HSBC in Hong Kong Reportedly 'Embezzles' the Asset Owned by Exiled Lawmaker and his Family
On Jan 2, 2021, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (#HSBC) has cancelled all the credit cards under the name of Ted Hui and his family, claiming it a "commercial decision". On the onr hand, the bank charged the outstanding balance on the credit cards from their account; on the other hand, the bank claimed that it "may not be possible" to return any remaining balance, which amounts to around a few tens of thousands of Hong Kong dollars, to the account holders.
According to Ted Hui, the bank asked him to "call them later and see what the bank can do about it." Hui comdemned this as the bank's unlawful embezzlement of private property which is supposed to be protected by Hong Kong’s Basic Law.
Ted Hui, a former lawmaker who is currently in exile, points out that the incident is a result of "HSBC’s own political consideration, with a view to aiding the regime to crack down on opposition voices. This deed has no legal basis at all."
It "reflects the business community’s attachment and obedience to the regime under the National Security Law, which can completely override law and policies, and the regulators can only be 'politically correct' and helpless."
Hui also stated that Hong Kong officials and their families under international sanction actually can keep their bank accounts as well as credit cards

NBA's Morey is defiant in his support to Hong Kong democracy
In October 2019, NBA team Houston Rockets Director #DarylMorey posted a “#StandwithHongKong” photo on Twitter to show his ardent support for Hong Kong democracy.
Not only did his belief in freedom of speech triggered a storm of intense political dispute, it also almost jeopardized his career in #NBA.
In an interview with Apple Daily published on Dec 23, 2020, Morey expressed that he came to understand Hong Kong’s predicament from his EMBA classmates. He decided to show his support to Hong Kong on Twitter.
When being asked whether he regrets his action, Morey paused for a few seconds and responded, “I am comfortable with what I have done.”
Although Morey didn’t regret showing his support to pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, he was concerned about the safety of his wife and his children. “I have been dreadfully worried. I was lucky to have many people offering me assistance to handle this incident. If possible, you won’t want to antagonize the world’s second strongest country … .” Morey said.

Nearly 60% of Hong Kong people were unhappy in the past year: public opinion survey reveals
Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) released the latest survey finding on popularities of the Chief Executive and her Administration on December 29, 2020.
At an individual level, 59% of the respondents said they were unhappy in 2020, 1 percentage point higher than the year before (58%). Only 13% said they were happy in 2020, 6 percentage points lower than the year before (20%). The net happiness value in the year past stood at negative 45 percentage points, again hitting a new low since the survey series began in 1992.
#RobertChung Ting-yiu, Chairman and CEO of HKPORI described the sharp fall in Hong Kong people’s happiness rating as “cliff-breaking”. The rating in net happiness among Hong Kong people declined from 40% in 2018 to negative 38% in 2019. Chung explained that this is related to the changing political and economic environment in Hong Kong, as well as the pandemic hit. He opined that people with different political backgrounds and stance were all unhappy, otherwise, the rating won’t be declining so rapidly.
Besides, the survey showed that the popularity rating of Chief Executive Carrie Lam stood at 29.7 points. Her approval rate is 18%, disapproval rate 69%, giving a net popularity of negative 51 percentage points. As many as 44% of the survey respondents gave 0 score to the CE’s overall rating.
Regarding the HKSAR Government, the latest satisfaction rate was 17%, whereas 60% were dissatisfied, thus net satisfaction stood at negative 43 percentage points. The mean score is 2.1, meaning close to “quite dissatisfied” in general.
The survey showed several negative ratings on government performance. Robert Chung criticized that the ratings showed that the city’s government has been going against public opinion in many of its policies.

HK Government Bans Name "Wuhan Pneumonia" in Press Conference Q&As
Since mid-December 2020, sources claimed that Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam had banned journalists from using the term "Wuhan Pneumonia" during the Q&A sections of their press conferences, stating that those who refuse to comply may be expelled from the venue.
On 18 December's Department of Health press conference, a journalist from Apple Daily whether a deceased "died from a fall or from the Wuhan Pneumonia". They were soon "reminded" by an information officer, stating that the reporter could refer to the virus as the "Coronavirus".
A reporter from Stand News then asked the information officer for reasoning of their "recommendation", to which the information officer insisted that the issue be discussed at a later date, as it was not relevant to the pandemic.
Editor's Note: While the name "COVID-19" is globally recognised as the name of the disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, in Taiwan and among pro-democracy Hongkongers, the disease is often referred to as the "Wuhan Pneumonia" to highlight and remind people of the origin of the disease, and to remind others to not relieve the PRC of their responsibility for not containing the outbreak of the virus in late December 2019 to early January 2020.

Australian Minister Urges People to buy local,
McDonald’s and Domino’s Use of Local Ingredients against China’s Trade War
As the Australia-China trade dispute is getting worse, an Australian minister said that the public could help local farmers by buying local ingredients and praised fast-food chains, such as McDonald’s and Domino’s Pizza, for displaying country of origin information on their websites and food packages. It allows consumers to understand how many ingredients are from Australia so that the public could support local products.
Australian Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said to the audience in a radio interview, “You have the power. We’ve given it to you.” He praised that displaying country of origin information could help customers purchase food made from local ingredients. “McDonald’s and Domino’s have joined the campaign. Once you enter the shop, they will disclose how much of their food are actually from Australia.”
Australia and China have started a trade war, in which China has imposed restrictions on Australian exports like beef, sugar, wine and barley. The trade war has hit Australian agricultural industries.

The Female President in Exile Promised to Resign in 6 months After Taking Office: Return the Power to Citizens
Although the influence of international society becomes more powerful, and even many countries publicly recognized Tikhanovskaya as the only legal leader of Belarus, she insisted that she was the “leader of democratic Belarus” instead of “the leader of the opposition” or the “president”. She indicated that “the people of Belarus authorized me to speak for our country”. Before the election, she had indicated that she was not a politician. Once she became a president, she would resign within six months and restart a fair and just democratic election, truly “return politics to the people”.
Although many Belarusians are now in exile due to the wanted and political suppression, Tikhanovskaya thought it is just temporary and does not worried that people will lose their identities because of long-term exiled. Separated from her husband, she emphasized that exile does not mean that she is ignoring the political issues, but is now more suitable for the “international front”, shuttling between countries to lobby leaders, and preparing for the transition government. From time to time, through the internet, she can call on the compatriots in Belarus to initiate “Three Big Strikes” and other demonstrations.
For how can ordinary people contribute? Tikhanovskaya gave some examples: to participate in foreign protests which support Belarus, to write letters to the imprisoned political prisoners, as large as to the public to influence the parliament and the government’s attitude, as small as to provide food and shelter to the new exiles. Everyone has lots of things to do, and everyone is a little water drop, but when the faith of people meets, it can be an ocean. And after this struggle, Belarusians are impossible to go back to the days of accepting totalitarian rule. Every Belarusian, no matter in the country or abroad, will fight for the return of their compatriots in exile.
