US calls on WHO to Invite Taiwan to Attend the World Health Assembly

Unites States Mission in Geneva urged Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the General Director of WHO, to invite Taiwan to attend the World Health Assembly next Monday.

The delegation issued a statement saying that they encouraged WHO to work harder to provide Taiwan with more meaningful cooperation opportunities.

The World Health Assembly next Monday will discuss the global COVID-19 epidemic situations. The delegation thinks that inviting Taiwan to participate is necessary as Taiwan has not recorded a confirmed case of COVID-19 for more than 200 consecutive days, and many countries praised its anti-epidemic performance.

Hundreds of parliamentarians from Europe and Latin America have recently submitted joint signatures to the WHO, requesting Taiwan to attend the World Health Assembly and even join the WHO.

China's media coverage on US election rises sharply, in response to negative and confusing news.

In the wake of the deadlock in the US presidential election results, some Chinese official media, which used to keep a tight rein on coverage of the election process and vote count, have recently changed. The coverage has been significantly raised, but focusing on negative news such as the discrepancies between US media's vote projections, controversies over mail-in ballots and public protests. There were also notable reports on Democratic presidential candidate Biden when he overtook Trump in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

It has been reported that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has issued a directive on reports of US Presidential Election, that all news have to follow a "unified arrangement", based on "standardized manuscript" from Xinhua News Agency, with "no reprinting of foreign media without authorization, and no follow-up reports". Chinese media are also required to position themselves according to the "state spokesman's stance on the subject", and "strictly prevent anti-US seditious and incite messages such as 'boycott US'". This directive was confirmed by media workers.

Police Requires Name Registration in Protest, Government's Chief Secretary Rejects HKJA's Application Entirely

Hongkongers were once again disappointed by the Hong Kong SAR Government, after the Chief Secretary rejected a protest application filed by the Hong Kong Journalists Association (#HKJA).

This protest decrying the erosion of press freedom was planned to take place on Hong Kong island on Sunday, November 15, 2020. The organizers hope to use this protest to show discontent toward the authorities' arrest and prosecution of #RTHK producer Choy Yuk-ling (#BaoChoy).

The police originally banned the protest, but the Appeal Board ruled in favour of the HKJA on Nov 13. However, the police imposed a name registration system and limited the participants to 1,000 media workers, journalism students and faculty at higher education institutes. The police required all protesters to register their names, in addition to wearing a mask and filling out a health declaration form. The authorities will take photos to monitor participants and their compliance with social distancing measures.

If the Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung would have given a green light, the Sunday's rally would probably be the first protest since a very long time in Hong Kong. In any case, the police's request of a 'black-and-white' name registration has revealed their intent to create new 'rules' to tighten control.

After the Appeal Board announced the decision on the afternoon of Nov 13, HKJA vice-chairman Ronson Chan said he was hopeful towards a positive response from Cheung, as he doesn't think the Chief Secretary would "evade his responsibility".

However, after midnight on November 14, the HKJA released an update that the Chief Secretary has rejected their protest application.

The Hong Kong SAR government has banned protests and rallies for months, including the annual June 4 Tiananmen massacre vigil in Victoria Park and the annual July 1 rally organised by the Civic Human Rights Front, citing the coronavirus pandemic as a reason.

Hong Kong Students Organize Exhibition to Commemorate #CUHKSiege; Authorities: University has the Right to Refuse Visits

At the one-year mark of the police siege of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), the Students' Union (#CUSU) organizes events including photo exhibition to commemorate the pro-democracy Hongkongers' defense of the campus.

The university's security office, however, placed a notice at the campus' entrance, stating 'Depending on overall risk assessment and pandemic control, the university has the right to decline entry of non-CUHK identity holders or individual visitors into the campus."

Jacky So Tsun-fung, a member of the Students' Union, said the notice was placed by the university management probably in the afternoon. He believed that the university authorities saw the anniversary of the "CUHK Battle" a "sensitive period".

Earlier, the authorities censored the commemorative events:

Angry Chinese Netizens Lash Out at #KPop Group #Blackpink for Touching Panda with Bare Hands

Chinese netizens lashed out at K-pop idol group Blackpink and their fans, after the members of the group were shown touching a baby panda with bare hands in the reality show "24/365 with BLACKPINK”.

Chinese netizens claimed that Pandas are China’s national treasure, and reprimanded Blackpink members for their "poor personal hygiene" as they were not wearing gloves.

Editor's note: This is not the first time when celebrities outside China fell prey to Chinese netizens' attack. In October 2020, world-famous K-pop band #BTS was harshly condemned by Chinese people for mentioning the Korean War, as the band commemorated the sacrifice of Korean and US soldiers. #Poll: 64% Respondents Consider #HKU's Appointment of Mainland Professors as Vice-Presidents as Against Principle of Fairness

The governing council of the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) appointed two professors from mainland China, Max Shen Zuojan and Gong Peng, as vice-presidents. Shen is suspected to be a Communist Party member but the council clarified that the allegations are found to be unsubstantiated.

The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#PORI) has interviewed 5,767 Hong Kong citizens in November 2020. The survey asked the question: 'The University of Hong Kong recently appointed two scholars from Tsinghua University, Max Shen and Peng Gong, as Vice-Presidents. How much do you consider the appointment to comply with, or not comply with, the principle of fairness?'.

89% of the pro-democracy respondents said the appointment did not comply with the principle of fairness. A total of 64% of respondents, pro-democracy or otherwise, considered the appointment 'not quite comply', ' very much not comply' and 'entirely not comply' with the principle.

Dr. Chan King-ming, associate professor at the School of Life Sciences of Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and the former chairman of the Teacher's Association of CUHK, said that this appointment clearly shows the mainlandization and Sinicization of HKU.

Chan added that when he was the union chief a few years ago, a number of his colleagues at CUHK complained the use of Mandarin during meetings, 'it is now mainlandization, not globalization.'

Chan mentioned that since many mainland Chinese scholars had returned to China from the US, Hong Kong had become one of their preferred destinations. He worried that these scholars are being intentionally installed in different universities and organizations in Hong Kong. He added that HKU's appointment this time was related to the earlier change in the governance structure, such as the direct interventions occurring in the governing council and the Court. Such things had actually happened 15 years ago at the university.'

Chan also criticized that this appointment had already posed threats to academic freedom and institutional autonomy, and noted that the issue of resource allocation was involved here as a number of scholars had been invited to work in mainland China, especially the Greater Bay Area.

Regarding the National Security Law, Chan remarked that chilling effect had already been brought by the reporting hotline set up by the Police's National Security Department, and 'Cultural Revolution 2.0' had come. Some students had begun self-censoring as they changed the names of their online accounts.
