Pharma groups spend billions to tap into booming China healthcare

Pharmaceutical groups signed partnerships with Chinese biotechnology start-ups at a record rate last year despite geopolitical tensions and concerns over intellectual property rights and data security in the country.

China has opened up its healthcare industry over the past five years, prompting US and European companies to seal deals with local companies to access the world’s second-biggest drug market.

China’s healthcare industry overtook Japan in 2016 to become the world’s second-biggest and is expected to surpass the US within three years. Pharmaceutical spending in China totalled $137bn in 2018 and will reach $140bn-$170bn by 2023, according to data provider IQVIA.

US national security experts are also worried about Beijing gaining access to American healthcare data, particularly genomic information, for both privacy reasons and concerns about the ability to use such data to help develop biological weapons.

Canadians support harder line against China over treatment of Uyghurs

A strong majority of Canadians both approve of Parliament’s declaration that China is carrying out genocide against its Uyghur Muslim minority and favour a harder line toward the country, including economic sanctions and moving the 2022 Winter Olympics out of Beijing.

A poll by Nanos Research showed that 83 per cent of Canadians either support or somewhat support the unanimous vote by the House of Commons, declaring Chinese atrocities against Uyghurs and Turkic minorities in Xinjiang to be in contravention of the United Nations’ Genocide Convention.

“It’s pretty clear that Canadians see this as genocide and the polls suggest that they are ready for action and a hardline when it comes to responding to the government of China” Mr. Nanos said.

International Rallies Around the Globe, Supporting the 47 Detained Pro-Democracy Activists

The 47 pro-democracy activists who participated in or organized the primary election were arrested under the national security law. Hong Kong citizens from all around the world held rallies at multiple locations to support the detained activists. These include San Francisco, USA, Melbourne, Australia, Berlin, Germany, Tainan, Taiwan, Nottingham, UK and Vancouver, Canada.

Rally Attendees waved flags with the slogan “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times”. Some played “Glory to Hong Kong“, in which the crowd sang along to the song, hoping to support those in Hong Kong not to give up.

Although the rallies were scattered around the world, all participants and organizers expressed a similar message:

“Use the light you have, to shine others along your way.” (Tainan)

“We want to make a difference and speak out against mass arrests.” (San Francisco Bay Area)

A message to Hongkongers that “Keep speaking out, continue making yourself heard and do not be censored.” (Nottingham, United Kingdom)

Although the military roiled a deadly crackdown on February 28 which killed 20 people and arrested over 1,200 civilians, more protesters took to the street on March 1 and March 2 to rally against the military rule.

As the military’s crackdown became increasingly violent and deadly, determined pro-democracy protesters put their names, blood type and contact details on their arms before part-taking in a rally. In the face of tear gas and gunfire, young protesters relied barely on debris, iron bars, wet towels, and plastic water bags for protection and defence.

Very few protesters were wearing proper gas masks. Construction site helmets were not able to protect them from live ammunition.

Funerals were seen in multiple places around the nation. Saddened citizens gathered to pay respect to the victims of military brutality at these funerals. They were gathered at the funerals to mourn them at places where the protester was shot and died.

The courage of young protesters and the violence of military oppression in Myanmar have recalled memories of the civil disobedience movement in Hong Kong in 2019.

A columnist of Stand News picked the news up and wrote on the paper with a hearty closing remark, “The animals in Animal Farm surrendered. But the people in Hong Kong, Thailand and Myanmar did not.

Exiled activists launch pro-democracy magazine to keep alive the spirit of “#BeWater

Exiled activists launch pro-democracy magazine to keep alive the spirit of “#BeWater

The first issue came out in January this year. Called ‘Flow HK’ in English, the magazine's editor-in-chief is exiled activist #SunnyCheung, and its editorial board includes other well-known campaigners in the #AntiELAB movement.

The Chinese name of the new quarterly magazine, "be water", is named after the tactic protesters used to evade suppression by police. The phrase originated in a maxim from Hong Kong's home-grown martial arts legend Bruce Lee, outlining a philosophy of being flexible or formless.

In his piece for the inaugural edition, Cheung urges Hongkongers to find ways to remain united and not to give up. He says that the resistance movement is now like a buried stream, ready to become a river. "Overseas Hong Kongers must fight, and will not give up on their dream to go home. If you are not free in Hong Kong, then what is the use of freedom?"

Stanford University terminated their only Cantonese lecturer, over 3000 people signed petition to oppose the annihilation of the language

Because of the limited budget, Stanford University in California, US, discontinued their contract with the only Cantonese lecturer in the campus. With the Cantonese programme at the university on the verge of cancellation, over 3000 people has petitioned for the programme. The University has promised to provide 2 Cantonese courses in the coming academic year, but has yet to respond to the petition for lifetime contract for the lecturer.

According to Stanford Daily, Stanford University Language Centre has discontinued their contract with Dr Sik Lee Denning last December, to “lower the budget”. Dr Denning is the founding lecturer of the “Cantonese Programme”, teaching the subject for over 20 years.

The incident raised concern in the Stanford community. Jamie Tam, assistant professor in public health at Yale University, who studied undergraduate degree in Stanford, described the Cantonese Programme as life-changing, allowing her to keep in touch with Hong Kong. “The society is facing a larger issue: people no longer view Cantonese as their mother tongue and tradition, thinking all Chinese people speak the same language.” She said.

‘Dependency’ of UK universities on China creates risks, report says

The report, led by former universities minister Jo Johnson, is the first comprehensive assessment of Sino-British research collaboration, counting the number of papers co-authored by academics in both countries. The number of academic papers co-authored by Chinese and British researchers rose from 750 per year in 2000 (1% of UK output) to 16,267 in 2019 (11% of UK output).

At least 20 subjects, including many in science and technology, collaborations with China now account for more than a fifth of high-impact research. In the highly sensitive areas of automation, telecommunications and materials science, more than 30 per cent of papers were Sino-British partnerships.

China's Communist party ran campaign to discredit BBC, thinktank finds

China’s Communist party (CCP) orchestrated an international campaign to undermine the BBC and discredit its reporting during the first two months of the year, using western social media networks. Posts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube which platforms are blocked in mainland China, were uploaded by diplomatic and state media accounts, and pro-Beijing influencers, and then amplified by troll networks.

Three main approaches were repeatedly deployed to try to undermine critical reporting from the UK’s public broadcaster.

The posts claimed that the BBC was biased and spreads disinformation, alleged that domestic audiences in the UK don’t trust its reporting, and said that its coverage of China is instigated by spy agencies or foreigners hostile to Beijing.

China has given away millions in its digital yuan trials. This is how it works

The People’s Bank of China has been developing the digital yuan, a so-called central bank digital currency (DCEP) that aims to replace some of the cash in circulation.

China has already started real-world trials for the digital currency in a number of cities including Shenzhen, Chengdu and Suzhou.

The digital yuan could increase competition in China’s mobile payments market which is dominated by Ant Group’s Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat Pay.

The digital yuan is different from Bitcoin, which is a so-called decentralized cryptocurrency. That means that it is not controlled by any central authority like a central bank, unlike the digital yuan which will be issued by the PBOC.

Frankie Fung, Privileged Youth Turned Activist: "It will be okay even if I don’t get to see the liberation of Hong Kong”

Frankie Fung Tat-chun is one of the 47 members of the pro-democracy camp who were charged with conspiracy to commit subversion. The day before they reported to the police station, Fung was interviewed by In-Media.

Fung has lived a more privileged lifestyle than many, yet he said he has no regrets about running in the primary election for the Legislative Council. “We might not be able to see the liberation of Hong Kong. And I don’t think I will need to see it, as long as I can help pave the road for those behind me. I think I will regret it more if I haven’t done it.”

He wanted to thank his mother the most, “I’m sorry I have let you down.” Fung teared up as he thanks his family for their unconditional support even though they are not too happy with what he is doing. “I know I am selfish and I really am a bad son, but I am still so grateful for my mom.”
