UK Defence Secretary to boost ability to handle space threat from Russia, China

//Britain will boost its ability to handle threats posed by Russia and China in space as part of a foreign, security and defence policy review being conducted by the UK government, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said

//“This week we have been reminded of the threat Russia poses to our national security with the provocative test of a weapon-like projectile from a satellite threatening the peaceful use of space”, Wallace wrote in The Sunday Telegraph newspaper, adding that China also posed a threat.

//Tensions between Britain and Russia have been high in recent weeks, as Britain has targeted Russians with new sanctions

//The Mail on Sunday newspaper reported that Johnson was also set to overhaul the United Kingdom’s treason laws to counter threats posed by China and Russia, with the step likely to see a new Treason Act, a new Espionage Act and a rewriting of the Official Secrets Act.

Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party Urges Government to Impose Restrictions on TikTok and Other Chinese Apps

Nikkei Asian Review reported that Japan's ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), will urge the government to impose restrictions on apps developed in China, such as TikTok (Douyin’s international version), to maintain close cooperation with the US on security affairs.

According to the report, LDP members discussed with experts on the matter on 28 July and their proposal could be ready next month. Ex-cabinet member Akira Amari, who was in the discussion, said that if the government and corporations did not have a clear policy on security issues pertaining to sensitive information, they might be excluded from research, talent exchange programs and other schemes in the US and Europe."

TikTok currently has more than 10 million users in Japan, most of which are youngsters. The LDP planned to call on the government to impose restrictions on apps developed in China, design security review standards to safeguard technical and information security, and refrain from publicising the patent applications of military technologies. Under current practice, the Japanese government publishes the information of a patent application approximately a year and a half after receiving the application, and the information can be viewed by people outside of Japan.

According to the report, the LDP worried that while US-China relations continued to deteriorate, if Japan did not have a clear policy on technical, information and intelligence security, it might lag behind its western partners. The LDP also hoped to enhance cooperation between Japan and the international intelligence alliance the Five Eyes (The Five Eyes comprises of the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada).

Delivering takeaway on a kick scooter is now a criminal act

Not sure if anyone still remembers this. Our boss was suddenly pushed, subdued and arrested on his way to deliver takeaway to customers. The food was spilt and wasted. Today our boss was put on trial in court. The charge was:

“Riding a kick scooter without the need or authorisation to do so.”

Upon hearing the charge, I believe the natural response from most people would be, “What? Riding a kick scooter is now a crime?”

Yes, it’s true. It was not merely a violation of some law. It was a criminal case.

Delivering takeaway on a kick scooter is now a criminal act

As soon as our boss received the penalty ticket, he consulted his lawyer. As there was no precedent related to this charge, his lawyer felt that it was hard to judge whether he could be acquitted. There were some arguments to make.

When our boss was put on trial, he didn’t hesitate to plead not guilty, and defended himself point after point in front of the judge. After listening to his arguments patiently, the judge still felt his justification was inadequate. It seemed likely that our boss would be convicted of riding a kick scooter illegally on the street. The maximum penalty of this charge could be serious (A fine of 500 HKD and imprisonment for 3 months).

Our boss would have no problem paying the fine of 500 HKD. But if he was sentenced to 3 months of imprisonment, our restaurant Gaji Rice would have faced foreclosure without the boss. After much deliberation, our boss chose to plead guilty. The judge had considered the situation our boss was facing and made a relatively lenient ruling in the end – a fine of 200 HKD only.

Our boss felt grateful for judge’s patience and felt he was a decent judge as he advised our boss to plead guilty. At the same time, our boss lamented that Hong Kong is now a place where delivering takeaway on a scooter had become a criminal act. Conversely, corrupted cops acting like urban management officers in mainland China can push anyone as they wish on the streets without being held accountable.

At this moment, we feel hopeless and frustrated. However, we will never give up on this place.

We will continue to hope for the better for this place.

Absurd things are happening in Hong Kong everyday.

But we are still hopeful that the remedy for Hong Kong will come one day.

We hope everyone could discover his/ her own living space with a smile.

Why the people of Hong Kong are worried about the collection of DNA by the government?

//Reuters reported that Beijing has sent a team from Mainland China to Hong Kong to carry out large-scale Covid-19 testing.

The Hong Kong government denied allegations that the DNA data harvested from these Covid-19 testings will be transferred to mainland China.

This is not the first time in which the Hong Kong government has given a false report of their actions. Here are some of the claims and false reports as follows:

1. Hong Kong is given the status of 'One Country, Two System', operating under high-level autonomy.

2. There was no suspicion of foul play regarding the cause of death.

3. The police did everything in accordance with the law.

4. The decision to delay the Legislation Council (LegCo) was not a political move.

5. The third-wave of Covid-19 in Hong Kong was not triggered by people who were exempted from compulsory quarantine.

Having been at the shorter end of the stick through all these lies and empty promises, how can anyone still believe the words of this government which defies all laws and systems? How can we trust that they will not send our (Hongkongers’) DNA data to mainland China?

It goes without a doubt that Hong Kong can manage independent Covid-19 tests, and we have enough hospital for quarantine. Why are we still taking such a political approach to ask China for help? Shouldn't their true intentions be made known to the public?//

HKgers Worry Over China's Acquisition of Hongkongers' DNA Data Through COVID19 Test

Pro-democracy district councilor #RoyTam demands the HKSAR Government to declare that Hongkongers' DNA Data will not be shared with any Chinese agency, and explained why HKgers are scared:

"…Unfortunately, Hong Kong already has an office of National Security Agency [in Causeway Bay], and DNA data does not actually need to be sent to mainland China. Will the government revise its statement to specify in more details that the data will not be disclosed to any official Chinese government agency or its branches?

In the final analysis, the people of Hong Kong have experienced hardships from the Hong Kong government and the Chinese government over the years, and have drawn the atitude that the Chinese government and Chinese-funded companies are untrustworthy. Who can blame this? Those in power should reflect, rather than blame the doubtful HongKongers."

2 Non-Covid-19 Patients Mistakenly Sent to Makeshift Covid-19 Treatment Center at Asia Expo

The makeshift COVID19 treatment center at Hong Kong Asia Expo began operating on the afternoon of August 2, but it has immediately made mistake.

A non-Covid-19 woman with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection was mistakenly identified as a confirmed patient and sent to the facility.

After the incident, the Department of Health on the next day again mistook another patient as a confirmed case. Dr. Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Communicable Diseases Branch, Center for Health Protection of the Department of Health, admitted that the staff had "missed the case". She apologized for the incident.

Thanks to our Motherland

(3 Aug) From ancient China's Four Great Inventions to the Four Great New Inventions in modern times, from combating financial "predators" to building a mobile cabin hospital in the Asia Expo for Hong Kong, perhaps free-ride is actually the greatest invention in China. If the U.S. is angered by China's theft of intellectual property rights again, perhaps Hongkongers should say "First Time?".

-- Voluntary Post: clarification on behalf of others --

In the past few days, I have seen the following photos in many group chats. Many have expressed their gratitude to the Chinese National Team for the establishment of the mobile cabin hospital in Hong Kong.

However, I would like to clarify on behalf of my friends who are involved in this project that this temporary hospital at the Asia Expo was "built by the staff of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority (HA), with their own efforts".

The National Team came to do the testing and assisted with the subsequent modifications, but was not involved in the "establishment" of the temporary hospital. They were probably not in Hong Kong during the establishment.

I know there are many things that the HA has not done as well as expected, and many of my friends have also said that there is much room for improvement in this temporary hospital. But where they have done well, we should encourage them, and we should not pass the successes and mistakes of their efforts to others.

Uyghurs for sale: Policy Brief Report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI)

More than 80,000 Uyghurs were transferred to work in factories across China, some sent directly from detention camps. China’s social re-engineering campaign targeting minority citizens hasn’t ceased, but rather, it grows expeditiously. Under conditions suggesting forced labour, Uyghurs are working in factories that supply at least 82 well-known global brands in technology, clothing, and automotive sectors; this includes Apple, BMW, Gap, Huawei, Nike, Samsung, Sony, and Volkswagen. The full list can be found in P.31-39.

Re-education camps
Re-education camps first aroused attention in 2017. Millions of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities have disappeared into a vast network of ‘re-education camps’ in Xinjiang. Inside the camps, detainees are subjected to political indoctrination, forced to renounce their religion and culture, and subjected to torture.

The new phase
Government officials now claim that the ‘trainees’ have ‘graduated’ to being forced to work in factories. Local governments and private brokers are paid a price per head by the Xinjiang provincial government to organise the labour assignments. This is literally human trafficking. It is nearly impossible for workers to refuse or escape. They are under constant surveillance, isolated, and subjected to arbitrary detention and threats against their family members.

Every purchase makes a difference
Foreign governments, businesses, and civil society groups should act now.
As a consumer, your purchase casts your vote. Be aware of the companies involved. Push brands to be more transparent about the make-up of their supply chains. Demand companies to make new public commitments, uphold current commitments, and to not use forced and coerced labour. Geographic barriers do not hinder you from stopping the trend.

Taiwan Celebrity Shows Support for Hong Kong in Pursuit of Freedom and Democracy

Taiwanese showbiz celebrity, Ili Cheng, nicknamed Jipai Mei, showed her support for Taiwan DPP's candidate for the mayor of Kaohsiung, Chen Chi-mai, on Aug 1.

During the event, Cheng said that she had supported Taiwan’s 2014 Sunflower Movement and because of that, many of her job opportunities were cancelled in the following two years.

When she went to Hong Kong to conduct a publicity campaign, she was even deported by the Hong Kong Immigration Department and was being treated as if she was a criminal.

She hopes that the Taiwanese will not forget the "fellow Hong Kong protesters" of the past year and not give up on Hong Kong. Wiping her tears, she rallied the Taiwanese people to continue to stand for what is right.

"I hope you never ever give up on Hong Kong. Hong Kong, Add Oil [fight on]!"

Famous Japanese Voice Actress retaliated Chinese fan’s accusation for “hurting Chinese feeling” on Twitter

(3 Aug) Japanese voice actress Yuu Asakawa, known for voicing the character Medusa (Rider) in the popular Japanese animation, Fate series, liked Tsai Ing-wen’s tweet about mourning the death of Taiwan’s ex-President Lee Teng-hui.

A Chinese fan tweeted her, criticizing her for liking “political sensitive” tweets and has “hurt his feeling as a Chinese”. Asakawa retaliated by retweeting his tweet and asked the netizen not to assume her ideology simply by a like button.

Netizens found out that Asakawa has liked numerous tweets from Dalai Lama, another “prohibited” figure in China.

Yuu Asakawa is one of the lead voice actresses in the highly anticipated movie “Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel”. She also voices numerous characters in the popular mobile game “Fate/Grand Order”.

Opinion Poll: Former PRC Premier Zhu Rongji and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen Are The Most Popular Among Hongkongers

On 4 August, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) published the popularity ranking of political leaders across the Straits.

Former premier of the People's Republic of China, Zhu Rongji was the top-ranked with a score of 61.6. Zhu was most remembered for saying that the Central government would be blamed forever if it ever destroyed Hong Kong.

Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen is the second most popular among Hongkongers, and her score was 57.6. Secretary-general of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jin-ping was ranked last in this study, with a score of 40.7.

Deputy CEO of HKPORI, Dr. Chung Kim-wah believes that the results reflect Hongkongers’ stance on the different political systems.

Chung was asked if he was worried about violating the National Security Law by conducting this survey. He replied that he will continue surveying the masses on relevant topics, just like how he has been doing it since 1997, until the day he gets accused.

“Give me a reason for stopping what I have always been doing."

He stated that carrying out studies about the opinion on Hong Kong or Taiwan independence is not action to advocate these approaches. Rather, the results were just a reflection of the views of the citizens on the situation, and for the country's leaders as reference.

Hong Kong Police to Arrest More Pro-democracy Activists

A number of pro-democracy
including but not limited to Joshua Wong, lawmakers Chu Hoi-dick and Wu Chi-wai, district councillor Lester Shum, Civil Human Rights Front vice-convenor Figo Chan and former student leader Sunny Cheung, have been told by the police they will be charged with unauthorised assembly for allegedly participating in a June 4 vigil in Victoria Park.

The annual large-scale commemorative event was banned this year by the authorities, who cited restrictions on public gatherings put in place to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Shum said the move shows the police can't even tolerate a totally peaceful gathering, and the charges are an attempt to harass and intimidate them.

"Upon charging us, the Department of Justice can demand or request the judge or courts to confiscate our passports or limit our freedom to leave Hong Kong," he said. "I think this is what the Beijing government wants."

#JoshuaWong: "I'm prosecuted by the Government Again"

Wong wrote the following
after the police notified numerous,pro-democracy activists including Wong of their impending arrest:

//Months after the Tiananmen Square vigil this year, I was just informed by Hong Kong Police that they will charge me with "knowingly taking part in an unauthorized assembly," with the date of my court appearance scheduled on 15 September.

Just 24 hours after I have left the court yesterday morning, I am now facing another charge by the government. Clearly, the regime plans to stage another crackdown on the city's activists by all means.

More worryingly, due to the lengthy legal process, I will probably be further barred from leaving Hong Kong to tell our truth to the world even after my current case over police headquarters siege ends. As our voices might not be heard soon, we hope the world can continue speaking up for the city's liberty and human rights.//

CCP’s hand has reached Singapore and US long ago

(24 Jul)No one will expect an international relation expert in Singapore is indeed a spy sent by CCP to spy on the US. The show hand of the espionage battle between China and US is only getting more and more intense. First, on researchers like Tang juan, who conceal their military studies background, the states can charge them with Visa fraud, which has a lower bar for prosecution. The merit of such charge is that no-one has to prove any state secret is stolen at all, and 10 years in jail will be given if found guilty. So people can make an example of it, so to scare the Chinese researchers.

The details of the espionage case was released today but the spy had been arrested in Nov 2019. It shows that the intelligence department has already begun tightening the net, and is no longer afraid of alerting the enemy.

Defendant Yao Jun Wei admitted to breaching the Foreign Agents registration act, section 951. This section was used against Cuba, and is then expanded to all agents who threaten the US homeland security. Combining with the Foreign agent registration act, it is being put into full use. As long as the agents are not registered and are acting in substance in their spy role, they commit a crime. In this sense, all those Chinese enterprises who expand their businesses in the US, will easily be affected under this law. Who will disclose that they are indeed working for the CCP? TikTok wishes to sell the business in a rush, and swaps all the Chinese management personnels. This is simply because they, too, fear this law.

Yao Jun Wei expanded his business in the US for the CCP, and runs a fake consultancy company, like those civilian think tanks. Intelligence, that is not publicised, is the most difficult to obtain, and is highly restricted to those in the authority. According to those mole cases disclosed by the Department of State, most were tempted with woman or money. Mostly those in financial difficulty were reached. Yet, when the Trump government arrested these moles high profile, the public servants became more careful and no longer accept gifts easily. This in turn, increases the difficulty for CCP to steal intelligence. Yao Jun Wei’s case demonstrates CCP’s move adapt to such changes.

Yao Jun Wei used Linkedin to “remodify” action of espionage into a legal business. He sent out recruitment ads en masse, and recruited target to write consultancy reports of different subjects. He lied that these reports are for research of Asian clients, and such action will be safe. Each report is priced from USD 1000 to 2000, and this scam is targeted at public servants who want quick money. The court released three examples, in which the CCP obtained three insider news from such operation, including Japan purchasing F35A, the influence of retreat of US army in Afghanistan on China and the confidential background of a cabinet official.
