Kong, former legislator, citizen journalist and pro-democracy activist #ChuHoiDick -- who was nicknamed the “king of votes” for his 2016 election success, but is currently detained in Stanley Prison -- announced through his facebook page that he would no longer participate in politics, as he believed that he would not enjoy any freedom for a long period of time. Chu also decided to disband the "Team Chu Hoi-dick of New Territories West" group.

The group members including Yuen Long district councillor Lai Kwok-wing said the decision would not affect the community work run by individual members, as the group has never been a political party.

Chu said he is preparing for a long time behind bars, as he is currently charged in 6 criminal cases including the violation of the #NationalSecurityLaw for his involvement in the pro-democracy camp's primary election for Legco.

The statement ends with Chu saying that "he will never forget the beautiful times he spent working together with his teammates. He wishes everyone peace".

Brinken: Asserting domestic jurisdiction doesn't grant the right to enslave, torture, disappear, and ethnically cleanse people

The United Nations Security Council held a video conference on Friday (7May). The US Secretary of State Antony Brinken said at the meeting, that asserting domestic jurisdiction doesn't grant any state the right to enslave, torture, disappear, and ethnically cleanse their people. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi accused countries of defining international rules as a “patent or privilege of the few.”

China chaired the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for May and held this meeting on Friday to discuss multilateralism. The meeting was held online, on the theme of multilateral cooperation against the pandemic, global warming and other common threats.

Brinken stressed the need for countries to uphold international commitments, focus on human rights and respect for the principle of sovereign equality. “When U.N. member states – particularly permanent members of the Security Council – flout these rules and block attempts to hold accountable those who violate international law, it sends the message that others can break those rules with impunity,” he said, “Asserting domestic jurisdiction doesn't give any state a blank check to enslave, torture, disappear, ethnically cleanse their people, or violate their human rights in any other way.”
