Actress Lee Yee-man and Barrister Alan Leong volunteer to run "Yellow shop": "Supporting the Yellow economic circle equals supporting Hong Kongā€™s future"

(3 May) Netizens called on Hongkongers to support shops in the Yellow economic circle during the Labour Day Golden Week. Actress Lee Yee-man - who participated in the anti-extradition protests - and Civic Party Chairman Alan Leong volunteered as "shopkeepers for a day" at the Yellow shop, Agape Garden at Cheerful Court, Ngau Tau Kok. One worked as a salesperson and the other as a cashier to sell goods made in-house.

Lee was delighted to see an endless queue and a huge turnout. She also called on Hongkongers to continue supporting the Yellow economic circle after Golden Week. "Supporting the Yellow economic circle equals supporting Hong Kongā€™s future. Whether or not we, Hongkongers, can rely on ourselves to eke out a real locally-based economic system all depends on you." Lee said she had heard a lot about Agape Garden and was very interested in their "fellow cookies and fellow egg rolls". Upon receiving the invitation to be a "shopkeeper for a day", she immediately accepted it. "I believe we must support Hongkongers and local products."

Having witnessed Hongkongers' mask shortage and their reliance on consistently scarce imports of epidemic prevention supplies, Lee believed that the experience served as a reminder to Hongkongers to produce locally and not solely rely on imports. Tourism, which is one of Hong Kong's major economic pillars, could also use more products with local characteristics to attract more tourists from around the world.

Lee: Public figures should not avoid talking about what's right

Lee has been a TVB actress for over a decade. She left this year after her contract ended. She revealed that she left in hopes of space with greater freedom to "say what I want and do what I should do". Lee believed that public figures should not avoid talking about what was right. "As a Hong Kong artist living in Hong Kong, why can't I speak out when there's a problem?" This was why she hoped to film more works that are truer to society in the future.

When he first encountered the electronic cash register, Leong - who was responsible for transactions - said he was worried about making mistakes because he was not familiar with it. The long queue also put a certain amount of pressure on him. However, he felt that being a shopkeeper was more fulfilling than just patronising Yellow shops.

Leong believed that Golden Week had multiple meanings for Hongkongers. One was to allow Hongkongers with the same values to gather and acknowledge and support one another. Secondly, it was a protest against the tyrannical regime. He was confident that Hongkongers would, in their own ways, continue supporting the Yellow economic circle after Golden Week. "The regime's immorality, injustice and perversion worsening by the day. I believe Hongkongers will protest and resist in their own way."

#RTHK terminates the contract of critically acclaimed reporter #NabelaQoser

In Hong Kong, the public broadcaster RTHK refused to renew the contract of journalist Nabela Qoser, who is known for her professionalism and critical stance.

Since 2019, the pro-Beijing camp and figures have been attacking Qoser after she raised sharp questions during government press conferences.

Although the station has earlier announced that Qoser was wrongly accused by the complaints, RTHK reopened the investigation in October 2020. Citing the ongoing probe as a reason, RTHK terminated Qoser's civil service contract in January 2021, though she was employed in 2017. The public broadcaster further switched her to a 120-day contract, before terminaring it in May 2021.

Qoser has to leave the station by the end of May 2021.

#RTHK deletes shows from internet, Bao Choy: The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting

//The news has led to concern that the bulk of RTHKā€˜s archival content ā€” which, for years, has been freely accessible on the two platforms ā€” will no longer be viewable, including episodes that reported on Hong Kongā€™s political turmoil since the 2019 protests, and the national security law....

Since the arrival the new Director of Broadcasting Patrick Li in March, who has no media background but introduced a massive editorial overhaul, ten RTHK television episodes have been censored before they were broadcast. Meanwhile, at least five top executives have resigned or took early retirement amid a staff exodus.

One episode of the documentary programme Hong Kong Connection ā€“ which investigated the July 2019 Yuen Long mob attack near an MTR station ā€“ would be among the episodes set to be removed from the internet.//

#Philippines foreign minister on #SouthChinaSea dispute

//The Philippine foreign minister on Monday demanded in an expletive-laced Twitter message that Chinaā€™s vessels get out of disputed waters, the latest exchange in a war of words with Beijing over the South China Sea.

The comments by Teodoro Locsin follow Manila's protests for what it calls the "illegal" presence of hundreds of Chinese boats inside the Philippines 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

"China, my friend, how politely can I put it? Let me seeā€¦ Oā€¦GET THE FUCK OUT," Locsin tweeted on his personal account.

"What are you doing to our friendship? You. Not us. We're trying. You. You're like an ugly oaf forcing your attentions on a handsome guy who wants to be a friend; not to father a Chinese province ...", Locsin said.//

Hong Kong Pro-democracy Activist #GwynethHo: Donā€™t let ā€œsufferingā€ retaliate the movement

The following is an excerpt of a #letter written by former journalist and currently detained activist Gwyneth Ho:

"It is human nature to be afraid of prison, but we should not think of imprisonment as a form of suffering imposed by the government to activists, where activistsā€™ freedom is being completely restricted in a passive state.

If we interpret 'suffering' as a passive state, the 'sufferers' will become the 'victims'.

We should not see the experience of suffering as failure or an end to the movement. Otherwise, it will retaliate and wear us down. I hope everyone keeps in mind that the years 2019, 2020 and 2021 go hand in hand and cannot be considered individually. To suffer or the acknowledgement of the risk of suffering has always been a part of the political movement. As long as the state of 'suffering' is not over, our movement goes on."

#Documentary about Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Protests Awarded Grand Prize in Taiwan

[Editor's note: The Hong Kong authorities had classified the two documentary films as Category III, calling it "unsuitable" for an audience below 18 years of age. The authorities also demanded a warning to be placed before the films]

Hong Kong protest-related documentaries has won awards across the world.

The award ceremony of the 12th Taiwan International Documentary Festival unveiled on May 6, 2021 in which "Taking Back the Legislature" and "Inside the Red Brick Wall" were awarded Grand Prize for the Chinese-language Documentary Category.

The Jury explained the prize was given for ā€œthe capture of passion and contradictions of the insurgency of a peopleā€.

ā€œThe Jury wishes to thank the collective communion of the group of filmmakersā€¦ for contributing to our understanding of how cinema feeds the conscience and collective memory of the world in our era of overwhelming control and surveillance. ā€

The two documentary films capture different moments during the 2019 anti-ELAB protests in Hong Kong.

"Taking back the Legislature" is a documentation of the first instance of an occupation of Hong Kongā€™s legislature on July 1, 2019, while "Inside the Red Brick Wall" is about the week-long siege of the police on Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) in November 2019.

Pro-democracy Hong Kong students in UK harassed by Chinese students

Hong Kong students studying abroad have recently shared their experiences of being harassed when organizing events in school campuses in the UK in support of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

Jamie and Kitty are among the Hong Kong students who suffer mobbing. Chinese students called them ā€œcockroachesā€ and ā€œtraitorsā€ in Mandarin.

Kitty said the organizers of Hong Kong-related events, including herself, were all doxxed. Their personal information was posted on China social media groups and they were tagged as ā€œHong Kong Independence Supportersā€ and ā€œCockroachesā€.

Their application for holding the event was also held up by the school campus multiple times. The event was finally approved with the restriction that it has to be a silent event. ā€œ

It made me realize that our campus could no longer serve as a place for us to speak for the current situation in Hong Kongā€, said Kitty. She accused the school of ā€œfearing the loss of revenue by the tuition fees of Chinese studentsā€.

Moreover, students revealed that the #CCP used the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in the United Kingdom (#CSSAUK), as a tool to penetrate school campuses in the UK in which Chinese students are bribed into voting the CCP appointed persons to become committees of the Association.

According to the CSSAUK website, it is an association that is ā€œsupported by the Education Section of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the UKā€. It also claimed to be the largest Chinese association in the UK.
