#RTHK terminates the contract of critically acclaimed reporter #NabelaQoser

In Hong Kong, the public broadcaster RTHK refused to renew the contract of journalist Nabela Qoser, who is known for her professionalism and critical stance.

Since 2019, the pro-Beijing camp and figures have been attacking Qoser after she raised sharp questions during government press conferences.

Although the station has earlier announced that Qoser was wrongly accused by the complaints, RTHK reopened the investigation in October 2020. Citing the ongoing probe as a reason, RTHK terminated Qoser's civil service contract in January 2021, though she was employed in 2017. The public broadcaster further switched her to a 120-day contract, before terminaring it in May 2021.

Qoser has to leave the station by the end of May 2021.

#RTHK deletes shows from internet, Bao Choy: The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting

//The news has led to concern that the bulk of RTHK‘s archival content — which, for years, has been freely accessible on the two platforms — will no longer be viewable, including episodes that reported on Hong Kong’s political turmoil since the 2019 protests, and the national security law....

Since the arrival the new Director of Broadcasting Patrick Li in March, who has no media background but introduced a massive editorial overhaul, ten RTHK television episodes have been censored before they were broadcast. Meanwhile, at least five top executives have resigned or took early retirement amid a staff exodus.

One episode of the documentary programme Hong Kong Connection – which investigated the July 2019 Yuen Long mob attack near an MTR station – would be among the episodes set to be removed from the internet.//

The US Regulates Broadcaster to Declare Foreign-Sponsored Programs to Increase Transparency and to Prevent Chinese or Russian Propaganda

Federal Communications Commission (FCC), accounting for regulating broadcasting, has a unanimous vote on Thursday (22 April) that television and radio broadcasting must declare the programs sponsored or provided by a foreign government.

Acting Chairman of FCC, Jessical Rosenworcel, stated that FCC recently received countless reports relating to foreign government-sponsored programs. She indicated that FCC knew that foreign entities purchase broadcast time slots across the country. She especially pointed Chinese and Russian out for their government-sponsored programs.

The original policy does not state when and how a foreign government-sponsored program being publicly reported. Under FCC new-passed regulation, if foreign government entities directly or indirectly purchase time slots through television or radio station, they must state during the broadcasting.

FCC stated in the statement, “This regulation will increase the transparency to make sure audience understand foreign government or its representative’s organisations are using atmospheric waves to persuade American”.

China’s surveillance system of ‘social credit’ has expanded globally and is now openly operational in Western Canada.

China’s Orwellian “social credit system” that records the social and financial behaviour of individuals and corporations across China, using a vast surveillance system, has expanded globally, and is now openly operational at the renowned Haidilao hot pot restaurant, in Western Canada.

Ryan Pan, a manager with Haidilao Hot Pot in Vancouver confirmed that over 60 surveillance cameras have been installed in the restaurant at the request of the Haidilao corporation, as part of the social credit system in China. He said that the Vancouver location has 30 tables with two cameras assigned to each table.

When asked specifically why Haidilao required so many cameras to monitor staff and patrons, Ryan Pan said that the cameras were installed to “punish” staff if they didn’t adhere to corporate standards and to “people track”. Pan also said that the video is sent back to China but declined to say why this was, other than to say the reason for this was “secret.”

EXC: Cuomo Adviser Registered As ‘Foreign Agent’ To Lobby For Chinese Communist Party

Daniel Kohns, who also served as Communications Director for Democratic Congressman Mike Honda, leveraged these connections to become Vice President at lobbying behemoth BLJ Worldwide.

In 2018, he was required to file with the Department of Justice’s Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) as a result of him lobbying on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party, specifically the country’s U.S. Embassy.

There, Kohns “provide[d] ongoing public relations services in support of the embassy’s programming and activities” – placing him on the payroll of the repressive Chinese government. That’s the same government that withheld pertinent information regarding COVID-19’s transmission pathways and continues to hide its genome sequence, severely compromising the ability of the world – and especially New York – to respond.

#Lyricist Finds #Hope in #NextGeneration: "The Worst Times Can Bring About the Best Music"

In a TV program aired in Hong Kong on April 23, 2021, the RTHK journalist interviewed critically acclaimed lyricist and scholar #ChowYiuFai about his experiences teaching lyric writing in university in the past 10 years since his return to Hong Kong.

He teaches students to practice their creative process continuously in their daily lives, in order to keep their skills and senses sharp, and not to grow desensitized in their daily routines.

He finds that his students bring him a lot of hope. "When this world has young people like them, how could I give up?"

Chow says that there are always limitations when working in creative fields. His approach to songwriting is to stay true to reality as he knows it, and write within a given premise.

He believes that the worst times can bring about the best music. "When you feel very safe, and the whole world seems at peace, it's a frighteningly apathetic state of mind to be in."

#Philippines foreign minister on #SouthChinaSea dispute

//The Philippine foreign minister on Monday demanded in an expletive-laced Twitter message that China’s vessels get out of disputed waters, the latest exchange in a war of words with Beijing over the South China Sea.

The comments by Teodoro Locsin follow Manila's protests for what it calls the "illegal" presence of hundreds of Chinese boats inside the Philippines 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

"China, my friend, how politely can I put it? Let me see… O…GET THE FUCK OUT," Locsin tweeted on his personal account.

"What are you doing to our friendship? You. Not us. We're trying. You. You're like an ugly oaf forcing your attentions on a handsome guy who wants to be a friend; not to father a Chinese province ...", Locsin said.//

Vancouver mayor suspends meetings with Chinese government officials

Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart has suspended all meeting requests and contact with Chinese government officials, including a recent invitation to meet with China’s ambassador to Canada.

The mayor’s move is a response to China recently announcing sanctions on individuals in the United States and Canada, including friend and Conservative MP Michael Chong.

“It’s threatening and intimidating and I know that he’s taking it in stride, but that’s reaching a new level of hostility — that’s not diplomacy, that’s bullying,” said Stewart, a former NDP MP who released a book with Chong and Liberal MP Scott Simms in 2017 about reforming democracy in Canada.

The West Should Not Abandon Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s freedoms are vanishing before our eyes. The West, not knowing how to respond to Beijing’s de facto annexation of Hong Kong, wonders: isn’t Hong Kong part of China, and isn’t this domestic matter none of our business? This Western passivity is a grave mistake because Chinese aggression in Hong Kong reveals the Beijing regime’s long-term strategy.

The treaty signed between Great Britain and Beijing in 1984 provided for a “restitution” of Hong Kong and the contiguous New Territories, on condition that the former colony would retain its political and judicial independence as an electoral democracy and capitalist system until 2045. The British imagined that China would, by then, have surely left Communism behind. They were doubly wrong.

Wyman Kwok, a former associate professor at Shantou University’s College of Liberal Arts, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in a public place at the Eastern Magistrates' Court in Hong Kong on April 23, 2021.

He was charged as he allegedly gestured and chanted “five demands, not one less” on the road during a protest on May 24, 2020. It was during a large protest on Hong Kong Island against the National Anthem Law and the National Security Law.

The defendant, who was not represented by a lawyer, pleaded his case, saying that he grew up and received his education in Hong Kong, studied at a university in Hong Kong and holds a master's and doctorate degree. He taught at a tertiary institution and from 2010 to 2017 he taught at a University in China.

As he was a professor for critical thinking and philosophy, he explains that his behaviour is biased towards idealism. South Korean Netizens Encourage Hongkongers For "A Better Tomorrow" in the Fight For Freedom

On June 3, 2016, the Korean Pops Orchestra performed the theme song of a 1987-Hong Kong movie A Better Tomorrow II (英雄本色2) at Gyeonggi Arts Center Grand Theater in South Korea.

The theme song was entitled "Running Toward the Days of Future" (奔向未來日子) and was composed by Hong Kong iconic musician Joseph Koo (顧嘉煇).

Together with the movie directed by John Woo, the song has been very popular in South Korea during the 1980s and the 1990s.

In a comment published in January 2021, a netizen explained the sentiment shared by the South Korean population towards this Hong Kong movie:

"Probably, Hongkonger do not understand the reason for popularity of this title song. All most all Korean was depressed due to the military junta in the late 1980 and early 1990. The miserable situation could be found from movies, Tax Driver, 1987 etc.

The counterpart of heroes, Leslie Cheung, Donald Chow Aman Chow and Ti Lung, really really touched the heart of Korean - we can change the life. Now, we are likely to say that... you can change your world as we did."

Other netizens concurred and left words of support for Hongkongers to fight for democracy and freedom in today's context.
