Facebook reported that groups of Chinese hackers tried to set up fake accounts on Facebook in order to get in contact with Uyghurs overseas. After gaining their trust, they send their victims malicious links disguised as Uyghur news sites or online stores, in an attempt to install spyware on their phones for surveillance.
The report on the hacking activities was published on March 24, 2021 in which Facebook did not directly link the incident to the Chinese government, but said that the activity "had the hallmarks of a well-resourced and persistent operation". The hacking groups involved, known in the cybersecurity industry as Earth Empusa and Evil Eye, have also been involved in other surveillance activities in the past.
The hackers mainly target Uyghur human rights activists, journalists, and dissidents from Xinjiang. Most of them currently live in Turkey, Kazakhstan, the United States, Syria, Australia and Canada.

Reuters: First Time Since 4th June for EU Ambassadors Agreed to Sanction China
According to a Reuters report, EU ambassadors agreed on the 17th March for applying sanction to four Chinese officials and one entity, being the first time for the EU to sanction China since 4th June 1989. The sanction list will be formally announced on 22nd March after passed by the EU Foreign Minister.
According to the report, the sanctioned Chinese officials are all related to the Uyghurs Muslims' human rights violation. Eight Hong Kong democracy activists, jailed in China last year after being captured at sea, arrived back in the city and were immediately detained on Mar 22 by Hong Kong Police.
“(Authorities) never communicated with the family about the whole arrangement so the family members are forced to come here and wait all day until now,” activist and barrister Chow Hang-tung, speaking on behalf of a concern group for the defendants, said at a press briefing outside a Hong Kong police station close to the mainland border.
Among the eight is Andy Li, arrested under a sweeping national security law Beijing imposed on the Asian financial hub in June 2020 that critics say is aimed at crushing dissent.
In Dec 2020, a Chinese court sentenced 10 of the 12 to between seven months and three years in jail. Defendants Tang Kai-yin and Quinn Moon, who were sentenced to three and two years, respectively, are still in southern Guangdong province.

Wong Chun-yin, a news anchor in Hong Kong working for the TV station TVB, resigned on March 24, 2021.
At the end of his last newscast, Wong bidded farewell to his audiences, “This is my last time to present news here. Hongkongers, take care and goodbye.”

Reflecting from his years of experience in TVB news team, Wong expressed deep disappointment in the management, which has been regarded a cause of self censorship and the station's deteriorating integrety.
“I faced absurdity every day as a reporter, which I found it torturous," Wong wtote. "Years later, I was promoted from a front-line reporter to a news anchor, which was another eye-opening experience."
"Although I was slightly away from the field, my role as a reporter has never been changed despite the different work positions. I thenrealised that there is, in fact, no cure for in-your-face absurdity.”
Wong quoted what Chris Pattern, the former governor of Hong Kong, said to the Chinese officials when he departed Hong Kong in 1997:
“Hong Kong was like a Rolls-Royce. All you had to do was to take charge of the ignition key, get in, turn on the engine. And the car would go.”
Wong lamented, “Today, the Rolls-Royce probably has become a HengChi. It is unfortunate that the same situation has happened to the TVB news team. It is sad and a lost cause.”
In closing, Wong thanked his colleagues and friends, saying that he will certainly miss the excitement in the journalist's work and the persistence in always looking for the right words to say.
Wong sighed that “the toughest question is that times has changed and it cannot be crawled back to the old days.”

As the Xinjiang cotton controversy continues to fester, many artists and celebrities including Eason Chan, Angelababy, Eddie Peng and Wang Yi Bo announced that they will terminate their endorsements with the brands involved in the incident.
The concern remains whether these actions are deemed to be in breach of the contract, and whether they will need to provide any compensation.
In China, a media outlet “Guancha News” quoted a Chinese lawyer explaining that artists can terminate their contrast without compensation by invoking the Civil Code’s “no abuse of civil rights to the detriment of national interest” provision.
The Hunan Provincial High People's Court in China also re-posted a short video on Weibo by “Legal Blogger”, saying that after the “D&G insult” incident, both parties will usually set a “misdeed clause” , where one party can unilaterally terminate the contract if the other party has made any “political mistakes”.
