More Journalists and Producers Quit RTHK as Management Tighten Grip

Paul Lee, the executive producer of "Hong Kong Connection", resigned on May 3, 2021.

"Hong Kong Connection" is an award winning documentary programme of the public broadcaster RTHK in Hong Kong. The programme is known for its in-depth analysis and journalistic integrity.

The cause of Lee's resignation was reportedly related to the management's refusal to show new episodes on the 2019 Yuen Long mob attack and the commemorations of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

The management has censored many programmes since Patrick Li became the head of RTHK.

It was said that the producers of "Hong Kong Connection" were told that the programme could only cover livelihood stories in the future, instead of current affairs.

An episode of Hong Kong Connection about the aforemention Yuen Long mob attack just won the Chinese-language documentary prize at the 2021 Human Rights Press Awards. Six RTHK staff received accolades from the same award, but the station announced that they would not received the awards.

Army of fake fans boosts China’s messaging on Twitter

China’s ruling Communist Party has opened a new front in its long, ambitious war to shape global public opinion: Western social media.

Liu Xiaoming, who recently stepped down as China’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, is one of the party’s most successful foot soldiers on this evolving online battlefield. He joined Twitter in October 2019, as scores of Chinese diplomats surged onto Twitter and Facebook, which are both banned in China.

Since then, Liu has deftly elevated his public profile, gaining a following of more than 119,000 as he transformed himself into an exemplar of China’s new sharp-edged “wolf warrior” diplomacy, a term borrowed from the title of a top-grossing Chinese action movie.

UK and US criticise WHO's Covid report and accuse China of withholding data

The US and the UK have sharply criticised a World Health Organization report into the beginnings of the coronavirus pandemic in Wuhan, implicitly accusing China of “withholding access to complete, original data and samples”.

The statement, also signed by 12 other countries including Australia and Canada, came hard on the heels of an admission on Tuesday by the head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, that the investigation was “not extensive enough” and experts had struggled to access raw information during their four-week visit to Wuhan in January.

HK Authorities Freeze
#JimmyLai's assets under #NationalSecurityLaw

On the evening of May 14, 2021, the Hong Kong government has frozen Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai's personal assets under the national security law. This is the first time the authorities exercise this power, since the national security law was directly imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong without passing through the city's legislature in June 2020.

Lai is currently serving a 14-month sentence after being convicted of taking part in "unauthorised assemblies" during the pro-democracy movement in August 2019.

In a press release, the Security Bureau said Lai's shares of Next Digital Limited (282) and assets of three companies in local banks were all frozen. The value of the property frozen was not disclosed.

Apple Daily said Lai holds a 71 percent stake in #NextDigital, but the incident does not involve the account of Next Digital and the finances of #AppleDaily.

Whereas Article 6 of Hong Kong Basic Law indicates that the Hong Kong SAR government "protect the right of private ownership of property in accordance with law", the Security Bureau cited Article 43 of the national security law, claiming that “relevant persons and organisations must not, directly or indirectly, deal with certain property which is reasonably suspected to be related to offences endangering national security”.

Moreover, the Secretary for Security has the power to order police officers to seize property if he suspects it may be removed from Hong Kong.

“I am lost in Hong Kong”:
#YellowRaincoatMan

On May 10, 2021, the Coroner’s Court in Hong Kong has opened the inquest into the death of “yellow raincoat man” #MarcoLeung Ling-kit, the first martyred Hong Kong protestor, who on June 15, 2019, fell from a scaffolding at Pacific Place mall in Admiralty after unfurling a banner with the Five Demands of the protests.

Leung’s parents were absent from court.

Inside the court room, the personal belongings of Leung were exhibited. These include a banner that read "Fully withdraw extradition to China, we are not rioters" and his famous yellow poncho displaying the line "Carrie Lam kills Hong Kong, Corrupt Cop is Coldblooded".
Apart from these, there is also a black T-shirt with the words “I am lost in Hong Kong” and a notebook where he wrote “I am frustrated by this Hong Kong.”

A clip of the incident was shown in court, in which Democrat Roy Kwong and other citizens tried to persuade Leung not to commit suicide. “Walk back!” “We still have tomorrow. Let’s march together tomorrow!”

Macro Leung died on June 15, 2019, a day before a march which sees 2 million Hongkongers taking to the street, the largest the city has ever witnessed. He has since become an icon in Hong Kong’s resistance movement.

New Citizenship Subject deems Britain's Rule over Hong Kong as Illegal Occupation

Citizenship and Social Development is slowly replacing Liberal Studies across Hong Kong’s schools, starting from next academic year.

Ling Kee Publishing provided schools with e-edition teaching materials. In the “One Country, Two Systems” Module, it states China always holds sovereignty over Hong Kong. “Over 100 years before the Handover, Britain’s rule over Hong Kong is an occupation breaching International law.

4 offences under the National Security Law is also included. “National Security Law ensures the continuity of the 'One Country, Two Systems' model.”

Marshall Cavendish Education also provided schools with sample textbooks, in which civil disobedience and Benny Tai’s “4 levels of rule of law” can be found. After its release, the Education Bureau immediately sent a notice stressing the book has not undergone official review.

On the contrary, after Ling Kee’s release, Education Bureau said as they did not consider the material a textbook. Its publication is under protection due to Hong Kong’s freedom of the press and does not require notification or review procedures from the Bureau. The EDB also states that material pertaining to China affairs and Hong Kong’s constitutional rule must be in compliance with the PRC Constitution and the Basic Law.

Greta Thunberg and China bump heads over emissions

Greta Thunberg has made an enemy out of China which says she is uneducated and prone to being “manipulated” after the activist said climate change can’t be solved unless Beijing makes a drastic course correction on emissions.

“Thunberg, who at age 15 started skipping school on Fridays for her climate protests, is merely 18 years old this year,” Chinese propaganda mouthpiece the Global Times said.

“She is short of sufficient academic knowledge study, and lack of sound self-judgment capability.

“Girl like her is prone to be affected or even manipulated by some political forces.

Beijing Is Getting Better at Disinformation on Global Social Media

When China-linked networks of social media bots and trolls appeared on the global disinformation scene in 2019, most analysts concluded that their impact and reach were fairly limited, particularly in terms of engagement by real users and relative to more sophisticated actors in this realm, like the Russian regime. As many China watchers anticipated, that assessment now seems to be changing.

Several in-depth investigations published over the past two months by academic researchers, think tanks, news outlets, and cybersecurity companies have shed light on the evolution of disinformation campaigns originating in China. Some offer new insights on campaigns that peaked last spring, while others analyze more recent messaging, tactics, and accounts that have emerged since October 2020.
