Elderly Stabs Pro-democracy Activist "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-hung and Tells Police: "I am here to help you"

On April 16 afternoon, "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-hung protested outside the PRC's Hong Kong Liaison Office in Sai Wan with other members of the League Of Social Democrats. The group condemned Beijing for intervening in Hong Kong affairs, including the operation of the Legislature.

An elderly man suddenly stabbed Leung in the abdomen with a rusty pointy weapon. Leung was then transported to the hospital with an ambulance. The assailant was arrested at the scene and he said to the police on the way to the police car, "I am here to help you."

"Political Prosecution", "Five demands, not one less": 15 Pro-democracy Figures Arrested and Charged

Police arrested 15 pro-democracy figures in high profile on April 18, 2020. The list included heavyweight Martin Lee and Margaret Ng who are both veteran democrats and barristers. Jimmy Lai, founder of Apple Daily, was also on the list.

The 15 were mentioned in court on May 18. They were accused of organising and taking part in illegal assemblies on August 18, August 31, October 1 and October 20, 2019.

When asked in the court, Raphael Wong of the League of Social Democrats (LSD) answered by pointing out the charges as a "political prosecution", while Figo Chan of Civil Human Rights Front replied the court with "Five demands, not one less".

Avery Ng of the League of Social Democrats (LSD) said outside the court, "Compared with many youth and the charges they are facing, ours are miniscule."

The court will resume on June 15 and the trial is expected to take place at the District Court.

Chinese Media Global Times Defames Hong Kong Pro-democracy Activists

(24 May) A Belizean man named Lee Henley Hu Xiang was sent to Guangzhou People's Procuratorate on suspicion of "financing activities that jeopardise national security".

The Chinese state-run Global Times implicated him with former Legislative Council member ["Long Hair"] Leung Kwok-hung and Alex Chow Wing-hong, the former secretary-general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students.

The newspaper claimed that the photos confirmed "the enemies' hands have long since overstepped ... our bottom line". The legislation of Hong Kong's National Security Law would crack down on funds coming from "financiers supporting Hong Kong independence" as it has reached a stage where it "must not be delayed, its annulment cannot stand".

The National People's Congress would review the bill's draft and bypass the Legislative Council to enact the National Security Law. Chinese state-run media continually promoted the bill's legislation over the last few days. On 23 May, a commentary on Global Times referenced "two deplorable photos to prove that implementing legislation for national security in Hong Kong must not be delayed!" The essay opened with how its enactment would incite opinions of "serious concern" both within and outside its borders. From top to bottom, the entire country would "overwhelmingly" support it.

Although the piece did not provide any evidence to show that external bodies instigated the "chaotic situation" in Hong Kong, it insisted that the two photos were proof of its funding through foreign capital.

The two photos appeared to be taken secretly and were not accompanied by details of time and location. Chow was referred to as a "Hong Kong independence lackey". The article branded him as the same as Demosistō's Joshua Wong, a "leading figure" advocating for Hong Kong independence in Hong Kong's younger generation. "Long Hair" Leung was presented as an oppositional "radical extremist" and a part of the "older generation" that "disrupted Hong Kong". Responding to Apple Daily's query, Leung said that he only met Lee by chance and did not have much recollection of the incident or when it happened. He asked Global Times to do better research before impugning others. Chow confronted the absurdity of discussing anti-government strategy in public.

The article alleged that Lee used the cover of being an affluent representative of a US company to frenetically profit off of China and sponsor activities to "disrupt Hong Kong". That he met the two Hongkongers incriminated his close ties with "Hong Kong independence" activities.

Although Lee was captured, an effective legal mechanism to crack down on "foreign sponsors of Hong Kong independence" was still lacking because the National Security Law had yet to be enacted. There was no way to handle actions that "clearly seek to divide the country" and "endanger national security" until then.

Judge Praises Assailant who Assaulted Pro-democracy Activist in HK for Loving Society

Wong Sum-kau, aged 80, used a chisel to attack pro-democracy activist 'Long hair' Leung Kwok-hung on 16 April, 2020, near China's Liaison Office in Hong Kong.

Leung was hurt on the right side of his waist. The assailant pled guilty for one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Magistrate Cheang Kei-hong suggested that it was fortunate that the victim was not hurt badly, although the chisel is made of metal and carries certain weight.

After watching the video footage, the magistrate said he can see the assailant was “agile”.

Yet, the assailant allegedly sent death threats to pro-democracy activists, by yelling in court: "Ted Hui and Joshua Wong, they will die sooner or later". Despite this, the magistrate believed that the assailant “loves society” and "only" commited the crime because of "different political stance".

The magistrate suggested that since the defendant was willing to serve society, he should just be sentenced to community service. The case is adjourned to 13 Oct, 2020.

Man sentenced 3 months in jail after attacking Pro-demoracy Activist, Magistrate, "He showed his love to society."

An eighty-year-old man had admitted to attacking pro-democracy activist 'long hair' Leung Kwok-hung in April 2020, claiming that he had been "enforcing justice for God", "punishing Leung and let him know he is not welcomed" and "Joshua Wong and Ted Hui will die, sooner or later." On Oct 14, he was sentenced to jail for 3 months and 6 days.

Magistrate Cheang Kei Hong had praised the man for "the love he has shown towards Hong Kong", and believed that he committed the crime because of differences in political opinions.

In the past, Cheang has convicted a person for owning a bag of wire tire and gave the person a sentence of 5 and a half months while refusing to grant bail. Another person in possession of 2 jars of spray paint was sentenced by Cheang to a 5 and a half month imprisonment.

On April 16, 2021, Hong Kong court jailed some heavy-weight pro-democracy figures for "organising and participating in unauthorized assembly" during the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (#AntiELAB) Movement in 2019.

August 18, 2019 marks one of the largest protests during the movement where pro-democracy Hongkongers walked peacefully in the heavy rain from Victoria Park to Central to express their voice.

10 veteran pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong plead guilty over 'National Mourning Day' Protest in 2019; 'Long Hair' Appears in Court with Short Hair

In Hong Kong court on May 17, 2021, ten heavy-weight pro-democracy activists pleaded guilty to "organising an unauthorised protest" on October 1, 2019.

They are former legislators 'long hair' #LeungKwokHung, #AlbertHo, #LeeCheukYan, #YeungSum, #CydHo and #SinChungKai; #AppleDaily founder #JimmyLai; and activists #FigoChan, #AveryNg and #RichardTsoi. That day marked the 'National Mourning Day' protest on the establishment day of the PRC during the Anti-ELAB movement

Among the defendants, convenor of the Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) Figo Chan, 'long hair' Leung Kwok-hung, Albert Ho, and Lee Cheuk-yan also pleaded guilty to "inciting" others on September 30, 2019 to take part in the protest.

When '#LongHair' Leung Kwok-hung appeared in court on May 17, 2021, his signature long hair has been cut short. Leung is currently serving his sentence in Stanley Prison for organizing and participating in an 'unauthorized' assembly on August 18, 2019.

The last time he was seen in short hair was in 2014 when serving a 4-week sentence after being convicted of 'causing chaos' in the Legislative Council in 2011. Then, Leung was forced to cut away his long hair due to the appearance policy of the correctional services.

Leung later filed a legal review, pointing out that it is discriminatory when female inmates are allowed to keep long hair while male inmates are not. In November 2020, the Court of Final Appeal approved Leung's review.

Nevertheless, on February 1, 2021, the Department of Correctional Services implemented a new policy where inmates, regardless of their gender, cannot keep their hair beyond their shoulder's length.

Among the 47 pro-democracy activists facing allegations of “conspiracy to commit subversion” in connection with a legislative primary election in Hong Kong in 2020, 36 of them have been denied bail.

'#LongHair' Leung Kwok-hung and Jimmy Sham Tsz-kit, who are the vice-chairmen of the League of Social Democrats, were among the 36 who were denied bail.

Both of them applied for bail at Hong Kong's High Court earlier, but Judge Esther Toh Lye-ping , the designated judge of the #NationalSecurityLaw, refused to grant them bail and ordered to hold them back in custody.

The senior counsel Hectar Pun representing Leung and Sham pointed out that they have never advocated "Hong Kong independence", colluded with foreign forces or requested sanctions against the Chinese and Hong Kong governments, nor did they sign the "No Regrets" online statement.

Pun also said that Leung's local ties are strong, he has recently gotten married and is suffering from coronary heart disease, so the risk of absconding is low.

Moreover, Sham has always been active in the local #LGBT community, he married his partner who is also a Hong Kong resident in 2013, so Sham has no interest in leaving Hong Kong.

The judge issued her reasons on May 13, 2021, claiming there was no good reason to believe the two would not continue to act against national security.

The judge cited that the Department of Justice's arguments against bail, saying that Sham still stated he would continue to fight for the "#FiveDemands", in front of the police station upon his arrival on Feb 28, 2021. This indicated that there was no reason to believe he would not continue to endanger national security.

Ten Hong Kong pro-democracy politicians and activists were sentenced to jail for 14 to 18 months on May 28, 2021, after the court convicted them of organizing and joining an "unauthorised protest" on October 1, 2019, which was the national day of the People's Republic of China. Back then, the participating pro-democracy ptotesters described the day as the "#NationalMourningDay".

District Court judge Amanda Woodcock claimed that the defendants' wish for a peaceful protest is "naive" and "unrealistic".

Former legislators #AlbertHo, #LeeCheukYan and 'Long Hair' #LeungKwokHung and Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) convenor #FigoChan received a 18-month jail term.

AppleDaily founder #JimmyLai, former legislators #CydHo and #YeungSum, and former League of Social Democrats (#LSD) chairman #AveryNg were sentenced to 14 months in jail.

Only former legislator #SinChungKai and activist #RichardTsoi received suspended jail terms.

With their existing prison terms from other cases, Jimmy Lai and Lee Cheuk-yan are currently serving 20 months in prison in total while that of Leung Kwok-hung has accumulated to 22 months at the moment.

In the courtroom, some pro-democracy supporters chanted "fight on". From the defendants' seats, Leung Kwok-hung called out "Remember June 4th [Tiananmen Massacre]", while Figo Chan shout "mourn on June 4, speak out on July 1".

No Regrets to Civil Disobedience after "Watching my Fears Become Reality": #FigoChan and 7 Pro-Dem Leaders Plead Guilty to Unlawful Assembly

Figo Chan, former convenor of Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF), pleaded guilty to participating and organizing an unlawful assembly on July 1, 2020, the day on which the National Security Law took effect.

Also charged were 7 other pro-democracy leaders, including former legislators Leung Kwok-hung (#LongHair), Wu Chi-wai, and Eddie Chu.

Their case was heard in court on October 7, 2021. Among the eight being charged, seven of them pleaded guilty to the charges, in obedience of the principles of civil disobedience.

In his petition to the court, Chan said that after watching videos of that day's protests, he felt that Hong Kong had become unfamiliar since that day.

"[Hong Kong] only permits voices that support the government, and continually suppresses those who do not," he said. "As a result, numerous political parties and civic organizations disband one after another, Hongkongers have left the city in droves, and freedom and rights due to citizens are gradually disappearing."

"Looking back and watching my fears become reality, how could I regret speaking up through peaceful civil disobedience and protest?"

"May Hongkongers keep hope in our hearts", he added. "Let's hang on to each other and get through these difficult times."

The magistrate, Peter Law Tak Chuen, referred the 17 defendants to the High Court for trial.

The other 29 of them chose to plead guilty. Among them, #TiffanyYuenKaWai, #FrankieFungTatChuen, #CarolNgManYee, #GaryFanKwokWai and #HendickLuiChiHang, refused to agree all facts of the cases.

Everyone has a different way of pleading guilty:

#LauChakFung just left his seat for the washroom, and somebody said, "he will plead guilty even in the toilet."

#JoshuaWong slowly spoke out, "Plead~ guilty~."

#LiKaTat shouted, "PG!"

#TamTakChi (a.k.a. #FastBeat) confidently said while brushing his hair, "I am 'handsome'" [Handsome has a similar sound as "plead" in Cantonese]

#WuChiWai followed, "Plead ah! (認呀！)," looking at #TamTakChi, and they both laughed.

#SamCheungHoSum declared, "I plead, I plead, I plead (認啊認啊認啊)" in one go.

#VentusLauWingHong said, "For the love of my country, I plead guilty," raising uproar among defendants.

Law, the magistrate, asked whether the 26 defendants agreed with the case.

#AuNokHin stood up at that moment and expressed heavily, "I confirmed the case, and I would like to apologise to all defendants because I could not ensure the election was legal." He then slightly bowed to the defendants.

#AndrewChiuKaYin also apologized, but expressionless, "I confirm the overall case, and I apologise to everyone who helped in the pre-election." Some defendants jeered, "What are you saying (講呢啲)?"

#TamTakChi (a.k.a #FastBeat) shouted as usual, "I agree with the plot!", followed by a severe facial expression, "I agree, I agree (同意啊、同意啊)," which brought laughter to the courtroom. He then turned around, spoke to #ClaudiaMo, "Yes, excellent!" and raised his arms to the air with thumbs up.

#LeslieShumOFai interrupted, "I am not a comedy actor."

The magistrates confirmed whether Tam agreed with the entire case. He answered, "Yes, then I agree with the full case." Law raises the question once more, "You agree?" "The plot? Yes." Tam replied

It is understood that there will be no jury at the trial. This case will be handled by three designed judges, as in the case of #TongYingKit. It reminds us of #OwenChowKaShing, who did not plead guilty and yelled at the court after the restriction on reporting was lifted, "Trial without a jury is unjust."

This was probably the most potent conclusion in West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts for a year and a half.
