"This is a Hong Kong I'm not familiar with": #Chickeeduck Owner Recounts Police Raid on Newly-Opened Branch

After national security police raided #Chickeeduck 's new Tsuen Wan branch on May 6, 2021, store owner #HerbertChow recounted the ordeal in English to reporters at the store.

About 30 officers entered the premises with a search warrant, he said, claiming that the store may have products that violated the National Security Law.

Although the police only searched for products, all store staff were detained and not allowed to leave, even at Chow's request.

Many customers left the store when the police began surrounding and cordoning off the shop, and police took down the ID card numbers of the customers before letting them go.

Chow and four other employees remained in the store as the policemen conducted their search for about an hour, opening bags and carton boxes. The police found nothing. However, one senior officer told Chow that although the police were not confiscating any evidence, the investigation was not finished.

He gave Chow a verbal warning: "In the future, if you violate the National Security Law, we will prosecute you."

When Chow asked him whether he had violated any law, the officer only answered, "We have no responsibility to answer your question." "I just want to know whether I can continue business," Chow said.

Since the police did not remove any questionable items, he reasoned, everything in the store could be assumed to be legal, and the store could continue to open for business. "So have I violated any law?" Chow asked, "Should I continue, or should I take away some stuff?" The officer only said again that they were not obliged to answer.

"So this is Hong Kong," said a flabbergasted Chow. "The national security department is so powerful, they can come in, interrupt your business for one hour, take your customers' ID card numbers, and they don't have to explain.“

"This is a Hong Kong I'm not familiar with. I've been living here for 57 years; this is the first time I've experienced this."

Chow is resolute in continuing his business despite the harassment, though his view of the police force is quickly dimming.

"I used to tell youngsters that there are good people in the police force. I'm changing [my stance]."

Chickens Hatched from Cooked Eggs: Claims Article in Pay-to-Publish Academic Journal from China

A Chinese academic journal published a research paper claiming success in hatching chicks from cooked chicken eggs.

The article claimed that trained students used "super-psychological consciousness energy" to turn cooked eggs back to raw within 20 minutes. The chicks hatched from these eggs would even grow up to be egg-laying chickens, the article claimed.

The article had gone viral on Chinese social media, with many netizens lambasting it for being "anti-science".

The journal has published 3 articles on the topic in total, each detailing different aspects of the egg-hatching experiment.

According to interviews by Chinese media, the editor of the publishing journal revealed that each paper is published at a price of 750RMB, even emphasizing that "as long as you pay, anything can be printed."

Public records show that the journal "Portrait of Geography"
(寫真地理) is under the supervision of Jilin Provincial News, Radio, Film and Television Bureau of the #PRC. It is a nationally-approved periodical, under the category of "emerging" geography publications.

The said article details the experiment being undertaken by 10 students at a vocational training school in Zhengzhou, China.

10 experts and parents were on hand to observe and witness the experiment, including the author and the school's principal Ge Ping, as well as the chief physician of a provincial teaching hospital.

In response to press inquiries, Ge asserted that the experiment was carried out by herself, and all details described in the article are true.

She further claimed that she had trained all her students into developing supernatural powers; not only could they restore life to a cooked egg, "they could take any leaf, tear it apart, then heal it up again." The students were also said to be able to "take pictures with their phones when they have been powered off."

Former Tory leader sighs on the naive misjudgement of the West regarding the Chineses’ ongoing autocracy

“Sometimes people would forget that China was once a closed country.” Former leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom Sir Iain Duncan Smith talked about his time in Beijing 30 years ago in his interview with Stand News. Back then, China was still closed and western faces were still rare to see in Beijing.

To date, that was his last visit to China and it was probably his last.

New Zealand draws back from calling Chinese abuses of Uyghurs genocide

New Zealand’s parliament will not debate a motion that would label the abuses of the Uyghur people in Xinjiang, China, as acts of genocide.

Parliament opted instead on Tuesday to water down the language, and discuss concerns about human rights abuses in the region in more general terms.

It is expected the new motion will pass unanimously on Wednesday. However, it marks no deviation from the country’s current position.

A new policy for Hong Kong

It was welcome news that Joe Biden has considered creation of an “Asia tsar” for the White House to coordinate policy in the face of challenges posed by China. However, to fully signal to Beijing that its authoritarian expansionist aims must be halted and reversed, the new administration should consider devising a new foreign policy for Hong Kong.

When President Trump suspended the special treatment of Hong Kong as a trading entity different from the rest of China, the United States harmed its relations with the former British colony. But there is no indication that a new policy distinct from an overall China strategy will be created for Hong Kong. As an exiled dissident from the city, I believe a new policy is critical since it continues to serve American interests to have Hong Kong remain different in both character and politics from the rest of China.

Private Screening of "Siege of CUHK" Cancelled in HK; Government Still Sends Warning Letter

The Hong Kong Social Workers General Union (#HKSWGU) cancelled a scheduled screening of the documentary "Siege of CUHK" for its staff on May 1, 2021. The union had subsequently notified the staff who had signed up.

The Government's Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration, however, still hand delivered a warning letter to the Union's office the day before the screening.

The warning emphasized that the film had not received a certificate of exemption or approval, and screening it would be illegal and punishable by a HK$200,000 fine and jail time of up to 1 year.

"Siege of CUHK", produced by HK Feature Limited, documents the clashes at Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) between police and the pro-democracy protesters during the 2019 Anti-ELAB movement.

Responding to media inquiry, Director General of the union Hui Lai Ming said that she felt very tired, and did not comment on the actions of the authorities or the police. She only said that in the future, "we'll show what we can, and not show what we can't."

University of Alberta forges close research ties with China despite warnings from intelligence agencies

The University of Alberta is carrying out extensive scientific collaboration with China that involves sharing and transferring research in strategically important areas such as nanotechnology, biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

In some cases, professors and researchers at the university have set up companies in joint ventures with Chinese companies and state institutions to commercialize Canadian-developed technology.

The University of Alberta declined to discuss its research activities with China other than to say that “we have received no directives related to China” from the federal government to stop its engagement with Chinese institutions.

A future in which China no longer needs the world but the world cannot spin without it’

Chinese President Xi Jinping is probably the only national leader in the world who has managed to consolidate power despite facing the threat of the novel coronavirus.

Helped by the Chinese Communist party’s authoritarian one-party rule, he will continue to wield power as the country’s supreme leader over the next five years. Mr Xi’s extended reign and his ambitions could prove problematic for the incoming US president, Joe Biden.

The Chinese leader has been laying out his vision of a China-centric world since earlier this year. The speech he delivered at an early April meeting was recently published in the November 1 edition of party journal Qiushi.

Chinese University of Hong Kong Deletes Content on General Education Salon

While the public broadcaster #RTHK was deleting programmes on YouTube, the General Education (#GE) Salon of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) has also been found deleting its own videos on its Youtube channel.

It used to be a platform where professors share their knowledge relating to practical experiences in Hong Kong. The videos deleted include “1984 and the Brave New World” , “On Liberty” and Benny Tai's “the Rule of Law Culture”

Professor Chow Po-chung, a speaker on the channel and well-known public intellectual, is shocked by the news. “These are a kind of public resource! Of course I wish they can be left undeleted.”

Olympics sponsors duck questions over Beijing 2022 as boycott calls grow

Multinational companies sponsoring the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games are evading questions about their participation as China comes under intense pressure over the repression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

As calls for a boycott of the event grow among activists, companies are increasingly being urged to take a stand over Xinjiang — at the same time as the Chinese government has encouraged boycotts of brands that speak out.

Letters from human rights groups have gone unanswered and 11 of the 13 companies that have major sponsorship deals with the International Olympic Committee that include the Beijing games did not comment when asked by the Financial Times if they were reconsidering their plans.

Hong Kong democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai denied bail

The Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai has been denied bail, after being charged with colluding with foreign entities under the city’s new national security law.

Lai, who marked his 72nd birthday in jail this week, appeared in court on Saturday handcuffed to a chain around his waist, and led by a police officer.

He was charged on Friday with offences including asking foreign countries to impose sanctions on Hong Kong or China, and taking other “hostile action”, local media sources – including his own newspaper, Apple Daily – reported. The charges are reportedly based on things he has tweeted and commentaries he has published, as well as interviews with foreign media.
