Cable TV Staff fired after making satirical post about reducing number of users of China Mobile

Cable Finance, under Cable TV, made a satirical post last week on Facebook, titled "Where have the 7 million people gone?" The title is a reference to the reduction in number of users at China Mobile. Hashtags such as "There is only one truth" and "National Secrets Leaked" are also in the post. The post was taken down shortly after it was published, and the responsible staff has been sacked.

Cable TV acting president, Fung Tak Hung, explained that the post was based on unconfirmed rumours, and did not go in line with the principle of the channel. He added that there were no political reasons behind the dismissal.

Recent collaborations between Cable TV and China Mobile led to speculation that political reasons were behind the dismissal. In September 2018, Cable TV and China Mobile signed an agreement which allows China Mobile HK to use information provided by Cable TV, such as news, financial information and entertainment.

HK$216 billion provisional fund for police expansion approved without Democrats’ support

On Wednesday (March 24) the Legislative Council voted on a resolution involving HK$215.8 billion which included a provisional fund for the expansion of the police force.

Despite the bjection fron 24 pro-demicracy lawmaker, the funding was passed with 39 votes from the pro-Beijing camp.

The 4 amendments raised by the pro-democracy camp, including cutting budget expense for the Chief Executive office and the police were all rejected in separate voting.

LegCo Chairman from the pro-Beijing camp, Andrew Leung, insisted for the continuation of the LegCo deliberation on government budget, turning a blind eye to pro-democracy lawmakers' request to suspend discussions unrelated to Coronavirus outbreak.

The government and its supporting legislators concerned that the Administration could be disrupted if the provisional fund is not approved. Democratic Chu Hoi-dick rebutted that such disaster could only be created by Lam Administration.

U.S. Secretary of State: China Still Withholding Coronavirus Information

[Editor's note: The image shows patients sharing ventilators in a hospital in New York]

In an interview with a radio program on March 24, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repeated previous charges that Beijing's delay in sharing information about the virus had created risks to people worldwide and said this had "truly put thousands of lives at risk."

"My concern is that this cover-up, this disinformation that the Chinese Communist Party is engaged in, is still denying the world the information it needs so that we can prevent further cases or something like this from recurring again," he added.

"This is an ongoing global crisis, and we need to make sure that every country today is being transparent, sharing what's really going on, so that the global community, the global health care, infectious disease community can begin to work on this in a holistic way."

Hong Kong authorities tells 14 countries to stop accepting special British passport

//The Hong Kong government on March 25, 2021 confirmed a Reuters report that it had told 14 countries to stop accepting a British travel document that many of its young people use to apply for working holiday visas in Europe, North America and parts of Asia...

“The Hong Kong government has no authority to dictate which passports foreign governments recognise as valid,” a spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office said when asked about the Reuters report.

“The UK will continue to issue British Nationals (Overseas) passports which remain valid travel documents.”

Almost 3 million Hong Kong residents hold or are eligible for the BNO document that was created ahead of Britain handing the city back to Chinese rule in 1997.

Hong Kong has also started to mirror mainland China by not recognising dual nationality, preventing for the first time foreign diplomats from visiting locals with foreign passports in detention...//

H&M gets wiped off major Chinese apps after an old statement about forced labor reappears

Swedish clothing retailer H&M disappeared from major Chinese shopping sites and mapping apps after resurfaced comments, reportedly from last year, about its concerns over alleged forced labor in China's western region of Xinjiang.

“H&M" and "hm" in English on Taobao and JD.com yielded no results. Meanwhile, Alibaba-owned mapping app Amap as well as Baidu Maps did not display any results for the search term "H&M."

Nike also faced backlash after a statement surfaced on Chinese social media in which the sports giant said it was "concerned" about reports of forced labor in Xinjiang.

H&M, Nike Face Boycotts in China as Xinjiang Dilemma Deepens

U.S. and European retail brands in China are suddenly facing a dilemma: Embrace cotton from the contentious Xinjiang region and come under attack in the West, or reject it and risk a boycott in the world’s second-biggest economy.

After social-media users dug out an undated company statement accusing of forced labor in Xinjiang, the Communist Youth League and the People’s Liberation Army calls to boycott the Swedish retailer, Hennes & Mauritz AB. This campaign spreads quickly to Nike.

H&M shares fell as much as 4.4% in Stockholm. Nike shares fell as much as 5.4% in New York before the start of regular trading on Mar 25.

Chinese Netizens Attack Foreign Brands and Insist on Xinjiang Cotton, Dismissing Human Rights Breaches

Apparel brands including H&M, Zara, Addidas, and Nike issued a statement in 2020, voicing concern for the reportedly forced labor in the cotton production in Xinjiang.

After the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union have coordinated a joint sanction on China over the human rights violation in Xinjiang, the Chinese government and the state-owned media turned to attack foreign brands.

On the social media platform, China's Communist Youth League condemned H&M for "spreading rumors" while "trying to make a profit in China". The same comment was also announced by the state broadcaster CCTV.

The state-owned newspaper People's Daily also attacked H&M on its #Weibo, reiterating that "China's Xinjiang cotton is white and flawless." Many Chinese brands immediately put on tags in support of "China's Xinjiang cotton".

Chinese netizens and Internet personnel also joined in the boycott and attack. Some even uploaded photos of themselves burning down items from these brands while some vandalized the billboard of these brands. Chinese celebrities in showbiz also prominently cut ties with foreign brands.

#Petition to Urge British Government for the Option of “Hong Kong people” under “Ethnic Groups” in the Latest British #Census

UK’s decennial census will be held this year and a Facebook page named “HK_Brits” (英國新家鄉) has launched an online petition calling on the UK government to add "British Hong Konger" and "Hong Konger" as "Ethnic Group" options.

Petitioners said that these options describe “how we see our identity and race in the UK”.

It is stated that other Asians living in the UK have options available to them, such as "British Indian," "British Pakistani" and "British Bangladeshi," so they believe that British Hong Kongers should also have options available to them. As for Hong Kong SAR passport holders, the Joint Committee said that there should be a "Hong Konger" option.

In Britain, many Hong Kong people have made similar calls and demands in the past month or so. An organization “ Power to Hongkongers” also launched a campaign to call for Hong Kong people to fill in "Hong Konger" in the "National Identity" and "Ethnic Group" to differentiate from the "Chinese" used in the past. It is also to help the British government to grasp the demographic data of Hong Kong people so as to better formulate relevant policies.

China Misuses Photo of US Prisoners to Attack International #Boycott over #XinjiangCotton

China’s state media and Chinese netizens have been attacking multiple global fashion brands, which have decided to stop buying cotton from Xinjiang after concerns over reportedly forced labour in the industry.

In a press meeting on Mar 25, 2021, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Hua Chunying, displayed a photo showing what she claimed to be “forced labour in America picking cotton”.

It was later discovered that the workers in the photo, taken at a cotton field in Texas in 1968, were prisoners. The intention of the shot, however, seemed to be more about concerns on the correctional system and racial discrimination in the US than “forced labour” as described by Hua.
