Granny Wong Weeps Recalling Detention by Chinese Authorities

'Granny Wong' Wong Fung-yiu, who is known for waving the British flag in Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, disappeared after showing up publicly in Taikoo subway station on Aug 11, 2019.

On Oct 17, 2020, Granny Wong spoke of what she experienced in the past year as she was detained by the Chinese authorities for months without being told of her charges. Wong, a Hong Kong resident, pointed out that it is unjust to have the Chinese authorities arresting people for protesting in Hong Kong.

Wong has been living in Shenzhen for 14 years. After what had happened, she said she will not go to China, as there is a large chance she "cannot make it back alive". Wong called on the public to not to forget the 12 Hongkongers detained by Chinese authorities, as she believed that they faced even more severe treatments.

Wong said she will not give up the fight for freedom and democracy.

Unhygienic Meals, Windowless Cell, Surveillance Cameras in Bathroom: Chinese Authorities Jail Granny Wong Without Any Clear Charge or Trial

Granny Wong recalled that she was admitted to the hospital in Hong Kong after the police pushed her to the ground in Taikoo subway station.on Aug 11, 2019. She was hospitalized for 2 days and was arrested when she crossed the border on Aug 14.

In China, Granny Wong was interrogated by officers from Chinese National Security Bureau and different units for her participation in Hong Kong protests. They showed her protests photos and demanded her to tell whom she went protest with.

The Chinese authorities intimidated her that she "might have committed very serious crime". They searched her flat and detained her in Futien Dentention Center under a 15-day "administrative detention".

Wong was ordered to sign a document saying the she would not appeal. Wong overheard the Chinese police interrogating another person about protests in Hong Kong, but it was uncertain that the person is a Hongkonger or a Chinese.

After the 15-day "administrative detention" ended on August 30, 2019, Wong was, however, not released but transferred to Shenzhen No.3 Detention Center for further detention.

Wong shared a windowless cell of around 100 sq. meters with 15 other inmates. The only windows are located in the bathroom, which is equipped with at least two surveillance cameras. Wong worried that the female inmates are filmed during their showers. Wong said the food served to the inmates included buns, slightly burnt congee and unhygienic, low quality meat .

During the detention, Wong still was not informed of the charges against her. She had requested relevant information including a photocopy of the official document, but was severely reprimanded by the Chinese officers.

She was "released on bail while awaiting trial" on 29 September 2019. She was told by the police station near her place that she was charged of "causing disturbances". One of the bail conditions is that she was bar from leaving Shenzhen for a year.

Thai Pro-democracy Protests Demand Reform in Monarchy

Between Oct 13 and Oct 17, 2020, Thai police arrested at least 65 pro-democracy protesters including 9 key figures. On Oct 16, Thai police deployed water cannon with chemicals at civilians.

The three-fingered salute, inspired by Hunger Games, has been a sign used by Thai pro-democracy activists. Having gestured the hand sign at a car carrying royal members including the Queen, two student activists Bunkueanun "Francis" Paothong and Ekachai Hongkangwan were arrested on Oct 16 and could face up to a life sentence. Pro-democracy civilians have been calling for reforms to the monarchy.

Despite this, the public were not deterred and called for rallies at nearby BTS or MRT stations in Bankok on Saturday Oct 17. Although the authorities suspended the public transportation services, civilians, some wearing protective gears like helmets, walked to the assembly places. 23,000 people were estimated on Sarurday's rallies. The police did not interfere and the protesters left peacefully.

Trudeau Claims No Fear of China’s “Coercive Diplomacy”, Vows to Keep Speaking Out on Situation in Hong Kong and Other Global Human Rights Issues

The Chinese ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu has warned Canada earlier not to grant political asylum to “violent criminals” from Hong Kong. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada would not stop speaking out loudly and clearly on global human rights issues, including the situation in Hong Kong and issues surrounding Uyghurs in Xinjiang. He added that he would continue criticizing China’s “coercive diplomacy.”

Just this September, Canada offered political asylum to a couple from Hong Kong and was met with objection from the Chinese government. Cong warned Canada on 15 October that it was unacceptable to offer political asylum to Hongkongers seeking protection from the Hong Kong national security law. Cong added that this move would affect the 300,000 Canadian passport holders in Hong Kong and the “health and safety” of Canadian companies in Hong Kong.

At a press conference held the following day, Trudeau responded by saying that while Canada did not want to escalate the situation, it would make it clear to its citizens that it would not stop speaking out on global human right issues and tolerate China’s “coercive diplomacy.”
