First Anti-ELAB Protester Sentenced to 4 Years in Jail After Pleading Guilty to Riot Charges

On 12 June 2019, citizens surrounded the Legislative Council building in Admiralty to stop the second reading of the extradition bill from resuming. It later turned into a conflict between the police and citizens. A 22-year-old lifeguard, surnamed Sin, pled guilty to his riot charges in the district court, making him the first of the protesters to do so. Judge Amanda Jane Woodcock sentenced him to 4 years in jail.

As of May 14, police has arrested at least 8,300 citizens since the city-wide pro-democracy movement started in June 2019. Among them, 1,600 arrestees have been prosecuted. Meanwhile, many condemned the police for conducting arbitrary mass arrest and abusing the detainees. For instance, police arrested 286 citizens outside Sogo Department Store after calling off the New Year's Day March on Jan 1, 2020, but prosecuted no one so far.

23-year-old female pro-democracy student sentenced to 38 months behind bars: "This is the path I must take, a responsibility I must bear"

In Hong Kong, 23-year-old female student Yeung Wing-yu recently admitted to possessing more than 100 molotov cocktails during the Anti-Extradition Law movement in 2019. She was sentenced to three years and two months in prison on April 30, 2021.

In her hand-written petition letter to the court, she mentioned that the more she sought knowledge, the more she felt that society was full of injustice and in the end, she committed the crime in this case.

She also said, "the greatest loss to our current society, is the loss of trust". She wrote that she is filled with guilt for worrying her family during her time in custody. She also said that she would not ask the court for a lighter sentence, since it is understood that a long prison sentence was inevitable and "this is the path I must take, a responsibility I must bear".

The letter concludes with a message of encouragement to all those who walked on the same path, "There are already enough people in confinement, so please take care, protect yourself and do your best to survive! I'll be waiting to receive all your letters inside."

AppleDaily founder #JimmyLai, former legislators #CydHo and #YeungSum, and former League of Social Democrats (#LSD) chairman #AveryNg were sentenced to 14 months in jail.

Only former legislator #SinChungKai and activist #RichardTsoi received suspended jail terms.

With their existing prison terms from other cases, Jimmy Lai and Lee Cheuk-yan are currently serving 20 months in prison in total while that of Leung Kwok-hung has accumulated to 22 months at the moment.

In the courtroom, some pro-democracy supporters chanted "fight on". From the defendants' seats, Leung Kwok-hung called out "Remember June 4th [Tiananmen Massacre]", while Figo Chan shout "mourn on June 4, speak out on July 1".
