‘We don’t know if he is alive’: Uighur woman speaks out on jailing of father in Xinjiang

The last time Jewher Ilham’s family saw her father, he had lost 40 pounds and his hair had turned grey.

“He used to be a pretty chubby man and now he has nothing. And all his hair turned grey. But other than that he looked okay. He’s a very strong person, I mean a mentally strong person, or at least that is what I knew of my father. And I hope he can remain the same.”

Ilham Tohti, Jewher’s father (Jewher is an Uighur, a Turkic ethnic group whom take their father’s first name as their surname), is a former economics lecturer from Minzu University, Beijing.

Chinese Communist Party present at many global companies, group says

An international group of lawmakers has shared an apparent list of nearly 2 million Chinese Communist Party members with multiple governments, flagging the fact that many party members are employed by global companies, Nikkei has learned.

Dating back to 2016, the list covers about 80,000 party branches, mainly around Shanghai, along with their members. The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China has distributed it to a number of countries.

The data -- and the furious response to it in some quarters -- underscores the dilemma that companies face in hiring party members. Party membership is highly competitive, making the body a source of exceptional talent. But as suspicion toward China grows, critics warn of the potential economic security risks involved in hiring Beijing loyalists.

EU suspends efforts to ratify controversial investment deal with China

The EU has suspended efforts to ratify an investment deal with China because of tensions between Brussels and Beijing.

The agreement was reached in principle last December but had yet to receive the necessary endorsement from EU institutions, such as the European Parliament.

"We have for the time being [...] suspended some efforts of political awareness on the part of the Commission because it's clear that, in the current situation, with the sanctions of the EU against China and the Chinese counter-sanctions, including against Members of the European Parliament, the environment is not conducive to the ratification of the agreement," Valdis Dombrovskis, executive vice-president of the European Commission, told French news agency AFP in an interview.

Macau and Hong Kong different paths to China. Why?

While Hong Kong seems to have resisted Beijing’s tightening control, Macau has embraced one country, two systems rule.

A tiny former Portuguese colony, Macau, has marked 21 years since its return to China.

It was agreed in 1999 the territory would be governed under the Chinese “one country, two systems” rule, as is the case with Hong Kong.
