Police Enforces Group Gathering Restriction on Group of Strangers

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the 7.21 Yuen Long Attacks. Large amount of police was standby at YOMO mall next to Yuen Long MTR station. Some civilians complained that the police encircled them and narrowed down the cordoned area to make them into a group of 8 people. Subsequently, the police issued a penalty ticket of group gathering restriction (599G).

Growing hostility against journalist witnessed among riot police

On the one-year mark of the 7.21 Yuen Long Attack, police obstructed citizens from protesting with a heavy deployment, repeatedly sealing off areas and conducting stop-and-searches. Their attitude toward journalists has grown even worse than before: journalists are now ordered to remove masks in order to verify identities, have their belongings searched, their ID card information recorded, and their faces recorded on police video cameras.

Growing hostility against journalist witnessed among riot police

A Citizen News journalist was stopped twice within 10 minutes by two separate groups of riot police, and was even questioned if the news organization was real. Journalists from smaller platforms as well as student journalists were treated as if they were not journalists at all. Nearly 20 journalists from universities or internet platforms were even ticketed for violating the gathering ban.

During searches, police also demanded journalists to stop recording on the pretext of privacy. They have demanded this in other protests before, but much more frequently today.

Police Officers Target Volunteer First Aiders on 721 Night

A first-aider was fined by the police, on the grounds of violating the gathering restrictions, after he escorted a civilian who felt unwell to an ambulance at Fung Yau Street North.

Police officers at the scene said in an extremely sarcastic manner that they were specifically targeting volunteer first-aiders. They also comment that the volunteer first aiders at the scene were ”fake first-aiders”, and that they were of no help to the civilians present.

Based on observation, it seems like the police officers at the scene were very concerned as to whether the journalists and first-aiders at the scene were 'real' or not.

Peace in the Midst of Chaos

A year has passed since the 721 attack, where white-clad triad members, allegedly colluding with the Hong Kong Police Force, attacked civilians and passersby. While it has already been a year, there has been no resolution to this incident. Justice has not been served.

A piece of paper with the words, "May everyone stay safe in the midst of the chaos. See you at the bottom of the 'pot' (a term used by Hongkongers for the Legislative Council's protest point)" was found stuck to the parapets of an overpass at YOHO Mall.

There is still a glimmer of hope in the midst of this chaos and darkness.

A man taped an anti-police poster at police back jailed for three weeks for assaulting a police officer;
Hong Kong court said light punishment could make police difficult to enforce the law in the future
.

(15 Jul) On the Christmas Eve of last year, netizens initiated a “Shopping with you” rally at Harbour City in Hong Kong. A 25-years old real estate agent put a poster at the back of a plainclothes police and he was charged with assaulting police officers. The defendant was convicted today (15 July) at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts and sentenced to three weeks’ imprisonment. The magistrate stated the defendant touched others with a hostile attitude which caused battery assault. The magistrate also criticized the behaviour of the defendant silliness like tricks and challenged why he didn’t put a poster on himself first. The magistrate continued to criticize his behaviour was extremely humiliating to police and emphasize that a slap on the wrist kind of punishment makes it difficult for police to enforce the law and orders in the future. The 25-year old defendant pleaded not guilty to attack police officer A outside the shop (no. 24177, 2/F) in Harbour city on 24 December last year.

//Magistrate Chan didn’t believe the defendant statement that he didn’t know that man was the police and convicted the defendant of assaulting of a police officer.

//Magistrate Chan thought the police might “remember wrongly” and stated that was a minor mistake which couldn’t cause any impact to the case. Therefore, she accepted the police evidence.

//Magistrate Chan said even the police dressed in black and wore black mask and people around were not police; however, age, sturdy body and uncompromising attitude of the police and his teammates were incompatible with people on the spot.

//Magistrate Chan stated the defendant had a slap on the back of the police for no reason and without any provocation and police felt pain because of his action. It was lucky that the police didn’t get hurt.

//The number of days he is in custody was more than terms of imprisonment.

Feature for Personalising Apparel Disabled from NBA Official Online Store following Controversy on Restricting “FreeHongKong” as Text Option

NBA Spokesperson: There Were Attempts to Print Hateful Messages

Many NBA players have been showing their support for the recent movements against systemic racial discrimination in the US, and the National Basketball Players Association has reached an agreement with the NBA to allow slogans supporting racial equality to be printed on the back of jerseys.  However, it was discovered last Monday that the NBA official online store had restricted apparel customisations that included the text “FreeHongKong”.

The website then briefly reopened orders for personalised apparel with “FreeHongKong” and explained that there was a technical problem previously.  But four days later, the customisation feature was completely removed from the website.

An NBA spokesperson confirmed to Fox News that the apparel customisation feature was temporarily removed from the website since there were “attempts to include violent, abusive and hateful messages on personalised NBA jerseys”, yet no explanation was offered on the inappropriate language in question.  Republican Senator Josh Hawley accused the NBA of carrying out censorship like China and not daring to offend Beijing.

Fox News pointed out that before the “FreeHongKong” controversy, the personalised apparel feature had allowed customisations of all sorts of texts, even violent messages such as “Kill Cops”.

A Stand News reporter logged into the NBA website on Friday morning and found all personalised apparel had been taken off the shelf.  The only customisable item still available was the Los Angeles Lakers bear, but the text limit had been changed from 12 characters to 11, making it impossible to print the “FreeHongKong” slogan.  However, “FreeHK” was still a possible choice and the reporter was able to proceed smoothly to the shopping cart for payment.

Another official NBA online store operator, Fanatics, is also no longer offering personalised NBA apparel, but the website still offers personalised gear from NFL, MLB and other leagues.  Fans could still order apparel or gear with “FreeHongKong” text, but “Kill Cops” or other such hateful texts were not accepted.

Experts have opined that the incident has shown NBA’s double standards in allowing stance that pertains to equality movements in the US but hesitating to touch on topics sensitive to China.
