Protest Scenes in Myanmar Recall the Fight for Freedom in Hong Kong and Thailand

On Feb 10, 2021, Myanmar civilians protested against the military junta on the fifth consecutive day. In the face of violent suppression by the police, protesters wittingly responded with a sense of humour.

Some protesters dressed up as Harry Potter, drag queens, brides and in different cosplay costumes. Creative protest slogans were also sighted: "I always hate you General," "I should be at home watching BL series, but I'm here for this shit," and "Don't fuck my country, fuck my ex" (sic.).

Meanwhile, medical workers have been on strike for one week. All walks of life, from civil servants, fire fighters, farmers, monks and engineers to bankers have joined the protests. According to the local media, at least 20 uniform police took part in a protest in Loikaw. The military junta, however, denied the claim in a statement, claiming those were civilians.

After the police had shot live rounds at the crowd on Feb 9, the protesters geared up with yellow helmets and eye goggles the next day, reminiscent of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and Thailand from the past two years.

Hong Kong Authorities Charge Pro-democracy Radio Host for
"Acting with a Seditious Intention"

#Giggs, a radio host in Hong Kong, was charged with four counts of "acting with a seditious intention" for an online programme he hosted between August and October 2020.

Despite the fact that the alleged offences fall outside the #NationalSecurityLaw, the case was handled by the national security office in Hong Kong.

National Security Judge and chief magistrate #VictorSo said the court didn't have sufficient grounds to believe that Giggs, will not re-offend if granted bail.

The authorities accused Giggs of intending to "bring hatred or contempt against" the Chinese and the Hong Kong SAR governments and inciting Hong Kong people to "revolt like the Ukrainian" which forced their "Chief Executive to self-exile". The vocal radio host was also criticized for showing support for the primary election of the pro-democracy game and "encouraging citizens to attend illegal assembly".

The authorities also condemned Giggs for regarding Hong Kong and Mongolia as independent entities, distorting the national flag and the Chinese authorities in his comments.

The case was adjourned to May 10, 2020 awaiting further police investigation.

180 International Human Rights Organisations Sign Open Letter Calling on Countries to Boycott 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

The Beijing Winter Olympics are scheduled to begin in February next year. An international coalition of 180 human rights organisations from around the world issued an open letter on Wednesday (Feb. 3) calling on leaders to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics and pay attention to the human rights situation in China.

The coalition of 180 human rights organisations, includes the World Uyghur Congress and the International Tibet Network. In an open letter, they said that since Beijing was awarded the Games in 2015, " "the situation has deteriorated drastically as President Xi Jinping has unleashed an unrelenting crackdown on basic freedom and human rights". They also accused the IOC of refusing to take action on Beijing's human rights situation and called on leaders to boycott the Beijing Winter Games and not encourage China's reckless exploitation of human rights and dissidents' suppression.

The open letter also addressed the situation in Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia, including the arrest of many pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong and the political persecution of Tibetans and Uyghurs.

Beijing Mouthpiece Defames a 11-year-old Hong Kong Boy and Uses Fake Identity to Approach his Family

In Hong Kong, 11-year-old #JoelWong, the founder of the Tin Shui Wai Community Concern Group, was assaulted by a pro-Beijing elderly man on January 25, 2021.

Wong saw a group of elderly women and men gathering and dancing in a park in Tin Shui Wai. When he approached the group, reminding them to keep the music down, he was headbutted by one of the men who also punched Wong on his tummy.

Since Wong reported the case to the Hong Kong Police, Wong has been harassed by Ta Kung Pao, a Beijing-owned newspaper. On January 26, 2021, the CCP mouthpiece even published a so-called "interview" with Wong’s Grandmother on its frontpage, defaming the community-caring Wong as "going astray".

The Concern Group told Stand News that the reporter of Ta Kung Pao, who "interviewed" Wong's grandmother first claimed to be his teacher and social worker. When Wong's grandmother let the reporter into their apartment, he took picture of their household and other family members. It was only after that he then revealed his identity as a reporter.

The Concern Group denounced the reporter’s action, calling it “shameful” to chat with Wong's family and “betray their trust.”

US lawmakers nominate Hong Kong democracy movement for #NobelPeacePrize

Led by US Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Democratic Representative Jim McGovern, co-chairs of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China that assesses human rights, the U.S. Congress nominated Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling the campaigners a global inspiration as they endure a crackdown by Beijing.

In a letter to the Nobel Committee, nine lawmakers across party lines cited the estimate that more than two million took to the streets on June 16, 2019.

“This prize would honor their bravery and determination that have inspired the world,” they wrote.

“A number of [Hong Kong] democracy advocates are already in jail, some in exile, and many more awaiting trials where they are expected to be convicted and sentenced in the coming months for the sole reason of peacefully expressing their political views through speech, publication, elections, or assembly.”

The lawmakers said they expected more Hong Kong democracy activists to be convicted in the coming months “for the sole reason of peacefully expressing their political views.”

Sweeping victory for pro-HongKongers councilor to defend her seat in city council

An independent councilor in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung city kept her seat despite an attempt by supporters of a pro-Beijing party to kick her out in a recall election.

Huang Chieh, a prominent supporter of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, prevailed as city councilor in the Kaohsiung district of Fengshan after more than 65,200 people rejected the motion to unseat her, compared with the 55,300 or so who voted yes.

At least 41.5%, or 121,000 voters, out of the 291,000 eligible cast ballots in the weekend poll.

The campaign against Huang was largely seen as one of a number of retaliatory moves driven by supporters of the opposition party Kuomintang. One of the reasons for seeking to oust Huang was that she had “illegally intervened in ‘Hong Kong violence’ by arranging for donations of supplies” to back the city’s pro-democracy movement, said the Central Election Commission, Taiwan’s statutory agency managing elections.

Canadian Foreign Ministry: Hong Kong authorities deny consular access to detainees with dual nationality

On 3 February, 2021, the Canadian Foreign Ministry revealed that Hong Kong has denied consular access to detainees with dual nationals in Hong Kong.

Five diplomats say, however, that consular access to dual nationals had largely been granted by local authorities since Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule more than two decades ago. That is now changing, the diplomats said.

Canada said it received a first notification of a Canadian dual-national prisoner in Hong Kong being required to declare their nationality on Jan 18, 2021. The consulate did not identify the prisoner nor the reason they were in jail.

“We are aware of more such incidences involving dual nationals of other countries,” Canadian foreign ministry spokeswoman Christelle Chartrand said, adding Ottawa had expressed its concern towards the Hong Kong government.

Canadians who wish to receive consular services should present themselves as Canadian to authorities at all times, she said.

HK Government Imposes New Controls in Schools to Stifle Freedom, Forcing Grade School Kids to Learn #NationalSecurityLaw

On February 4, 2021, the Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung in Hong Kong announced new controls in a document, “National Security: Specific Measures for Schools”.

The document sets out actions to be taken by school administrations, and exhorted principals and teachers to play their part in safeguarding national security and keep a tight rein on any signs of a breach.

Pupils from as young as six years old must learn how to 'defend national security', while older students must know specifically what acts constitute breaches of the law.

This new set of control framework applies to most subjects, including music and biology, which have no obvious connection to national security.

Schools are advised to form a working group to take charge of planning and carrying out the bureau’s measures, the document says.

They are required to review the current situation and send a report to the bureau by August 2021 and from the 2022-23 school year, schools would be thoroughly executing administrative and teaching measures related to national security education.

The young students will have to learn about the four major offences under the national security law – secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with a foreign power. They will also be taught about the origins of the Basic Law and the One Country, Two Systems principle.

Secondary school students would be taught about specific 'crimes' under the security law; the 'opportunities and challenges' that China faces in the international arena; Hong Kong's 'constitutional duty' to enact Article 23 legislation; and that 'the national security law does not affect rights and freedoms enjoyed by the people of Hong Kong'.

Students would learn about these issues in a variety of subject classes, including Chinese, General Studies, and even seemingly unrelated subjects like music, biology and economics.

Ip Kin-yuen, former legislator and vice president of Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union, accused the government officials of implementing the new policy without consulting teachers. He opined that the new rules will instill a sense of fear on campus, because it is difficult to define what can be taught and what cannot.
