EU pays close attention to the postponement of Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong

EU continues to support Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy, in accordance with the “one country, two systems” principle. However, the EU has agreed on options for drawing the consequences of the new situation in Hong Kong as set out in the Council conclusions of 24 July.

The proposed postponement by one year of the elections to the Legislative Council through recourse to emergency powers and the recent disqualification of pro-democracy candidates, including sitting lawmakers call into question the exercise of the democratic rights and freedoms guaranteed under Hong Kong’s Basic Law.

"Fly With You" One-Year Anniversary: Hongkongers Flooded the Airport to Introduce the 5 Democratic Demands to Tourists

On Aug 9, 2019, thousands of Hongkongers welcomed international visitors at the Airport and introduced the pro-democracy movement to them (see video taken on the day).

This is also the population's supportive response to the strike launched by over 3,640 staff members of the Civil Aviation Department and 4 local air companies on 5 August, 2019, being Hong Kong's largest strike since 1967 and causing over 200 flights to cancel.

In the evening, civilians in Wong Tai Sin and Shatin gathered for the traditional Hungry Ghost Festival, where paper offerings are burnt for the deceased. Yet, the occasion was faced with rounds of tear gas fired by the police.

All these efforts aimed to express population's demands for genuine dual universal suffrage and the protection of rights.

Hong Kong Doctor Explains Why China's Mixed Testing Method is Not Effective and HK Government's Practice is Impoverished

There are three main ways to collect specimen for COVID19 tests, including nose swab, deep throat swab, and deep throat saliva sampling.

Regarding a Chinese expert’s criticism of the deep throat saliva sample testing, a public hospital doctor in Hong Kong pointed out that this was because nose swab and deep throat swab were mainly used in China, and mixed testing will require more workload.

Respiratory Medicine specialist in Hong Kong Dr. Leung Chi-chi explained that the common practice in China was to mix 5 samples, and it was less effective. If a patient is highly contagious and carries more virus, then the test result will still be positive. Yet, if the patient is in an early state of infection, or carries less virus, then the result may come back as negative. Mixed sample testing was usually used in large-scale testing instead of clinical diagnosis to avoid an inaccurate result.

In China, medical staff collect specimen for the testing through a throat swab, whereas the Hong Kong government asks Hong Kong citizens to collect specimen themselves. Doctors in Hong Kong criticised that this practice was even more impoverished than China.
