China’s Attacks on Australian Goods Take Many Different Forms

After a year of steadily worsening relations between Beijing and Canberra, China has imposed a raft of trade measures blocking billions of dollars’ worth of Australian commodities.

The restrictions targeting shipments of beef, barley, coal, lobster, wine and timber have taken on many forms. Some measures are precise, such as anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on barley, allowing Australia to escalate the matter to the World Trade Organization. Others, ranging from verbal notices to bans on individual companies, are less clear-cut.

#US National Security Advisor calls the #MassArrest of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong another nail on the coffin of Hong Kong democracy

US National Security Advisor Robert C. O’Brien wrote in his statement on Monday, January 11, 2021, that as early as May 2020, the Trump Administration foresaw and declared the death of Hong Kong’s free and open society at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP).

He elaborated further saying that “Just as China ignored its international obligations under the Sino-British Joint Declaration, it continues to do so with the International Health Regulations.”

Calling it a “politicized arrest”, O’Brien opined that the #MassArrest on January 6 of more than 50 people for exercising their political rights guaranteed under the Basic Law, is the latest of many successive nails that Beijing has driven into the coffin of Hong Kong democracy.

He called for the world to stop paying “heavy prices for its naiveté and complicity in Beijing’s irresponsible and harmful practices”.

O’Brien closed his statement by saying that the US is examining further options to respond.

Hong Kong Research Institute Demands Police to Return Data: Police are “Scarier than thieves”

During the mass arrest of 55 pro-democracy activists for their involvement in the primary election, the Hong Kong police also took away computers and servers from the office of Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#PORI) located in Wan Chai and Wong Chuk Hang.

The PORI provided technical support during the primary election in July 2019. The president of PORI, Dr. Robert Chung Yiu Ting, said their lawyer issued a letter to the Secretary for Justice, demanding the police to respect academic freedom and researchers’ dignity and return data that is unrelated to the case.

Chung said, the data that was taken away by the police has nothing to do with the primary election. One of the items taken away was a large scale database which stored a large amount of data set that would be crucial for long term data analysis.

Chung anticipated that “the police would probably say they do not know which data is related and which is not related to the election”, and therefore asked the police to return a copy of the data so that they can maintain their research at the Institute; otherwise it would be hard for one to not think that the police are being “malicious”.

Chung also said he was aware of the citizens’ concerns towards the safety of the data storage. Although the PORI has already enhanced its security system to prevent any hacking, they still cannot prevent the data from being collected by someone with public authority.

“You can prevent thieves by closing all windows, but you still cannot stop the police from entering your house”. Dr. Kenneth Chan Ka Lok, in political science at the Baptist University, described the police as “scarier than thieves”.

#Judiciary Annual Report 2020 reveals 91% of complaint cases concerning 1 pro-establishment judge's biased verdict

On January 11, 2021, the Hong Kong Judiciary released its Annual Report 2020, in which it acknowledged a significant increase in the number of complaints against judges and members of the judiciary during the year of report.

As at 30 September 2020, there were 4,700 complaints, the highest number since 2002. The upsurge stemmed mainly from one case (4,286 complaints) which accounted for 91% of all complaints.

The annual report stated that the complaint case involved a District Court judge and his verdict on one pro-ELAB protest incident was considered biased. It also stated that the Chief Justice has reviewed this case and conceded that the District Judge's comment could have compromised the public's confidence in the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. The concerning judge was then being excluded from handling cases involving a similar political context.

It was suspected that the mentioned case concerned #KwokWaiKin’s verdict on Taipo #LennonWall attack last April. In Kowk’s verdict, he described the defendant was himself a "victim" of the anti-government unrest and he praised him for turning himself in as “showing noble qualities”.

Trump Signed an Executive Order to ban 8 Mobile Apps Transactions, Including Alipay and Wechat Pay

Donald Trump signed an executive order on 5 Jan local time banning transactions of 8 Chinese-related mobile apps, including Alipay and Wechat pay. The ban will take effect in 45 days.

The Trump government has not yet announced the contents of the order. However, Steve Herman, a reporter of the Voice of America who stationed in the White House, posted on Twitter that the prohibited transaction mobile apps include Alipay, Wechat pay, CamScanner, QQ wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate and WPS Office.

Donald Trump pointed out that the apps may be able to obtain personal and sensitive information of users via mobile devices, tablets and computers. The collected data may have a chance for the Chinese government to “track the position of Federal Government staff and contract staff and set up personal message files”. According to The Wall Street Journal, the order instructs the Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross to assess whether other software constitutes threats to the US national security. The order also requests the Secretary of Commerce, the Head of Justice Department and the Director of National Intelligence to publish suggestions to prevent US user data being transferred to the hands of the overseas opponents.

British media: China deletes 300 studies from Wuhan Institute of Virology, including all research By “bat expert” Shi Zhengli

British media The Mail on Sunday found that many important materials related to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China published by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) are no longer available online, and are suspected to have been removed by the authority, causing a new round of controversy over suspected concealment of the epidemic by the Chinese government.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology is suspected to be the source of the virus, and hundreds of pages of information have been deleted, including the research conducted by the Wuhan Institute of Virology and research data of Shi Zhengli, director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases. The 56-year-old Shi Zhengli, known as “batwoman”, who often collecting samples for research from bat caves, is regarded as a key figure who knows the source of the virus. The report pointed out that more than 300 studies published by NSFC, including those on animal-to-human diseases, were no longer available. Dozens of studies that were available online were deleted by the state-run institution, including research by Shi Zhengli.

According to the report, studies related to the risk of spreading the SARS-like coronavirus from bats and investigation into human pathogens carried by bats have disappeared, both of which are regards as importing clues to the source of the virus. It revealed China's attempted to hinder the investigation into the source of the virus. Iain Duncan Smith, a Former Leader of the British Conservative Party and member of Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, pointed out that China is trying to hide the evidences, “It is vital that there is a thorough investigation into what happened but China seems to be doing all it can to stop that happening,” he said.

I left Hong Kong for London so I could tell Britain the truth about China: #NathanLaw

Due to the implementation of the national security law, Nathan Law, who is the first lawmaker and the youngest elected in history in Hong Kong to exile, decided to flee. The departure of a prominent activist signalled that something very wrong had happened in the city. My story was broadcast globally, raising awareness about Hong Kong’s plight.

But people wonder: why London, not New York, not Washington DC?

When the US moved towards “decoupling” in 2018, the CCP’s attention switched rapidly to the EU. The US has adopted an assertive approach to China and positioning it as one of the country’s greatest enemies. This is not the case in the UK and EU; that consensus needs to be built.

This is the reason why I boarded a plane destined for London and stayed here to be a political refugee.

Germany's UN envoy Christoph Heusgen during his last scheduled UN Security Council meeting, appealed to China to free two detained Canadians for Christmas

"Let me end my tenure on the Security Council by appealing to my Chinese colleagues to ask Beijing for the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Christmas is the right moment for such a gesture," Heusgen, who plans to retire after more than 40 years as a diplomat, said.

China's deputy UN envoy to respond promptly, "out of the bottom of my heart: Good riddance."

Beijing Loyalists Attack University Management,
Vice-President of
#CUHK: Students to be Penalized for Involving in Anti-ELAB Movement

On January 19, 2021, the Panel on Education of the Legislative Council (#LegCo) discussed topics on governance and security concerning recent incidents on university campuses.

Eric Ng, Vice President of Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), expressed that disciplinary action had been taken against less than 10 students of the university for their involvement in social movement, breaches of school rules, violence and bullying. He added that disciplinary actions against those students being arrested would continue after legal proceedings.

Responding to legislator’s comment that the CUHK has earned its nickname “Riot University” after anti-ELAB movement, Ng expressed disappointment and rage to that stigmatization. He explained that there had been challenges faced by the university, such as confining public entrance, as the campus is required to open to the public according to the land lease.

Another pro-Beijing legislator, Ann Chiang Lai-wan, slammed the university, calling it “a hotbed of [the concept of] Hong Kong Independence”, which “destroyed” students' life - sending them to prison and runining their future. She carried on condemning the university for spoiling students, pointing out that “teachers should be strict in teaching”.
