"Will the police be held accountable?" Police: No comment

The magistrate strongly rebuked the police officers who gave evidence in court for lying repeatedly, sophistry, unfounded speeches, inconsistency, and improper performance of duties.

Over a year since the anti-ELAB movement, more than 2,000 people have been prosecuted. Stand News has compiled more than 300 completed cases. Statistics found that at least 21 cases were not convicted because police officers’ statements were not accepted by the judges, involving at least 30 police officers, with their ranks from junior police officer, sergeant, trainee inspector, to senior inspector.

A barrister pointed out that the role of the police in court should be presenting the collected evidence in court accurately and in truthfulness. When a police officer makes a false statement in court and deliberately misleads the court, he too can also be prosecuted.

Stand News asked the police whether they would pursue the 30 police officers criticized by the officers. The police refused to respond positively on the grounds of "not commenting on individual cases."

Shek Su-Ming, executive committee member of the Barister Association, said that problems with police officers' testimony have occurred in the past, not just in anti-ELAB cases. However, in recent days, the magistrate's intensive and severe criticism is more "special" and "really catches it well." Ng Chung Luen, a practising barrister and former convener of Legal and Political Science, pointed out that the police sometimes made human errors in the process of producing evidence. It was originally understandable. However, recently the magistrate accused the police officers of giving false statements to the police have drawn worthy attention to the problem.

Even if the police officers were severely criticized by the judge, most of them had no consequences.

Thailand protests: Risking it all to challenge the monarchy

//A growing movement among students has been calling for political reform in Thailand.

//"The King shall be enthroned in a position of revered worship" and that "No person shall expose the King to any sort of accusation or action".

//Thais are taught to respect, revere and love the monarchy, but also to fear the consequences of speaking about it.

//...have called for legal action against the student leaders, for an investigation into how they funded Monday's spectacularly-produced protest, and into which "dark hand" instigated the youngsters to come up with such outrageous demands.

//The student leader who read out the manifesto, Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul, has since stayed mostly on her campus, planning further rallies, and nervously watching the plain-clothes police who are now constantly monitoring her.

//the collapse of tourism has hit the economy very hard and drawn attention to one of the world's widest gaps between rich and poor.

//The decision earlier this year to dissolve a dynamic new political party, which had attracted the support of many younger voters, gave them the sense that the military-dominated political system was denying them a voice.

//That was compounded by the abduction and presumed murder of a Thai activist in Cambodia, blamed by some on elements close to the palace, and then by the dropping of all criminal charges against a member of one of Thailand's wealthiest families over the killing of a police officer in a hit-and-run incident eight years ago.

//On top of that, since the Covid-19 crisis started King Vajiralongkorn has spent nearly all his time living in a hotel in Germany, prompting a Twitter hashtag #มีกษัตริย์ไว้ทําไม #whydoweneedaking?, which was reposted more than a million times.

//He stressed that he wanted to reform, not overthrow, the constitutional monarchy.

//He focused in particular on the huge assets of the Crown Property Bureau, which, under the late King Bhumibol, had been notionally held in trust for the benefit of the Thai people, but have now been declared the personal property of the king, making him by far the wealthiest person in Thailand.

//Anon also questioned King Vajiralongkorn's decision to take personal command of all military units based in Bangkok

//"the three pillars of this country, nation, religion and monarchy, must be revered, not brought down to be played with like this. That's not the right way under a constitutional monarchy."

Pompeo: Not Cold War 2.0 – CCP Threat Worse than Soviet Union

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, "What's happening now isn't Cold War 2.0", as the threat China poses to Western countries is in some ways "worse" than that posed by the former Soviet Union.

Addressing the Czech Senate on his first stop of the five-day visit to Central Europe on Wednesday, August 12, Pompeo spoke about "the challenge of resisting the CCP [Chinese Communist Party] threat is in some ways worse" than that during the cold war, because “the CCP is already enmeshed in our economies, in our politics, in our societies in ways the Soviet Union never was.”

In his speech, he recalled the years of Soviet suppression of the Czech Republic. While Russia continues to "undermine" Czech democracy and security using disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks, Pompeo believes that China would pose an even greater threat because of her "campaigns of coercion of control". As an example, he cited the cancellation of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra's concert tour in China due to Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib's pro-Taiwan policies, arguing that this shows that “the CCP leverages economic power to coerce countries".

Pompeo also mentioned that during the Cold War, the Czech Republic, "and others that suffered behind the Iron Curtain, know best of all how deeply communists plunge societies into ruin and repression". He urged Czech senators to "stand up for the sovereignty and freedoms" that the Czech people demanded for their country between 1968 and 1989.

Pompeo signs 5G Clean Network Security joint declaration with Slovenia

The U.S. and Slovenia have signed a joint declaration on "5G Clean Network Security" that aims to keep untrusted telecommunications vendors out of Slovenia, meaning the country's 5G network will bar Chinese companies like Huawei. The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is on a visit to Central Europe, said in a press conference "Free nations must work together to confront authoritarian threats”.

Pompeo met with Slovenian officials in the mountain lake town of Bled, Slovenia, known as the "most beautiful castle" in the country. He said, "The tide is turning against the Chinese Communist Party and its efforts to control information". Over the past year, the U.S. has signed similar agreements with Poland, Estonia and the Czech Republic, pledging that 5G suppliers would not be subject to control by a foreign government without independent judicial review, which effectively excludes Chinese telecommunication equipment makers such as Huawei from their 5G network.

Huawei-built data centre a 'failed investment', Papua New Guinea says

A Huawei-built data centre in Papua New Guinea has been coined a “failed investment,” after a technical review found serious security vulnerabilities in an important piece of the country’s digital infrastructure.

There have been concerns all around the world about the security of technology made by a companies headquartered in China, where the law compels organizations and citizens to “support, assist and co-operate” with the country’s intelligence apparatus.

Cracks are starting to show in countries that have relied on China to build its digital infrastructures. They are effectively dealing with two major problems: a problem with security, and a problem with reliability.

Chinese netizens go after Trump with AI-generated fake accounts

In recent months, a network of fake Chinese accounts with artificially generated followers has been criticizing US President Donald Trump on various social media channels, US media reported.

According to a research report by Graphika, a company cited by the Washington Post and other US media, these AI generated fake accounts have been bashing the Trump administration on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube since June. At first glance, it doesn't look like there's anything strange about those account profile pictures, but after careful observations, Graphika discovered that they seem to be produced by an AI program that creates fake faces. Pro-China groups then use these synthetic images to create accounts to share and post comments to attract more views.

Graphika says the common features of the account avatars are the blurred background and the position of the eyeballs in the photo. These strange photos are most likely the work of the Generative Adversarial Network (#GAN), a machine learning technology that specializes in creating seemingly real but fake faces. By studying real people and learning how to recreate facial features, GAN generates synthetic faces. The results aren't always perfect, and AI programs often have trouble showing accessories and other objects around facial features. The backgrounds are often left blurred as well.

City University Turns Student Dormitory into Quarantine Facility And Informed Residents Only by email

The Student Representative Office (#SRO) of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) notified the residents of Lee Shau Kee Hall (Hall 6) on 16 August, 2020 that the dormitory will be transformed into a “contingency hub” handling potential cases of #COVID19 for a month after the renovation stsrting in Mid August.

Residents and hall tutors attached to the dormintory were all shocked by the email. They said that the University had ignored their opinions and proceed with an arbitrary decision.

To begin with, the location of the quarantine facility was controversial. According to sources, the original plan of the University was to assign one to two floors in each hall for quarantine purpose. Lee Shau Kee Hall (Hall 6) was chosen as a facility, as it is conveniently located, but it also implies unimaginable impact if the Wuhan pneumonia cases are not handled properly in this building.

In the email, the University simplified a quarantine facility into a “provisional” action plan and attempted to dilute the oppositional voice of the student residents.

Given that it takes a few days to set up quarantine facilities for peoole who had preliminary confirmed with COVID-19 or close contact of COVID-19 patient, the university's insistence of using Hall 6 could be a sugar coated wordplau.

The Univsrsity refused to provide the arrangement of quarantine facility in details. These questions include:
what quarantine measures in details are (e.g., can person undergoing quarantine use the common area?), what the arrangements are for those students initially planned to move in Hall 6 after mid of August. SOR has replied that they have offered affected residents of with one-off-flex-option on deferred checked in date or withdrawal of 2021/2022 with hall fee adjustment/ refund where applicable. SOR reaffirmed it is necessary to establish “Contingency Hub” in order to ensure the safety of lodgers. Regarding the quarantine measures in details, SOR hasn’t replied explicitly but stated the actual use and the operation of Contingency Hub reserves if any subject to Center of Protection (CIP) instructions. And SOR hasn’t given any feedback for other questions raised by us.

In a recent advertisement post by a talent company, the Hong Kong SAR Government is recruiting 7 actors who need to be "Caucasian men" to play terrorists. The purpose and the content of video is unknown while shooting will start in September 2020.

On June 30, 2020, the National Security Law came into effect in Hong Kong after being inserted directly by Beijing into Hong Kong Basic Law by bypassing the city's own legislature. The new law indicates severe penalty including life sentences to secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.
