Families Apart: Daughter Separated From Mother Due to Indiscriminate Arrest

Today is the National Day and the Mid Autumn Festival. The police were heavily presented in Causeway Bay, with repeated actions stopping-and-frisking as well as arresting lots of patrons and passers-by. The parent of one of the arrestees, Miss Cheung, said she was shopping and preparing to eat dinner in Causeway Bay with her daughter and her friend, when the police suddenly set up cordon stopping and searching them. However, only she was released.

She was both confused and infuriated. “We just wanted to buy some books and eat out as it was Mid Autumn Festival. But then they rounded us like catching fish with a net,” she said in distress. “They did everything—checking your ID card, taking you pictures, everything.”

“Then they asked me to wait outside.” However, Miss Cheung didn’t see her 38-year-old daughter and her friend coming out with her. She stressed they didn’t do anything, not even chanting slogans. “The books we bought today are still in the bag!”

She found the incident baffling. “Isn’t this indiscriminate arresting?” She is now in great distress. She tried to approach the police, asking where her daughter and her friend will go, but they simply replied she will have to wait. “You will not be able to find her even in the police station!”
