Mass Protest in Washington, US Representative Calls for Punishment for CCP as Transnational Organized Crime Group

More than 10 pro-democracy groups assembled in front of the US Capitol on 1 October in protest of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) tyrannical rule. A number of members of the US Congress attended the demonstration in support of the cause. A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives demanding that the CCP be designated as a transnational organized crime group, prosecuted, and punished.

Over 10 organizations from Washington and New York gathered in front of the US Capitol in protest of the CCP’s persecution of the Uyghurs and the Tibetans, erosion of freedom in Hong Kong, suppression of dissidents, and bullying and intimidating Taiwan by military means. Hundreds attended the demonstration, including a number of Hongkongers, Tibetans, Uyghurs, and pro-democracy Chinese activists.

Speaking at the demonstration, Democratic representative Tom Suozzi thanked the participants for exposing what the CCP had done. “No new movies, fancy pamphlets, sanitized history, or trade deals will make these [acts by the CCP] palatable. We must be aware of the threat the CCP poses to all those around the world who love freedom as well as to Chinese citizens,” said Suozzi.

Republican representative Scott Perry said he would hold the CCP responsible for what they had done. He introduced a bill at the Congress the same day, asking that the CCP be designated as a transnational organized crime (TOC) group, and prosecuted and punished as such. “The CCP is detaining people against their will, altering cultures, damaging or eradicating languages, coercively harvesting organs, building concentration camps, and so on and so forth. And yet, they are getting away with these by virtue of being the legitimate ruler of China when in fact it is a criminal group subjecting China to oppressive rule. We need to define them as such and hand out fitting punishment to them,” he said.

Global outcry over Xinjiang and Hong Kong maddened Beijing

In the declaration drafted by Germany and presented at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday (6 Oct), 39 predominantly Western countries denounced China for gross human rights violations in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang and the autonomous region of Tibet, and for limiting political and personal freedoms in Hong Kong.

Regarding Hong Kong, the German ambassador expressed “deep concerns” about elements of the recently enacted national security law.

Beijing is angry after many countries support the Germany-led initiative to condemn rights violations in China.

Experts in Education Sector Criticise the Hong Kong Government for Firing a Teacher without Allowing Him to Defend

A teacher at Alliance Primary School, Kowloon Tong was deregistered by the Education Bureau for "promotion of Hong Kong independence" in early October.

James Hon, former chairman of the Council on Professional Conduct in Education (#CPCE), explained that normally if a case is handled by the CPCE, the decision of firing the teacher would be made after considering the complainant's and defendant’s statement at a hearing. However, in this case, the teacher was fired without being given a chance to defend.

Hon criticised the Education Bureau for treating the teacher unfairly and that it was very inconceivable for the teacher to be fired just because of one discussion section.

Leung Yan-wing, former council member of the CPCE, criticised that there was no academic rationale for the Education Bureau to fire the teacher. He also suspected that the Bureau’s decision was based on political correctness considering the fact that the Bureau has announced to change the contents of textbooks in Liberal Education recently.

Leung worried that this case would serve as a warning to teachers and stop them from initiating discussions of controversial topics from their professional perspective, which in turn will cause a huge damage to the profession of education.

HK Government attempts to loosen up election law to allow permanent citizens living in China to cast ballots in its offices in China

The 2020 Hong Kong Legislative Council election was originally scheduled on 6 September 2020 until it was postponed by the government for a whole year to 5 September 2021. An amendment bill to existing Elections Ordinance was reportedly prepared for LegCo deliberation next month.

The amendment bill was said to enable Hong Kong citizens residing in Mainland to vote. As well, “priority lanes”were proposed to facilitate not only elderlies but staff members of ballot office, and members of disciplined forces, including Hong Kong Police to cast their votes.

A source revealed that under the amendment, Hong Kong permanent residents living on the mainland would be allowed to cast ballots in polling stations set up at the city government’s offices there, without having to travel back to the city. The source said, “the Hong Kong government’s offices in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai are likely to be the locations where the first batch of polling stations on the mainland will be set up.”

Thai Police Shows Three-finger Salute to Civilians in Support of Freedom and Democracy

Pro-democracy protests in Thailand have entered the fifth day on October 18, 2020. Many scenes in Thailand recalled the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong: the supply chain formed by the gathering public; rallies that were initiated by the public and took place in different areas; the public which took turn to speak up for the leaderless movement; and the 'red sea' moment when protesters gave way to ambulances.

According to the report by The Matter (twitter@thematterco), the public rallying at Victory Monument in Bangkok chanted "Hong Kong is a country! Return independence to Hong Kong!". It was reported that on Oct 18, 2020, over 10,000 civilians protested in the area.

Moreover, AFP journalist Mladen Antov captured a Thai police showing the pro-democracy three-figure salute to the protesters. The photo has gone viral on the Internet. Many contrasted it with a photo of the Hong Kong police but showing the middle finger to the pro-democracy protesters during the 2019 Anti-Extradition Law Movement in Hong Kong.

According to Thai Enquirer, a former police officer told the public he resigned as he did not want to cause harm to any civilian. He also reminded his former colleagues that the duty of the police is to serve the public.

In Chiang Mai, university students held rally and expressed that in case the students in Bangkok cannot hold out, they would continue the fight.

Netizens initiated rallies in over 20 locations including Pathumtani and Nonthabur outside of the capital.

Brutality of HK Police Makes its Way to Thailand

Carrying on to the 5th day in the row, the pro-democracy movement in Thailand has no sign of abate. Over the weekend, Bangkok, protesters continued to gather, flouting a new gathering restriction for no more than 5 persons, calling for Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to step down and the government to be re-organized.

In a press briefing on Oct 17, 2020, Thai Police clarified disinformation that has went viral on social media, including an image showing black-clad protesters being arrested by the police.

With hands tied to their back, the photo shows young protesters being forced to kneel on their knees facing a wall.

The Thai police made clear that the protest scene captured in the image was not in Thailand, but Hong Kong.

Who is the puppet? — Did he leave out the famous Tank Man on Tiananmen Square in 1989 in his photo collection on purpose?

Former district councilor Dominic Lee Tsz-king, who is known for his pro-Beijing stance, called pro-democracy protesters actors on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/leetszking/posts/5135204823171645).

In a collage of photos with protest scenes in Hong Kong, Thailand and Ukraine showing in common a peaceful protester standing in front of armed police, begging them to retreat and not to injure the innocent civilians, Lee wrote “No such thing as old way so long as it works,” scorning protesters as nothing but “mere actors performing theatrical acts”.

Lee is a member of the pro-Beijing People's Party in Hong Kong, which is chaired by Beijing loyalist and former Secretary for Security Regina Ip.

Australia asked China to Clarify whether the Instruction to Chinese Companies Not to buy Australian Coal is a Political Countermeasure

Australia asked China to Clarify whether the Instruction to Chinese Companies Not to buy Australian Coal is a Political Countermeasure

The Australian government on Tuesday (13 October) asked China to clarify whether it had instructed Chinese companies to stop buying Australian coal as a political countermeasure, jeopardizing a business involving about $10 billion (HK$78 billion) a year.

Australian Trade Minister, Simon Birmingham, said he had inquired China through diplomatic channels that whether it had instructed Chinese companies to stop buying Australian coal. “I am not hoping us to get lost in the speculation, but we are working with industries to take action and to have discussions with China," Birmingham said.

Many trade publications, including S&P Global Platts, reported that China's state-run energy suppliers and steel mills had received "verbal notice" from the government to stop buying Australian coal. Tensions between China and Australia have continued in recent months as a result of trade disputes and spy scandals. The economy in Australia has fallen into recession for the first time in nearly 30 years, and the ban from China on Australian coal will have a serious impact on its energy-dependent economy. Besides, the conservative government in Australia is also affected as it has vigorously promoted the coal industry to secure political support in key regions of the country.

The discord between China and Austalia has been escalating. Beijing threatened the exports on Australian wine and beef while Australia called for an investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 outbreak. Beijing also warned its citizens not to visit Australia or study aboard, alleging the anti-Asian racial discrimination in Australia during the pandemic.
