World Politicians, Human Rights Groups Reportedly Ask Olympic Committee to Remove Beijing as 2022 Winter Olympics Host

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC)ā€•a group of parliamentarians from the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and Europeā€•had formally asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reconsider whether China should get to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. Chinaā€™s foreign ministry has yet to respond.

Sir Iain Duncan Smith, member of the British parliament and co-chairman of the IPAC, said, ā€œThe free world does have a strong position to say the bullying, the threatening, the internal repression, the border disputes, the arrogant attitude to your neighbours, the breaking of the treaty with Hong Kongā€•these must have consequences. At the moment the Chinese believe these consequences are no more than just condemnation.ā€

Earlier, 160 human rights groups wrote to the IOC asking it to remove China as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics in response to its suppression of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, the imprisonment of the Uighur people in Xinjiang, and its other human rights issues.

Citizens Increase Calls for Canada to Stand Up to China

Canadian citizens want continued, harsher treatment towards China.

In response to the appointment of Catroina Le May Doan as head of the Canadian 2022 Olympic delegation, an Ottawa citizen calls for Canada to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics entirely.

ā€œHow can we possibly be thinking of sending Canadians under our flag to a country that is holding two of our citizens hostage; that has threatened Canadians in Hong Kong; and that continues to use trade as a weapon against us?ā€

Citing Canadaā€™s precedence of boycotting the Moscow Games in 1980, he added that the repression of the Uyghurs and democracy in Hong Kong ā€œshould be enough for fair-minded countries to withdraw.ā€

His opinion towards the Chinese government regarding Chinese human rights abuses is echoed by another citizen, who applauds Bob Rae, the Canadian UN Ambassador, for mentioning the alleged genocide in the Xinjiang Province during a UN conference.

He adds that ā€œLike-minded nations must stand up to the CCP and show our support for the Chinese people by supporting Taiwan and Hong Kong.ā€

Canadians support harder line against China over treatment of Uyghurs

A strong majority of Canadians both approve of Parliamentā€™s declaration that China is carrying out genocide against its Uyghur Muslim minority and favour a harder line toward the country, including economic sanctions and moving the 2022 Winter Olympics out of Beijing.

A poll by Nanos Research showed that 83 per cent of Canadians either support or somewhat support the unanimous vote by the House of Commons, declaring Chinese atrocities against Uyghurs and Turkic minorities in Xinjiang to be in contravention of the United Nationsā€™ Genocide Convention.

ā€œItā€™s pretty clear that Canadians see this as genocide and the polls suggest that they are ready for action and a hardline when it comes to responding to the government of Chinaā€ Mr. Nanos said.

2 Years After PolyU Siege, 19-year-old HongKongers in Exile: "I Earnestly Want to Return to Hong Kong"

Read Part 1:

Continue with Part 2:
As he was born after the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, he does not have a #BNO passport. He can only seek #PoliticalAsylum in the UK.

During the waiting process, he could not work for a living, resulting in a difficult time. He revealed that when he first arrived in the UK, he was a "hard labour" for his "parents" in the UK from HK, limiting his freedom.

After a while, he got rid of them and stayed at a temporary dormitory provided by the UK government.

Ivan said, "the accommodation is very disrespectful nor feeling staying alone. I don't think they treat me like a person. Throughout the time, there was one fellow staying with me but left. The rest were asylums from other countries. Only a few of us are from Asia, and I am the only person from Hong Kong.

Going with the psychological shadow

The accommodation for asylum is lonely and with occasional sudden room-check by the staff at the outsourcing company of management. This action recalls Ivan's fear of police arresting him at his home's door before leaving HK after the siege.

In addition, he had his first political asylum interview in June this year. However, he couldn't finish the interview due to emotional problems after 6 hours of examination. The application is still yet to be approved after a year.

He has only recently received Ā£8 each week from the British #HomeOffice.

Ivan stated, "life is obviously not too well financially, but the most difficult is to face the uncertain future. Applying for political asylum is complicated, with many interviews and evidence preparations. The waiting duration increases asylum's mental health burden as we can't work and may need to sign in with the police frequently."

The guilt of a "survivor"

Ivan and his friends founded "#HongKongAidUK" for HKers in the UK, supporting other political asylum seekers from Hong Kong with his own experience, providing suggestions and referrals. The organisation recently provides winter clothes for financially tight people.

Apart from helping UK HKers, he continues to speak out for democracy - calling to boycott #Beijing2022 Olympics with #Tibetan and #Uyghur groups, as well as setting up a street exhibition about HK on the #RemembranceDay. He also reminds the foreign HKers not to forget the November in 2019, full of blood.

Despite his work for HK, Ivan can hardly get away from his contradiction and guilt from his heart, and he uses it as a self-sarcasm.

He indicated, "I always say that there should have no separation between myself and the place, but then I left. It makes me feel guilty for being a survivor and think about what I can do more for HK.

If I go into imprisonment, I will not be able to come out in a short term, which means I will spend a lot of time in jail. Yet, since I arrived in a foreign country, I can use this time to do things according to my will."

Canada Diplomatically Boycotts Beijing Winter Olympics

#Canada announces that they will join the diplomatic boycott to #Beijing2022 #WinterOlympics, and will not have a delegation to attend.

Canadian President #JustinTrudeau indicated that many partner countries are extremely concerned about the continuous behaviour on #humanrights violation. "We have raised the concerns on China's human rights issues for years, and we have to reiterate our stand to #China."

The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada stated that #Trudeau had a false accusation on China's "human rights violation". China strongly dissatisfies Canada using this reason to diplomatically boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics and has been raised solemn negotiation to Canada.

The spokesperson says that the Canadian government tragically treats the Aboriginals and that the nationwide ethnic discrimination in Canada is severe. China continues that Canada does not qualify to teach or criticise China about human rights. They suggest that Canada should not politicise sports events and should stop interfering with the hosting of the Beijing Olympics, or else, Canada will bring disgrace to itself.

Canadian and Taiwanese Artists Uses Music and Drawings to Show their Support on Human Rights

#BeijingWinterOlympics has begun since #Feb04 with boycotts voices circulating the world.

Some artists show their dissatisfaction with #HumanRightsViolation in China with paintbrushes and music notes. A Canadian painter creates "Genocide Games" to mock Beijing Winter Olympic while a Taiwanese band composes "The Times Looking After the Righteous (#ę™‚ä»£ēœ‹é”§ę£ē¾©ēš„äŗŗ)" to criticise dictatorship.

Both works show support to the belief in democracy and freedom.

The Canadian artist, Ricker Choi, is originally from Hong Kong but emigrated to Canada when he was 13. Yet, he is always concerning the situation in Hong Kong. Ricker has created lots of artworks since 2019, supporting Hong Kong democracy movements.

When the winter Olympics was approaching, his heart was filled with emotions. As a result, he picked up his pen and produced a picture "#GenocideGames".

Ricker said, "China claimed to improve the human rights issues in 2008 #OlympicGames, to be free, democratic and open. In fact, the reality is, however, the opposite. They suppress #Uyghurs and #Tibetans, persecuting Hong Kong, threatening Taiwan. Letting them host the Olympic Games again is the greatest sarcasm."
