- During the 1998 financial crisis, China helped Hong Kong to combat international “predators”
- During SARS, China helped Hong Kong fight the epidemic
- During COVID-19, the community treatment facilities were not built by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, but by China’s mobile cabin hospital team

Thanks to our Motherland

(3 Aug) From ancient China's Four Great Inventions to the Four Great New Inventions in modern times, from combating financial "predators" to building a mobile cabin hospital in the Asia Expo for Hong Kong, perhaps free-ride is actually the greatest invention in China. If the U.S. is angered by China's theft of intellectual property rights again, perhaps Hongkongers should say "First Time?".

-- Voluntary Post: clarification on behalf of others --

In the past few days, I have seen the following photos in many group chats. Many have expressed their gratitude to the Chinese National Team for the establishment of the mobile cabin hospital in Hong Kong.

However, I would like to clarify on behalf of my friends who are involved in this project that this temporary hospital at the Asia Expo was "built by the staff of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority (HA), with their own efforts".

The National Team came to do the testing and assisted with the subsequent modifications, but was not involved in the "establishment" of the temporary hospital. They were probably not in Hong Kong during the establishment.

I know there are many things that the HA has not done as well as expected, and many of my friends have also said that there is much room for improvement in this temporary hospital. But where they have done well, we should encourage them, and we should not pass the successes and mistakes of their efforts to others.

Uyghurs for sale: Policy Brief Report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI)

More than 80,000 Uyghurs were transferred to work in factories across China, some sent directly from detention camps. China’s social re-engineering campaign targeting minority citizens hasn’t ceased, but rather, it grows expeditiously. Under conditions suggesting forced labour, Uyghurs are working in factories that supply at least 82 well-known global brands in technology, clothing, and automotive sectors; this includes Apple, BMW, Gap, Huawei, Nike, Samsung, Sony, and Volkswagen. The full list can be found in P.31-39.

Re-education camps
Re-education camps first aroused attention in 2017. Millions of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities have disappeared into a vast network of ‘re-education camps’ in Xinjiang. Inside the camps, detainees are subjected to political indoctrination, forced to renounce their religion and culture, and subjected to torture.

The new phase
Government officials now claim that the ‘trainees’ have ‘graduated’ to being forced to work in factories. Local governments and private brokers are paid a price per head by the Xinjiang provincial government to organise the labour assignments. This is literally human trafficking. It is nearly impossible for workers to refuse or escape. They are under constant surveillance, isolated, and subjected to arbitrary detention and threats against their family members.

Every purchase makes a difference
Foreign governments, businesses, and civil society groups should act now.
As a consumer, your purchase casts your vote. Be aware of the companies involved. Push brands to be more transparent about the make-up of their supply chains. Demand companies to make new public commitments, uphold current commitments, and to not use forced and coerced labour. Geographic barriers do not hinder you from stopping the trend.

Taiwan Celebrity Shows Support for Hong Kong in Pursuit of Freedom and Democracy

Taiwanese showbiz celebrity, Ili Cheng, nicknamed Jipai Mei, showed her support for Taiwan DPP's candidate for the mayor of Kaohsiung, Chen Chi-mai, on Aug 1.

During the event, Cheng said that she had supported Taiwan’s 2014 Sunflower Movement and because of that, many of her job opportunities were cancelled in the following two years.

When she went to Hong Kong to conduct a publicity campaign, she was even deported by the Hong Kong Immigration Department and was being treated as if she was a criminal.

She hopes that the Taiwanese will not forget the "fellow Hong Kong protesters" of the past year and not give up on Hong Kong. Wiping her tears, she rallied the Taiwanese people to continue to stand for what is right.

"I hope you never ever give up on Hong Kong. Hong Kong, Add Oil [fight on]!"

Famous Japanese Voice Actress retaliated Chinese fan’s accusation for “hurting Chinese feeling” on Twitter

(3 Aug) Japanese voice actress Yuu Asakawa, known for voicing the character Medusa (Rider) in the popular Japanese animation, Fate series, liked Tsai Ing-wen’s tweet about mourning the death of Taiwan’s ex-President Lee Teng-hui.

A Chinese fan tweeted her, criticizing her for liking “political sensitive” tweets and has “hurt his feeling as a Chinese”. Asakawa retaliated by retweeting his tweet and asked the netizen not to assume her ideology simply by a like button.

Netizens found out that Asakawa has liked numerous tweets from Dalai Lama, another “prohibited” figure in China.

Yuu Asakawa is one of the lead voice actresses in the highly anticipated movie “Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel”. She also voices numerous characters in the popular mobile game “Fate/Grand Order”.

Opinion Poll: Former PRC Premier Zhu Rongji and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen Are The Most Popular Among Hongkongers

On 4 August, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) published the popularity ranking of political leaders across the Straits.

Former premier of the People's Republic of China, Zhu Rongji was the top-ranked with a score of 61.6. Zhu was most remembered for saying that the Central government would be blamed forever if it ever destroyed Hong Kong.

Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen is the second most popular among Hongkongers, and her score was 57.6. Secretary-general of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jin-ping was ranked last in this study, with a score of 40.7.

Deputy CEO of HKPORI, Dr. Chung Kim-wah believes that the results reflect Hongkongers’ stance on the different political systems.

Chung was asked if he was worried about violating the National Security Law by conducting this survey. He replied that he will continue surveying the masses on relevant topics, just like how he has been doing it since 1997, until the day he gets accused.

“Give me a reason for stopping what I have always been doing."

He stated that carrying out studies about the opinion on Hong Kong or Taiwan independence is not action to advocate these approaches. Rather, the results were just a reflection of the views of the citizens on the situation, and for the country's leaders as reference.

Hong Kong Police to Arrest More Pro-democracy Activists

A number of pro-democracy
including but not limited to Joshua Wong, lawmakers Chu Hoi-dick and Wu Chi-wai, district councillor Lester Shum, Civil Human Rights Front vice-convenor Figo Chan and former student leader Sunny Cheung, have been told by the police they will be charged with unauthorised assembly for allegedly participating in a June 4 vigil in Victoria Park.

The annual large-scale commemorative event was banned this year by the authorities, who cited restrictions on public gatherings put in place to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Shum said the move shows the police can't even tolerate a totally peaceful gathering, and the charges are an attempt to harass and intimidate them.

"Upon charging us, the Department of Justice can demand or request the judge or courts to confiscate our passports or limit our freedom to leave Hong Kong," he said. "I think this is what the Beijing government wants."

#JoshuaWong: "I'm prosecuted by the Government Again"

Wong wrote the following
after the police notified numerous,pro-democracy activists including Wong of their impending arrest:

//Months after the Tiananmen Square vigil this year, I was just informed by Hong Kong Police that they will charge me with "knowingly taking part in an unauthorized assembly," with the date of my court appearance scheduled on 15 September.

Just 24 hours after I have left the court yesterday morning, I am now facing another charge by the government. Clearly, the regime plans to stage another crackdown on the city's activists by all means.

More worryingly, due to the lengthy legal process, I will probably be further barred from leaving Hong Kong to tell our truth to the world even after my current case over police headquarters siege ends. As our voices might not be heard soon, we hope the world can continue speaking up for the city's liberty and human rights.//

CCP’s hand has reached Singapore and US long ago

(24 Jul)No one will expect an international relation expert in Singapore is indeed a spy sent by CCP to spy on the US. The show hand of the espionage battle between China and US is only getting more and more intense. First, on researchers like Tang juan, who conceal their military studies background, the states can charge them with Visa fraud, which has a lower bar for prosecution. The merit of such charge is that no-one has to prove any state secret is stolen at all, and 10 years in jail will be given if found guilty. So people can make an example of it, so to scare the Chinese researchers.

The details of the espionage case was released today but the spy had been arrested in Nov 2019. It shows that the intelligence department has already begun tightening the net, and is no longer afraid of alerting the enemy.

Defendant Yao Jun Wei admitted to breaching the Foreign Agents registration act, section 951. This section was used against Cuba, and is then expanded to all agents who threaten the US homeland security. Combining with the Foreign agent registration act, it is being put into full use. As long as the agents are not registered and are acting in substance in their spy role, they commit a crime. In this sense, all those Chinese enterprises who expand their businesses in the US, will easily be affected under this law. Who will disclose that they are indeed working for the CCP? TikTok wishes to sell the business in a rush, and swaps all the Chinese management personnels. This is simply because they, too, fear this law.

Yao Jun Wei expanded his business in the US for the CCP, and runs a fake consultancy company, like those civilian think tanks. Intelligence, that is not publicised, is the most difficult to obtain, and is highly restricted to those in the authority. According to those mole cases disclosed by the Department of State, most were tempted with woman or money. Mostly those in financial difficulty were reached. Yet, when the Trump government arrested these moles high profile, the public servants became more careful and no longer accept gifts easily. This in turn, increases the difficulty for CCP to steal intelligence. Yao Jun Wei’s case demonstrates CCP’s move adapt to such changes.

Yao Jun Wei used Linkedin to “remodify” action of espionage into a legal business. He sent out recruitment ads en masse, and recruited target to write consultancy reports of different subjects. He lied that these reports are for research of Asian clients, and such action will be safe. Each report is priced from USD 1000 to 2000, and this scam is targeted at public servants who want quick money. The court released three examples, in which the CCP obtained three insider news from such operation, including Japan purchasing F35A, the influence of retreat of US army in Afghanistan on China and the confidential background of a cabinet official.

Chinese Hackers Infiltrate Vatican’s Computer System, Allegedly Stealing Information on September’s China-Vatican Negotiations and Gathering Intelligence on the Hong Kong Diocese and Pro-Democracy Movements

A cybersecurity company in the US discovered that Chinese hackers have been infiltrating the Vatican’s computer network in the past three months, allegedly stealing information related to the China-Vatican Negotiations in the coming September. Besides, the company said that hackers also infiltrated the computers of the Catholic diocese of Hong Kong, possibly stealing intelligence on its stance towards the Hong Kong pro-democracy movements and the relationship between the diocese and the Vatican.

Malware Found in Official Vatican Emails

Recorded Future, a private cybersecurity company based in Massachusetts, US, released a report on Wednesday (July 29), stating that Chinese hackers have been infiltrating the Vatican’s computer network, with intentions to steal relevant information ahead of China’s precarious negotiations with the Vatican. The Vatican and Beijing are expected to discuss the appointment of bishops, the status of the underground church, and other issues in September this year.

The report stated that the acts targeted at the Vatican were initiated by “RedDelta”, a hacker group supported by the Chinese government. This was believed to be the first instance where hackers working for China had been discovered, with their direct attack on the computer systems of the Vatican, the Catholic diocese of Hong Kong, and the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions coming to light.

Australian University Deleted a Tweet Quoting Human Rights Organisation’s Support for Hong Kong after Facing Backlash from Chinese Students

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia tweeted an article previously quoting a human rights organisation’s statement that the human rights situation in Hong Kong was rapidly deteriorating and called for international pressure on China. The post was deleted next day morning after an apparent backlash from Chinese students. A UNSW spokesperson explained deleting the tweet because the comment was ”being misconstrued as representative the university”.

On Friday, 31 July 2020, according to The Guardian’s report, the UNSW published an article on its website quoting Elaine Pearson, the Australian director of Human Rights Watch. Pearson said that she was approached by a member of the university’s media team to give her views on the present situation in Hong Kong and how the international community respond.

On the same day, UNSW’s official Twitter account quoted Pearson’s comment in the interview that now is a pivotal moment to pay attention to Hong Kong’s rapidly deteriorating situation, and that “‘now is the time’ for the international community to put pressure on China to wind back recent infringements on human rights in Hong Kong”.

The tweet drew strong dissent from UNSW Chinese students who demanded an apology from the university. They shared a post on WeChat calling for a boycott and unfollow the university’s official Twitter. Global Times, a Chinese state English newspaper, highly concerned on this incident and published a report to criticise that article as interference in Hong Kong affair. The report quoted a UNSW student from mainland China that he and other students were in talks with the university to demand an apology for the tweet.

Rumours of Sports Centre Turned COVID Testing Centre
Police Guarding Centre and Ticketing District Council Members

More than 10 police cars were found positioned in front of the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre as rumours has it that it will be turned into a "Huo Yan Laboratory" (or "Fire Eye" laboratory), a COVID testing lab. Police video-taped people who gathered at the scene, and demanded all media must have press passes and stay inside the designated area.

Members of the Central and Western District Council, including Lai-King Cheng, Ted Hui, Fergus Leung, Napo Wong, and Sam Yip gathered in front of the Sports Centre, and called for the fifth special meeting of their District Council. They also demanded the police to release information about the fate of the Sports Centre.

After giving 3 warnings, the police issued tickets to the council members for violating the public gathering ban. The tickets were then, however, destroyed by the council members.

A member of the Pro-Beijing Camp also appeared at the scene afterwards, shooting videos of the council members and said they are "messing up Hong Kong". Members of both camps left the scene after arguing for about 10 minutes.

A truck which wrote "BGI Group Huo Yan Laboratory Supplies for Hong Kong" was spotted nearby the Sport Centre last night loading off goods. Rumours of the Sports Centre being turned into a testing facility has been circulating since then, but nothing has been confirmed by the officials yet.

#China #KuaiZheyuan #LiaisonOffice #FakeID
Self-proclaimed senior government official at the Liaison Office Kuai Zheyuan accused of fraud worth 2 million, sentenced to 20 years in prison, criticises Hong Kong independence

Six years ago, it was revealed that a new newspaper titled Hong Kong Morning News was preparing to operate on Mainland Chinese funds but the plan eventually fell through. Its alleged secret sponsor Kuai Zheyuan, who had previously published political commentaries, disappeared shortly after. On 20 July, news emerged of Kuai's arrest in Mainland China in 2014. Sources show that he filed an appeal with High People’s Court of Guangdong Province in 2016 on grounds that included "service to the country with a special impact on the United Front" but was rejected.

Baidu's current information on Kuai describes him as a "professor" and adorns him with titles like "Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Development Strategy Research Centre" and "Executive Vice Chairperson of the International Institute for Strategic Studies". Of course, Baidu also provides a disclaimer that "anyone may edit the contents".

China Judgments Online announced the Second Hearing of Kuai Zhe's Crime of Contract Fraud and Fraud in August 2017. [The document] stated that Kuai, whose real name is Kuai Zhe, was born in 1968. He was involved in falsifying vehicle inspections in 2000. He also registered a private limited company using fraudulent capital and signed a collaborative deal with the Beijing Economic-Technological Investment & Development Corp. to swindle it out of CNY 6.8 million.

In 2010, Kuai told a certain Mr Yu, the Chairman of the board of directors for Grand Cosmos Holdings, that he was the Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Research Centre [sic] for the Hong Kong Liaison Office. He claimed to have close ties with leaders in the Supreme People's Court and the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China, which could allow Yu to win two lawsuits. Later, Kuai scammed CNY 2 million from Yu under the pretence of needing funds to facilitate relations.

On 29 April 2014, Kuai was arrested and placed under criminal detention. On 5 June of the same year, he was formally arrested. He was sentenced to 20 years of fixed-term imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of CNY 880,000 (approximately HK 970,000).

Afterwards, Kuai appealed to the High People's Court of Guangdong Province. In the "Penal Notice of Kuai Zhe" announced in November 2017, he requested that the court pronounce him not guilty on grounds of factual errors and procedural violations in the case. He also claimed to be serving the country with a special impact on the United Front. The court rejected his appeal.

Proclaiming himself to be the Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Development Strategy Research Centre on his Weibo account, Kuai had published several political commentaries before his arrest. One such exposition titled "The alliance of 'two independences' is a dead-end" was published in Ta Kung Pao in 2013. It criticised advocates of Hong Kong independence for being the "dregs of the Chinese nation, to be condemned by history" and "destined for failure".

Doxxed Hong Kong Reporters Suspect China Travel Agency Has Leaked Information

Since the anti-ELAB protests began, reporters' personal data have been put online many times in doxxing attempts. Recently, a website circulated a large number of "Apple Daily" employees' photos and information.

Those who were doxxed pointed out that their photos being disclosed were the one they used for the Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents. It is suspected that the information was leaked by the China Travel Agency that handled the documents.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data responded to inquiries, stating that it has no statutory authority to force extraterritorial organizations to provide website operator information, and the Office has not responded positively to whether it will investigate China Travel Agency.
