Over One Year Since the Outbreak of Coronavirus: Government's Refusal To Seal Off Border with China Vs District Lockdown

Hong Kong recorded its first "highly suspected" case of coronavirus on Jan 22, 2020. It was a Chinese man who had travelled to Wuhan, China before coming to Hong Kong via the high speed train. Despite the demand of the local population, the Hong Kong government refused to close the border with China.

One year later, the coronavirus pandemic has spread across the globe. In Hong Kong, the government even imposed a compulsory lockdown in Jordan on Jan 23, 2021.

Police officers were stationed everywhere while blue tents were set up in the "restricted area" to enforce the testing of all civilians including who had been tested recently. Some civilians who tried to go to work were sighted taken to the police vehicles.

Civilians in Lockdown Area to Brace Themselves for At Least 48 Hours

During the compulsory lockdown of the Jordan area since 4am on Jan 23, 2021, the Hong Kong government claimed that food supply will be provided to the affected civilians.

The photos reveal the food supplied by the authorities, which constitute largely cup noodle, instant noodle, bread and canned food.

Whereas the residents complained about the confusion caused by the authorities, the latter insisted that the civilians were not obstructed.

International Policing Expert: HK Police Commissioner Refused Advice, Complaints Council Excludes Protester Interviews from Report

British policing expert Professor #CliffordStott, who withdrew from the panel of international experts reviewing Hong Kong police conduct during the 2019 Anti-ELAB protests, had since published his own investigative report.

During a video conference on Jan 16, 2021 with Hong Kong Democratic Party's International Affairs committee, Stott recalled the panel's meeting with Hong Kong police commissioner #ChrisTang. He noted that Tang was indifferent to the reason why citizens were protesting, and refused to listen to the council's suggestions.

Stott also mentioned that when he was in Hong Kong as a member of the Independent Police Complaints Council (#IPCC), he interviewed protesters and the lawyers who assisted them. However, the council was unwilling to include these interviews in its findings; this was illustrative of the biased nature of the report.

The panel of international experts was dismayed that the IPCC lacked the power to investigate the police force, and had planned to hold a press conference before leaving the city in order to voice their concerns. However, certain unnamed persons criticized their press release, even demanding them to not publish their views.

Commissioner Tang Hogged the Mic with a 45-Minute Speech

Clifford Stott is the Dean of research at the social psychology department of Britain's Keele University, and his research specializes in the issues and policies of policing unrest and public order. He emphasized the necessity of understanding the underlying reasons behind any riots or public unrest.

Taking an example from Hong Kong's 2019 Anti-ELAB protests, he noted that the nature of the movement has changed since protesters broke into the Legislature on July 1, 2019. The peaceful marches since then often ended in clashes, and violent fighting had become more common. He believes that the police must understand why protesters are taking to the streets before they could solve the problem at its root. Furthermore, they must step out of their preconceptions as authority figures before they can accurately analyze the protesters' actions, and arrive at conclusions that reflect reality.

However, when Stott and the IPCC met with the Commissioner of Police Chris Tang, Tang first lectured them for 45 minutes.

The professor was not impressed at Tang's unwillingness to interact with the IPCC, commenting that "it is not really a discussion".

"No Desire" to Reconcile with the Public

During break time, Stott approached Tang to raise his concerns, urging the police to face the cause of the protests and understand what citizens were demanding. His advice fell on deaf ears, however. Stott said that the police made it obvious that they did not welcome advice, had completely rejected their suggestions, and had "no desire to step back into the relationship" with the public.

As for the IPCC report, Stott criticized that it only made moral judgments on the conduct of protesters, but did not analyze the root cause of the movement, nor did it give the same attention to the conduct of the police. It also left out his interviews of protesters and their lawyers. Such a report, Stott concluded, could only give a partial and biased representation of the reality of the Hong Kong protests.

#BrickArches Designed by Hong Kong Protestors Win People's Choice in #BeasleyDesignoftheYear

Made from ordinary bricks and designed by Hong Kong protestors, the Brick Arches were nominated in the "transport" category in the Beasley Design of the Year.

Small but powerful structures, the Brick Arches were used by Hong Kong protestors from the pro-democracy movement as roadblocks to slow down police vehicles. Much more difficult to clear than ordinary roadblocks, these locally called ā€˜mini-Stonehengesā€™ or ā€˜brick battlegroundsā€™ became widespread in the pro-democracy protests in November 2019.

China announced sanctions against Pompeo and 28 others, denouncing serious violations of China's sovereignty and banning entry to China, Hong Kong and Macau.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China issued a press released during the U.S. president inauguration, announcing sanctions against 28 persons, including Mike Pompeo, the Former United States Secretary of State, criticizing them for "seriously violated China's sovereignty" and "offended the Chinese people". The 28 individuals and their families will be prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Just half an hour after U.S. president Joe Biden was sworn in and the inauguration ceremony was still in progress, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China issued a press release announcing decision to impose sanction. "Over the past few years, some anti-China politicians in the United States, out of their selfish political interests and prejudice and hatred against China and showing no regard for the interests of the Chinese and American people, have planned, promoted and executed a series of crazy moves which have gravely interfered in China's internal affairs, undermined China's interests, offended the Chinese people, and seriously disrupted China-U.S. relations.", the Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced.

Europe has handed China a strategic victory

Europe has handed China a strategic victory

The EU-China deal was pushed hard by Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and concluded right at the end of her countryā€™s presidency of the EU. EU has signalled that it doesnā€™t care about all that over the past year include t crushe the freedom of Hong Kong, intensify oppression in Xinjiang and kill Indian troops

The EU says that this deal will ā€œdiscipline the behaviourā€ of Chinaā€™s state-owned enterprises, which will now be required ā€œto act in accordance with commercial considerationsā€.

It is naive to believe that China will respect the agreement it has signed

Over the past year, China has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to ignore treaty commitments. Its new national security law violates an agreement with Britain that guaranteed the autonomy of Hong Kong. China has also imposed tariffs on Australian goods in violation of the China-Australia free trade agreement.

Letter: EU should heed lessons of Hong Kong in China deal

The EU thinks that the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) can bind China into better labour practices and fairer trade practices. This is an utter delusion.

In 2020, China demonstrated how they renege on its treaty-bound obligations to keep Hong Kong free for fifty years. It is disappointing to learn that the city-stateā€™s death-knell does not teach the world anything about China.

Hong Kong arrests 53 for plot to 'overthrow' govt in latest crackdown on dissent

Mass arrest of 53 democracy activists on January 6 was the biggest crackdown since the National Security Law imposed by Beijing in June 2020.

ā€œThe Chinese Communist Party has further turned the screw in Hong Kong,ā€ said Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong. ā€œLiberal democracies around the world must continue to speak out against the brutal destruction of a free society.ā€

ā€œThe mass arrest of politicians and activists in Hong Kong is a grievous attack on Hong Kongā€™s rights and freedoms as protected under the Joint Declaration,ā€ British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said, adding that China had deliberately misled the world about its security law.

After midnight on Feb 25, 2021, the Hong Kong authorities gradually unblocked the "restricted area" in the Jordan district after a compulsory lockdown announced at 4am on Feb 23.

In the evening of Jan 24, civilians tested negative were allowed to leave and re-enter the lockdown area with a wristband. Many civilians said that the food provided by the government was not only inadequate but also insensitive to their needs.

The authorities tested over 7,000 people and found 13 coronavirus cases, giving a positive rate of 0.17%.
