Hong Kong Young Pro-democracy Activists #JoshuaWong, #AgnesChow and #IvanLam Tell Fellow Hongkongers Not to Be Afraid Before Their Trial

Pro-democracy activists Agnes Chow Ting, Joshua Wong Chi-fung and Ivan Lam Long-yin, who were former members of the now-disbanded Demosisto, will face trial at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court on November 23, 2020.

Ivan Lam, aged 26 years old, is two years older than the 1996-born Agnes Chow and Joshua Wong.

Seven years ago, the trio were featured in the cover story of City Magazine, under the title "The Reflection of Scholarisn: Young Power: Post-1990s in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China". As the founding members of Scholarism, the trio were interviewed by the magazine for their roles as secondary school students in rejuvenating social activism in the city.

Seven years later, the trio, like their fellow Hongkongers, faced great adversities in the fight for freedom and democracy. In addition to this case regarding a protest outside the police headquarters in June 2019, Agnes Chow is facing another charge of violating the national security law.

As the three planned to plead guilty in court on November 23, 2020, immediate detention might follow.

[Editor's update on Nov 23, 2020:

Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam are immediately detained after being convicted in court on Nov 23. They told Hongkongers to fight on.

Student Politicism convener Wong Yat-Chin was born and raised in China until he moved to Hong Kong in Primary 5, yet his love and attachment to the city are undeniable.

He recalled being unfamiliar with politics when he was young, and even after he immigrated, he spent his time “gaming and playing ballgames with his peers” and “did not really have a goal in life”. Wong said that he didn’t even know what the 'yellow" (pro-democracy) and the 'blue' (pro-Beijing) camps were until last year.

On June 9, 2019, Wong participated in a rally for the first time, because he felt that the Extradition Law amendments was unjust. The real wake-up call for him was when pro-democracy protester Marco Leung fell to his death at Pacific Place on June 15, 2019.

Wong sighed in retrospect saying, “I guess some would even choose to sacrifice their lives for this movement.” He said that the incident made him even more involved in the movement.

Wong started an awareness group in his secondary school and organized strikes, devoting most of his time to the movement. Some of his teachers advised him to continue only after finishing his studies. However, Wong expressed that he “wouldn’t be able to live up to his conscience, and by that time it would be too late for both me and Hong Kong.”

Not only did his participation in the movement affect his academics, it has also affected his relationship with his family and friends. Wong does not talk to his parents often because of their different political stances. “They knew I am involved but they didn’t say much, even when I got arrested last time, all they said was “okay” and that was it.”

At the beginning of the movement, he could still get in touch with his friends in China, but as the movement continued, they gradually lost contact, some even called him “violent thug” after they knew that he had founded Student Politicism.

Wong admitted that he had felt discouraged, but with his newly founded organization, he realized that “this movement is something I have committed the most in.”

In the past, he did not want to study and only dreamed of starting a local fashion brand, but now he aims to self-study for the public exam DSE and hopes to study politics in the future.

“I believe that the day will come when all Hong Kong people will rise up and fight together in unity, ” Wong repeatedly said in his interview. When he was asked whether he is worried about the consequences, he replied “I can foresee that I might become a political prisoner, but I am willing to sacrifice my life. I have not considered leaving the city.”

“I was not born in Hong Kong, but I am willing to die for it.”

#HKU Chair Professor of Law Johannes Chan: Judicial Independence Will Be Completely Lost When Judges' Rulings are Required to be 'Patriotic' to China

The deputy director of the PRC's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Zhang Xiao-ming said on Nov 17, 2020 that 'patriotism should come before democracy and freedom', he then called for judicial reform in Hong Kong.

Johannes Chan Man-mun, the Chair Professor of Law at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), expressed his concern in a Commercial Radio Hong Kong's program that the requirement of 'patriotism' would be imposed on the judicial officers.

Chan then added that 'patriotism' was only a political consideration which could not be measured by the objective standards; if judges in Hong Kong were required to follow the mainland Chinese standards, then when the judges' rulings were not in line with the government's wishes or did not incriminate those accused by the Nation Security Law, they would be considered 'unpatriotic', such situation would put judicial independence in jeopardy.

The prosecution has required the case of People Power's Tam Tak-chi, who faces 14 charges related to 'making seditious remarks and incitement to take part in an unauthorized assembly', to be handled by the designated national security judges.

Chan said that in general, since the principles of fair trial and judicial independence were involved, both sides of prosecution and defense did not have the right to appoint judges, otherwise, the trial would be considered unfair.

HK Government Suspends Local School and Welcomes HK-China Border-Crossers With Quarantine Exemption

The Health Authorities in Hong Kong announced on November 20, 2020 that face-to-face classes for primary 1-3 students will be suspended for two weeks starting on Nov 23.

With more new cases confirmed in the city, the Heath Secretary said the coronavirus situation has worsened.

Nevertheless, on the same day that primary schools will partially be suspended in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong government is opening the Hong Kong-China border and exempting the border-crossing people from the 14-day quarantine.

The government called it the "Return2HK" scheme, which will allow registered people to leave Macau and Southern China and go to Hong Kong without the need to undergo 14 days of quarantine.

The daily quota is initially set to be 5,000 people. Among them, up to 3,000 people will be allowed to enter through the Shenzhen Bay and 2,000 via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge per day.

According to pro-Beijing newspaper Sing Tao Daily, the government has plans to increase the quota, and extend the quarantine-free arrangement to other provinces in China, even before the scheme is launched.

Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam Are Immediately Detained: "Fight On"

Joshua Wong told Hongkongers to never give up the fight for freedom and "it is not a time to kowtow to Beijing". "It's even more precious to help each other up" during the low tide.

Ivan Lam said whether the protest outside the police headquarters is a crime or a righteous act, "Hongkongers have the answer in their heart". Lam said their belief never changes.

Agnes Chow expressed anxiety towards her first time in jail, but asked the public to pay attention to the pro-democracy protesters who are facing more serious charges.

The three pro-democracy activist and former members of the disbanded Demonsisto were convicted in the West Kowoon Magistrates' Court on Nov 23, 2020 and are immediately detained.

The court will announce their sentence on Dec 2, 2020.

Trudeau Hopes Biden to Keep Pressure on China for the Release of Two Canadians Citizen

Canadian Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau said on Monday that he hopes the future administration of the US President-elect Biden keep pressure on China to release the two Canadian citizens.

At the request of the United States in December 2018, Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the deputy chair of the board and chief financial officer of the telecom giant, Huawei, at the Vancouver Airport in transit. China subsequently detained a former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and a businessman Michael Spavor, who were indiced in June on suspicion of spying on state secrets and intelligence for a foreign country. Western countries widely criticize China of detaining the two men in retaliation for the arrest of Meng Wanzhou.

Granny Wong Reported Missing is Arrested by Hong Kong police

'Granny Wong' Alexandra Wong Fung-yiu, a Hong Kong pro-democracy protester known for waving the British and the British Hong Kong flags in the frontline, is reported to be missing since Nov 20, 2020.

Granny Wong returned to Hong Kong only recently, after being detained by the Chinese authorities for nearly a year.

It is revealed that the Hong Kong police has just arrested Granny Wong for "common assault" on Nov 20, 2020.

Wong was ill and taken to the hospital before the hearing commenced at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court on the morning of Nov 21. The hearing is delayed to Nov 23 and Wong is remanded in custody.

Wong's arrest was not disclosed until it was found out by the reporters who have been following the court cases. As the reporters pressed further on the question, the police issued a statement at 18:48 on the evening of Nov 21, saying that a 64-year-old woman was arrested in Central District the day before on suspicion of assaulting a security guard at the High Court on January 22, 2019 and this woman is charged with "common assault".

Former lawmaker Eddie Chu Hoi-dick, who has been following Wong's situation, wrote on his Facebook page on Nov 21 that he had been searching for Wong since she was out of touch on Nov 20 for a night, it was until the next morning he knew from news report that Wong had been arrested. She was in the hospital's emergency room, and her lawyer is trying to bail her out.

Wong was arrested on her way back to her home in Shenzhen by the Chinese authorities in August 2019. She was detained in China for months and obtained the guarantor pending trial, she then returned to Hong Kong in October this year.

Canadians consider Beijing to be larger threat than Moscow, poll finds

Recent polling conducted for the Macdonald-Laurier Institute found 79 per cent of respondents believe China constitutes a serious or moderate threat to Canada. Sixty-eight per cent of those surveyed said Russia is a serious or moderate threat.

Shuvaloy Majumdar, a foreign-policy specialist at the Ottawa-based think tank, said the survey has captured a shift in Canadian attitudes. “China has replaced Russia as our principal rival," he said.

Beijing blasts Bob Rae after ambassador calls for UN to investigate genocide claims

Rae has asked the UN Human Rights Council to investigate China's treatment of the country's Uighurs in Xinjiang. Beijing has denied any wrongdoing, saying it is running a voluntary employment and language-training program.

Zhao on Monday used a number of select statistics that suggest China's Uighur population is growing at a faster rate than Canada's population to mock Rae's suggestions that the Uighurs are being persecuted.

However, Zhao's statistics appear to have been incomplete or inaccurate and did not address a report by The Associated Press in June that birthrates have been dramatically cut in Uighur-dominated areas of Xinjiang.

Feds setting up new streams for Hong Kong residents to come to Canada

The federal government is offering new immigration programs aimed at attracting young people from Hong Kong to Canada and is promising to expedite paperwork.

A new expedited three-year open work permit will be offered to recent Hong Kong graduates and those with essential work experience. Eligible applicants are those who have graduated from a recognized post-secondary institution in the last five year, and their spouses and children will also eligible to seek permanent Canadian residency.

There will be also be two new streams to permanent residency for “the best and the brightest” Hong Kong residents already in Canada who have graduated with a degree in the last three years, and for those with recent degrees and a year of full-time work experience in Canada who want to come back here, once the existing Covid-19 travel restrictions are lifted.

“Big P” and “Little P”, wearing the Guy Fawkes' masks from the film Vendetta, are this year's graduates of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK).

On the Congregation Day on November 19, 2020, they went back to the campus with hundreds of graduates.

Big P brought white ribbon in memory of the casualties of pro-democracy protesters who defended the campus against the police's siege in 2019.

Little P added that the white ribbon is a symbol of commemoration not only for the Battle of CUHK, but also for the Defense War of Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU). Little P said, “No matter it is life and death, we miss them [pro-democracy protesters] all.”

Little P hopes to reiterate the original cause by participating in the demonstration on campus and that the march could ignite people’s will to fight, remind people of the valiant spirit and commemorate the Battle of CUHK.

One year after the police's siege of CUHK, Big P’s memory was still fresh. More memories and sentiments were recalled when visiting the photo exhibition organised by the CUHK Students’ Union last week.

To Big P, the most traumatic moment was when the pro-demoracy protestors were being arrested in CUHK. He reminded himself to keep up the fight and record the truth.

He also lamented, “nowadays, wearing a ribbon is considered as a resistance all because the authorities think you are going against them.”
