Truth & Justice will Prevail - Hongkongers vow to seek truth in young pro-democracy student's death

#ChanYinLam, a 15-year-old student in Hong Kong, was found dead on 22 September 2019 off the coast from Tseung Kwan O. Given that her body was found naked, and she was an agile swimmer and diver according to various news reports, her death triggered a lot of speculation, pointing at possible police brutality.

A year and 5 months later, on February 22, 2021, pro-democracy supporters continued their monthly ritual of paying tribute to Chan and other victims of police brutality during the anti-ELAB movement.

Over ten lightboxes were lit in the school campus of Hong Kong Design Institute where Chan was last seen, with candle lights, paper cranes and white flowers.

Chan’s supporters called on Hongkongers to fight on and never cease seeking the truth of Chan’s death.

Hundreds of #CivilServants in Hong Kong reportedly refuse signing the allegiance declaration and expecting to resign from Social Welfare Department

The Civil Service Bureau issued a letter to all departments in the middle of January 2021, demanding all civil servants to sign a declaration of allegiance within 4 weeks. They have until the end of February to return the declaration, those who refuse to sign may be asked to quit.

The Social Welfare Department currently has more than 6,000 staff members, a current staff revealed that more than 100 people, including social workers and administrative staff, are rumored to be resigning from the department.

Kim, a staff who did not want to disclose their job title or name, mentioned to Stand News reporters, saying that he is still torn between whether to sign the declaration or not. The staff said that there is a lot to consider, for example, whether or not there are consequences to signing or whether he would be held accountable if he refuses.

He said he would have to cross a psychological hurdle to leave such a secure job in the current economic environment.

He also described it as a choice between "bread or dignity" "It is written on paper that we have to be loyal to the SAR and to the Basic Law. However, everything that has happened in the past year or two is still fresh in my mind. I still vividly remember those who went on the streets to protest against the power and how the government has treated them, signing the declaration makes me feel like I am surrendering to the regime."

"Should I remain at my job so that I can play my role and fulfill my responsibilities from the inside? or is this the moment when should I stand up for what I believe is right? I will have to make a decision."

He also said that not only civil servants but everyone under the National Security Law are either those who cannot speak freely or are faced with a difficult decision. He said, "In this era, I believe that people with a conscience will need to make a choice on when is the right time to take action to declare their stance."

UK Revokes a China's Media CGTN Broadcasting license and Beijing Rebuts BBC as "Fake News”

China Global Television Network (CGTN), a subsidiary of China’s state-owned China Central Television, has been repeatedly questioned as biased. The Office of Communications (Ofcom) in the UK announced to revoke the local broadcasting license of CGTN today. On the other hand, the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry criticized a BBC report from last month as fake news linking politics to the pandemic and asked for apologies.

Ofcom confirmed on Thursday after the investigation that Star China Media owned the broadcasting license of CGTN. However, this company has no right to control the editorial content of this station. Therefore, it does not meet the legal requirements for the license.

CGTN once requested to transfer the broadcasting license to a company called China Global Television Network Corporation. However, as the “important information” for the application is missing and the company are ultimately controlled by CCP, Ofcom refused the request for license transfer. Ofcom emphasized that they have already given enough chance to CGTN, but they still failed to comply with the law, so they decided to revoke its license.

#AgnesChow: Trying Hard to Adapt to Life in Prison

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow, a former member of #Demosisto, was arrested and imprisoned for 10 months on charges of inciting, organizing and partaking illegal assembly.

A friend of her visited Chow during the Lunar New Year and wrote on her Facebook afterwards. She said Chow’s life in prison was mostly about reading, listening to the radio and looking forward to receiving letters.

She said Chow has just finished reading #NorwegianWood and wanted to carry on reading books by Japanese authors #HarukiMurakami and #KeigoHigashino.

Chow told her friend to send gratitude to her supporters, saying that she is working hard to adapt to prison life.

"During the time in prison, my mental and health conditions have not been well. I hope I can take a break and regain my health once being discharged in June," said Chow.

A Nominee of US Commerce Secretary Said: Huawei is Not Credible and has No Reason to Lift the Sanction

US Secretary of Commerce Designate Gina Raimondo made her first clear statement to Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei. She indicated that there is no reason to move out Huawei from the sanction list of US and cancelled the sanctions. She also described Huawei as “untrusted”, threatening national security in the US. Therefore, the US will cooperate with other allies to exclude untrustworthy Chinese companies from the construction of telecommunication networks.

When Raimondo attended the congressional nomination confirmation hearing last Tuesday, she did not state whether to continue to block Huawei. She made a written supplement to Congress this Thursday, indicating that she could not see any reason to remove Huawei from sanction list. “Regarding Huawei, let me make it clear: it is a security threat for the US and our allies if we use untrustworthy suppliers to produce telecommunication equipment.”

Myanmar protesters accuse China of backing coup plotters

Activists allege Beijing setting up ‘great firewall’ and call for boycott of Chinese products.

Since a week ago, Myanmar social media has been alight with rumours after a series of cargo flights confirmed by flight tracker websites from the Chinese city of Kunming landed in Yangon when the country’s airspace was restricted.

Protesters have speculated that the flights contained internet-blocking information technology software, or Chinese soldiers.

Anti-coup demonstrators have massed outside the Chinese embassy in Yangon over the past week, holding placards attacking Beijing or showing President Xi Jinping dangling senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the junta chief, by marionette strings.

U.K. Points to Political Risk in New Hong Kong Business Guidance

The U.K. highlighted increasing political risks in its latest guidance on conducting business in Hong Kong, pointedly dropping references to relations with its former colony as “positive” and “beneficial.”

The U.K. government updated its guidance Tuesday for the business risk level in Hong Kong to include a warning that a China-drafted national security law imposed last year was “already reducing the extent to which the people of Hong Kong are able to exercise their fundamental rights and freedoms.” The guidance also lays out recent political changes in Hong Kong, citing “increasing concerns” about
