Police Witness Gives Contradictory Testimony, Civilian Acquuttee of Assaulting the Police

On China's national day (1 October) in 2019, in different districts in Hong Kong police clashesd with civilians and arrested many. A 29-year-old clerk was charged with assaulting the police by attacking the back of a police officer. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

After the hearings, magistrate, Stephanie Tsui May-har, verdicted on 22 July and stated that the evidence provided by a witness who was also a police officer proved to be a contradiction.

Even though the defendant was in the middle of the road during the police dispersal operation, the prosecution couldn't adduce evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. Ultimately, the defendant was acquitted of this charge.

Poly U student who was tried for possession of offensive weapons said he was tortured by police.

On the evening of September 21 last year, more than 100 citizens surrounded the Mong Kok Police Station. A PolyU student was accused of possession of lighter fuel, hammers, and other items. He denied the possession of offensive weapons in public places charge and alleged that he was tortured by police officers.

The case was resumed today (23rd). The police officer who arrested the defendant that night, Liu Zhenliang, confessed that when the defendant was escorted back to the police station, two police officers pressed the defendant's back hard to protect the defendant from being hit by debris. Liu also said that during the 11-minute period when the defendant was searched and arrested alone in the police station room, he did not pay attention to the defendant's appearance or whether he was injured because he was focused entirely on the search.

Student to apply for remarking and rechecking history paper after government cancelled exam question

Watch video: https://bit.ly/3jFoDjN

As the coronavirus outbreak continues, the results of the HKDSE, a public exam mainly for university admission for local students, were released online.

Earlier the Hong Kong government cancelled an exam question after China's state media and pro-Beijing voices condemned a conditional, open question that mentioned Japan as inappropriate.

A student surnamed Chow suggested he was unsatisfied with his history exam result due to the cancelled exam question. After getting his results, Chow called his history teacher and apologized. He pointed out that he spent a lot of time and effort on this subject, and he wrote his essay arguing that Japan has done "more harm than good” in 1940s-China. He stressed that he will apply for remarking and rechecking because the cancellation disrepected students and made the exam incomplete.

New Zealand speaks out for human rights in China

In a speech to the Chinese business community in New Zealand, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern speaks out against the treatment of Uighur Muslims in China, a controversial Hong Kong security law, and Taiwan's participation in the World Health Organization (WHO).

Ardern has been urged by Human Rights Watch to condemn China's "re-education camps" as about two million Muslims have been indefinitely detained in China's northwest Xinjiang region. And now she raises the issue up again to give China a warning that “the world is watching and do not try to conceal that”.

In spite of the fact that many reports and eyewitness accounts have revealed that China has been persecuting the Uighurs in Xinjiang and reducing their population by forced sterilisation, China’s ambassador Liu Xiaoming, in a BBC interview, argued that the Xinjiang concentration camps shown in drone footage were "fake", he also stated that there is no general policy of forced sterilisation in Xinjiang.

Chinese government's fabricated stories have been disproved by facts, so who are they trying to deceive?

Earlier this month, Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters announces that New Zealand's relationship with Hong Kong would be reviewed after China passed a security law that allows for extradition to mainland China.

Hong Kong's new national security law opens the door for prosecution of both Hong Kong people and foreigners for crimes such as subversion of the government, or harming China.

Given the new law in Hong Kong also has a "direct impact" on New Zealanders, New Zealand government's reaction should not be misconstrued as interfering with Hong Kong's affairs.

Since the promulgation of Hong Kong's national security law, more and more countries have started to reconsider the relationship, including that of trading, with Hong Kong. As a result, the economy of Hong Kong has been deteriorating rapidly and this has a direct impact on the economy and reputation of China. Thus, isn't it a smart move for the Chinese government to moderate its stance on social and national security in order not to cause public outrage?

Do you know what happened in Hong Kong on July 26, 2019?

The first ”fly with you” rally took place at the Hong Kong International Airport on 26 July, 2019 in protest of the authorities' plan to allow extradition to China.

Workers from the aviation industry and many civilians distributed posters in the arrival hall and explained to tourists Hongkongers' "five demands" in the anti-ELAB movement. Some participants used their bodies to imitate the Lennon Wall.

Back then, the airport was filled with tourists and businesses went on at the terminal.

Later on, the government obtained an interim injunction from the court, banning enty to the airport except having a boarding pass. Since then, no one can go see their friends and family off at the airport.

On the contrary, the government refused to close the border in face of the coronavirus outbreak. As the pandemic is hitting, the once bustling airport has become a barren island.

Localists Earn 13% increase in support in just one year, more than 40% youth involved

The pro-democracy primaries were held on July 11 and 12, 2020 and 610,000 people voted, among which many localist candidates received a large amount of votes. The Communication and Public Opinion Survey Center of the Chinese University conducted a telephone interview with 1,574 citizens in June.

The survey results showed that the number of citizens supporting the localist faction continued to increase, from 6.9% before the June 9th march last year to 19.8% in June this year.

Divided by age group, in the survey conducted at the end of May and early June last year, only 17.9% of the 15-29 year olds considered themselves supporters of the Localists. By June 2020, the proportion of young people who supported the faction had risen to 43.6% while only 27.7% supported the pan-democrats; middle-aged citizens between the age of 30 and 49 who considered themselves supporters of the faction increased from 5% to 24.9%, and support for the pan-democrats dropped from 30.7% to 27.8%.

Dr. Francis Lee, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, believes that the survey reflects that support for the Localists has truly become "mainstream" among young people, and is no longer unique to the cohort.

Pro-democracy District Councillor Lester Shum Giving Up U.S. Citizenship to Run for Legislative Election

Obn 24 July afternoon, Lester Shum, a pro-democracy district councillor of Tsuen Wan and former deputy Secretary-General of Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) enrolled to rin for the “super seat" in the Legistive Council (LegCo). The seat, which returns a district councillor to the LegCo, belongs to the functional constituency (FC).

Lester Shum said that he will not sign the confirmation letter and authoritors should think of the consequences of them disqualifying election candidates.

He pointed out that, if disqualification is to take place, this not only concens the candidate, but it is also an act trying to eliminate Hongkongers’ voice.

Lester Shum was one of the most voted candidates the pro-democracy primary election. While he did not get disqualified in the district council election last year, his disqualification, if to take place, would reflect that the disqualification has nothing to do with the Basic Law nor the confirmation letter candidates were asked to sign.

Lester Shum mentioned that the pro-Beijing camp suggested postponing the election probably because of intensifying tensions between the U.S. and China, but they used the outbreak as an excuse.

He said the process of renouncing his U.S. citizenship would be completed next Wednesday and Hong Kong's Immigration Department has already approved his HKSAR passport.

Shum was accompanied by another Yuen Long district councillor Wong Pak-yu to submit his application. Shum reiterated that
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) besieged by the world is ”breaking the situation”. The world prepares corresponding measures to what Beijing has done.

Authorities Alleged Political Retaliation on Pro-democracy District Councilor

Kwok Chi-Chung, a
pro-democracy district councilor of the Eastern District, shared a post in his Facebook citing the message from the government's Eastern District Office. According to the authorities, if a councilor office has been used for the strike referendum and the pro-democracy primary election, the Home Affairs Department won't process its operating expenses for a month, including rental, staff salary, the bills for water, electricity, internet and internet access, etc.

Kwok criticized the decision, calling it ridiculous. He believed that organizing the strike referendum and the primary election could let civilians in different districts express their opinions as a result of influencing the welfare of people in this district. That was entirely in accord with the responsibility of the district council. Kwok expressed strong discontent that the authorites had bundled the expense of election and non-election days and pointed out that such unreasonable deduction of operating expenses by the authority constitutes administrative suppression.

Hong Kong activist's safety concern after national security law passed

Beijing's implementation of a new national security law in Hong Kong has given the Communist Party even tighter control over the region that is meant to enjoy "a high degree of autonomy".

Since the introduction of the national security law, Hong Kong’s activists have been under increasing surveillance. Prominent Hong Kong rights activist Joshua Wong believes that he has been followed by some strangers and he could barely secure his personal safety after the new law was passed.

Although Beijing insists that the only function of the law is to maintain law and order, many fear that the new law would undermine residents' rights granted by the Hong Kong Basic Law.

Hong Kong's autonomy has been changed as the national security law could affect residents from different aspects. For example, circulating publications about sensitive political topics may amount to a crime. In fact, a number of books that are politically incorrect (and now illegal) have been removed from the collection of Hong Kong public libraries. Some say that this is how the Chinese government shocks Hong Kong people into silence. Thus, for the sake of protecting human rights, members of the international community shall reconsider their relations with the Hong Kong government and the Beijing government.

HK Government demands Taiwan officials to sign 'one China' acknowledgement for visa renewal

In Taiwan, Soo Tsing-tshiong, the premier of Executive Yuen, said that officers stationed in Hong Kong have been made to sign the ”One China”, acknowledging that Taiwan is a part of China.

Taiwan possesses its rights to maintain its dignity. While the Taiwanese government is willing to have retain interactions with Hong Kong, it should be based on mutual respect for each other, and likewise, it should be mutually beneficial.

Beijing made the promise of allowing Hong Kong to operate under the 'one country, two systems' framework after Hong Kong's handover. However, it is obvious that Beijing has turned back on its words.

Soo strongly urged Beijing to honour the promise given to Hong Kong, and for them to respect Hong Kong's autonomy.

Western media outlets have also reportes that officers from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong received notifications from the HKSAR government regarding their renewal of visas being revoked if they do not sign the ”One China” acknowledgement.

Based on the news report, the agreement is a 4-page document, which requires stationed staff to agree that they will honour "One China” in principle, the Basic Law and the Hong Kong Law, and that they will not interfere with any internal affairs of Hong Kong, or display any behaviour and actions damaging to the prosperity of Hong Kong, or embarrassing Hong Kong government.

Chinese version of Paper Mario

Editor’s note: Above game news reports: Nowadays, the game language translators in PRC are prohibited by CCP from mentioning relevant words about “Human Right” or “Freedom etc.. As a result, the game in Chinese version can only reflect those banned words in another way, I.e. “Mario needs a tidy appearance, Mario needs a calm life”; instead of correctly translating the actual meaning of “Human Right”, “Freedom” etc.

This phenomenon simply reflects a situation that the freedom of speech/press and Human Right are extremely poor in PRC. CPP’s prohibition of such translation is one of the ways to control mindset of its people and manipulate the freedom of academic/acquisition of knowledge in the jurisdiction.

“The Marvelous Snail”, are you playing games which censor your speech?

Editor’s note: This game was developed by a Chinese company Qcplay Limited and published by LTGames Global, a Hong Kong company. LTGames is a sub-company of another Chinese company G-bits Network Technology (Xiamen) Co. Ltd. So the so-called “Hong Kong company” is just a camouflage. Then on its official site we can see the game "不思議迷宮" listed, which was developed by the same team who developed "The Marvelous Snail".
