Chinese manufacturer threatened to sell fake infrared thermometers to harm the Americans but later apologised for it's “patriotic act”

(30 Mar) The quality of the Chinese made medical supplies are in great doubt. Days ago, some Chinese manufacturers claimed to manufacture fake infrared thermometers and sell them to the United States, so the Americans cannot test their temperate accurately. The manufacturer said that they did it out of “patriotism”. Researchers found that in the last few months, the Chinese government has stirred up many public opinions, and nationalism has become part of the preventive measures. Some mainland Chinese residents said that many businessmen cashed in on the pandemic and made huge amount of money during the suffering of the nation. They took advantage of the epidemic, and that many medical supplies are fake with bad qualities.

//Many countries have found quality issues in the medical supplies from China.

//Through shifting the blame or speaking about nationalism, it resolves some pressure for the authority. “

I believe the authority pushes theses nationalistic thoughts among citizens, and it actually boosted the world’s distrust and suspicion on China. The “made in China” tag, the sincerity of donating face masks, etc, all these diplomatic moves have casted doubts on China's purposes.

//there are many other medical supplies without any certifications.

Chinese doctor suggests nutritious foods for children’s breakfast instead of congee; Chinese netizens: “unpatriotic and a western worshipper”

(24 Apr) Doctor Zhang Wenhong, Director of the Department of Infections of the Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, Shanghai, suggested that children should have nutritious and high protein foods for their breakfast instead of congee to fight against COVID-19. However, he was criticized by Chinese netizens as “unpatriotic and a western worshipper”.

He explained that nutritious and high protein food, such as milk and eggs, is good for children’s immune systems. Despite being criticized by many Chinese netizens, Zhang stood firm elaborating that protein is essential for the human immune system as it helps create antibodies to fight the virus. He also added that children should also take Vitamin C supplements.

Chinese netizens reacted aggressively to Zhang’s speech, “what is the issue of having congee as breakfast? This is a traditional food for the Chinese, why are you saying it is not nutritious?”

In echo of Mao era, China's schools in book-cleansing drive

//As schools reopened in China after the COVID-19 outbreak, they have thrown themselves into a nationwide exercise to remove books deemed politically incorrect, deepening Chinese President Xi Jinping’s push to instil patriotism and ideological purity in the education system.

//A directive from the Ministry of Education last October called on elementary and middle schools to clear out books from their libraries including “illegal” and “inappropriate” works. Now teachers have removed books from schools in at least 30 of mainland China’s 33 provinces and municipalities, according to a Reuters review of social media posts, publicly available school and local government documents, and interviews with teachers.

//Censorship in China has been intensifying under Xi, but analysts say this is the first national campaign aimed at libraries in decades. It comes as government employees in Hong Kong last week removed books by pro-democracy activists from public libraries to see whether they violate a new national security law.

//The ministry directive did not list titles, but said illegal books are those “that damage the unity of the country, sovereignty or its territory; books that upset society’s order and damage societal stability; books that violate the Party’s guidelines and policies, smear or defame the Party, the country’s leaders and heroes.”

Hong Kong Anglican Church to "consolidate" schools by establishing education department, board of directors include three CPPCC members including Paul Kwong and Canon Koon, church members fear governance unification

(1 Aug)The Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (SKH) [or the Hong Kong Anglican Church] presently runs 32 secondary schools, 60 primary schools and 30 kindergartens, bringing the total to more than 120 schools altogether. They include traditional elite schools like Diocesan, Heep Yunn, St. Paul's Co-Educational College. These schools under the SKH may undergo some changes in management. Paul Kwong, the Archbishop and Primate of the Province of Hong Kong who will soon retire, stated that the SKH will establish an "education department" to consolidate the currently separate management teams of secondary and primary schools and kindergartens into one "to serve as the only voice of opinion for external communication".

//The board of directors in the upper layer will only be open to those with official posts in the church

//facilitating patriotic education would diminish diversity in Hong Kong's schools.

//the education department's role as the sole mouthpiece would make it difficult to avoid influencing the diversity of schools... it will be difficult to not enforce their values."

//the [pro-Beijing] Alliance for Peace and Democracy, which set up a whistleblowing hotline during Occupy Central in 2014. It exposed and divulged information of the students who participated in strikes to their schools.

//it was critical not to centralise.

Luo Hui-ning, The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government (LOCPG): “Patriotism is not a choice.”

(30 Sep)Tomorrow [01 October] is the National Day of China and Mid-Autumn Festival. The National Day Celebration was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today (30 September) and was attended by multiple Chinese and Hong Kong dignitaries, including Vice-Chairman of The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Tung Chee-hwa, Chief Executive Carrie Lam, Director of LOCPG Luo Hui-ning, Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) Cheng Yan-hung and others. Luo stated that Hong Kong people’s national identity must be strengthened and emphasized that there is only room for “Two Systems” if “One Country” is preserved.

Luo mentioned that the National Security Law put an end to “the turmoil of rampant independence in Hong Kong and black violence [referring to the ‘violence’ from black-clad demonstrators]”, and that national security education needs to be strengthened in the future, especially on civil servants and youngsters.

He also said that Chinese patriotism is not a choice, but an obligation and a righteousness, and called for a "firm defence" and "firm footing" on major issues of right and wrong so that Hong Kong could break through the vortex of over-politicization and free itself from violence and phoenixism [ie. mutual destruction].

Carrie Lam expressed her gratitude to the Central Government for their assistance in the fight against the epidemic. She also added that the Central Government’s support made the enactment of the National Security Law of Hong Kong which is crucial given the severe blow to the economy and society stemming from the Anti-ELAB movement and violence of last year.

#HKU Chair Professor of Law Johannes Chan: Judicial Independence Will Be Completely Lost When Judges' Rulings are Required to be 'Patriotic' to China

The deputy director of the PRC's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Zhang Xiao-ming said on Nov 17, 2020 that 'patriotism should come before democracy and freedom', he then called for judicial reform in Hong Kong.

Johannes Chan Man-mun, the Chair Professor of Law at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), expressed his concern in a Commercial Radio Hong Kong's program that the requirement of 'patriotism' would be imposed on the judicial officers.

Chan then added that 'patriotism' was only a political consideration which could not be measured by the objective standards; if judges in Hong Kong were required to follow the mainland Chinese standards, then when the judges' rulings were not in line with the government's wishes or did not incriminate those accused by the Nation Security Law, they would be considered 'unpatriotic', such situation would put judicial independence in jeopardy.

The prosecution has required the case of People Power's Tam Tak-chi, who faces 14 charges related to 'making seditious remarks and incitement to take part in an unauthorized assembly', to be handled by the designated national security judges.

Chan said that in general, since the principles of fair trial and judicial independence were involved, both sides of prosecution and defense did not have the right to appoint judges, otherwise, the trial would be considered unfair.
