SpaceX, an American space technology and exploration company, recently launched a manned rocket. The live broadcast of the launch on China’s CCTV attracted some strange online comments from Chinese netizens, including, "what a glorious motherland!" Other netizens responded, "your motherland is the United States?"

Observers suspected CCTV's live online comments were all from robots. One commented "this kind of robots for comments and likes are very cheap, they are less expensive than manual labor. But the machine is not smart enough."

Hong Kong Journalist Association requests access to Registers Lists by all media

The Hong Kong Journalist Association has opposed the rule that only government-approved media is allowed to access the Provisional Registers and Omissions List. In an appeal letter to the Chief Executive, the Association expressed concerns that the discriminating system will limit the media's ability to monitor the election, and demanded the government to reconsider the policy.

The Provisional Registers and Omissions List reveals Hong Kong voters’ names and residential addresses in the public.

The public used to have access to the list, until the Junior Police Officers Association applied for a judicial review to restrict its accessibility in order to prevent doxxing of police officers. The court now ruled that only government-approved media is allowed access.

"Horses keep running faster, dances keep being performed beautifully." This will be Hong Kong's greatest tragedy!

Now that the Chinese government is pushing the Hong Kong National Security Law forward, the Communist Party has gone back to playing the same old tune. As the music of the strings swells and the drums beat harder, the chorus belts out the hackneyed eight-legged essay* on how "horses keep running faster, dances keep being performed beautifully". This is nausea-inducing and makes Hongkongers want to puke! Hongkongers are used to the Communist Party's devious tricks from war [World War II]. After the Handover, they experienced it first-hand, the multiple times that the Chinese government "reneged on their word" and the Communist Party's "appearance not as it truly is". These bitter experiences of being bullied and manipulated are burned into their memory, seeping into their hearts and minds. Maybe some believe that the older Hongkongers have been gently coaxed into indulging in an easy life, that they have been effectively placated and numbed. However, the writer believes that this type of sweet-talking has long since been futile on the younger generation! Hong Kong's younger generation pretty much disdain the supposed mentality of "horses keep running faster, dances keep being performed beautifully". What Hong Kong's younger generation longs for is the approach of a new era. What they seek is to remodel Hong Kong's ideal future world!

The night prior (26 May 2020), the writer saw two photos on social media. They were eight youngsters standing side by side outside the entrance of the Sogo department store in Causeway Bay. Each person held a large placard. On one side, it said, "Desperate times call for desperate measures". On the other, "Better a broken jade than an intact tile."+ These youngsters are sending a clear message: Hong Kong's movement to resist adverse violent takeover is now in dire straits. Protesters must support one another. Do not forget our original goals. Spare no sacrifice. Fight to the end! The writer understands that the current political situation is hard and dangerous but respects the choices of our youngsters. He admires their courage and prays for their well-being. Best of luck!

Editor's Note:
* During the Ming and Qing dynasties, candidates of the imperial examinations had to write an eight-legged essay, which was known for its strict and rigid style. It is often said to have caused China's "cultural stagnation and economic backwardness" in the 19th century.
+ This is a Chinese idiom meaning death is better than dishonor.

I have been thinking over these couple of days that maybe I will not be able to write songs in Hong Kong anymore. No one would dare to hire me to compose or sing. My work will all be banned.

Or worse, Hong Kong may not have a music industry anymore. Maybe I will get arrested.

I know everyone is very confused about the future recently.

But, then again…

If I can’t create in Hong Kong, I can always go back to Canada.

If I can’t use my name Pong Nan, I can always use a pseudonym.

If I can’t perform in Hong Kong, I can always perform online. Or I can perform in Taiwan, you all can fly over to watch.

If they want to arrest me, let them be.

What are Hongkongers best known for? Resilience. We can always create our own future and rise from the ashes.

I had an interview today. They asked me if I will go back to Canada. I said, if one day I don’t feel secure anymore, I will. Otherwise, I would like to stay in Hong Kong and stand with Hongkongers, because Hongkongers can go through anything.

So, really, there’s nothing to be scared of, and you can’t live in fear forever. If you have the time to worry, why not channel all of that into doing something more?

Our Financial Stalingrad against China

Editor’s Note: This is the first battle of Financial war by fellows in the financial sector.

We are a group of Hong Kong citizens concerned with the financial well-being of our city. When CUHK and PolyU were under siege last November, we launched a precision strike on Megvii Technology, a CCP-controled technology giant. We now declare that we have successfully strangled Megvii’s IPO plan to death, incurring them a loss of US$500 million.

As a Made in China 2025 frontrunner, Megvii is culpable for mass surveillance and suppression of Uighurs in Xinjiang. Not deterred by existing US sanctions, Megvii played dirty tricks in order to get listed in Hong Kong. This has alarmed much of Central and caught the attention of the US Treasury.

It is most delightful to watch one fall in the last mile. At the eve of Megvii’s hearing, we had voiced our concerns of it violating the listing regulations of HKEX as one. Tens of thousands of complaint later, we are relieved by the abortion of Megvii’s IPO, in no small part due to your wise decisions.

With neither chips nor dollars, Megvii has been effectively contained, a unicorn stranded in the humanitarian wasteland of Xinjiang.

We are also relieved to see that Sensetime, another Made in China 2025 candidate, has immediately suspended its IPO plan for Hong Kong, incurring a loss of US$750 million. We learnt that many Xinjiang- or Big Tech-related CCP firms are now having second thoughts about a Hong Kong listing.

However, such relieves are only temporary. As you and your esteemed colleagues has long realized, the maintenance of Hong Kong’s financial salient is a constant battle.

From time immemorial, Hong Kong has been the sole USD lifeline for the People’s Republic of China. If Beijing is set to destroy Hong Kong, we will destroy all of China, and we will know where the real stake lies. Now in the shadow of the National Security Law, the US is actively considering imposing financial sanctions on China. If China continues to free-ride on Hong Kong’s USD access, I fear we cannot but contemplate sanctions on HKEX, something no sane person wants to see.

To Beijing: You can either have the Law or an international financial centre. You cannot have your cake and eat it. Nothing is simpler than this.

Our words to China Concepts Stocks: Hong Kong is not your backyard. Nor is Hong Kong your USD ATM. What we do to Megvii, we are ready to do it to you. You have been warned.

In trust of your judgement,

Hong Kong Protestors

Hongkongers abandon TVB, RTHK's Channel 32 popularity surges 22 fold

Hongkongers abandon TVB, RTHK's Channel 32 popularity surges 22 fold

Editors Note:
TVB, a commercial media corporation founded in 1967, is a traditional local-born television channel, which was popular & well-known by Hongkongers of every walk of life, representing the Hong Kong TV culture, over the decades. However, its management and administration became seriously intertwined with the CCP in recent years, they fabricated news and produced dramas that are pro-CCP and pro-Government, losing its Hong Kong identity and the fundamental truth-finding spirit of journalism.

In the contrary, RTHK is one of the departments under the HKSAR Government, its producers and management stands firm on justice's and Hongkonger's side, maintaining its conscience, professionalism and truthful reporting which educates the public without fear of suppression by the HKSAR Government and the CCP.

Surging popularity of RTHK indirectly reflects that more and more HongKongers are aware of the brutal CCP regime and its tyranny, endangering Hong Kong’s freedom, justice and way of life.

Battle against tyranny: High Court judge Patrick Li barred from Anti-ELAB related hearings after signing Anti-Extradition petition

(28 May) On the eve of the 9 June demonstrations last year, High Court judge Patrick Li, who presides over the Court of First Instance, signed a joint press statement alongside more than three thousand alumni from the University of Hong Kong entitled, "We oppose deceitful policies, withdraw the Extradition Bill." The Judiciary later acknowledged that a judge was involved in the petition. Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma discussed the matter with the said judge, reminding him to refrain from letting similar issues to occur in the future. Today [28 May], Sing Tao Daily quoted the Judiciary that based on the Guide to Judicial Conduct, Li was to avoid handling cases that related to the petition's subject matter to prevent "apparent bias" from arising. This means he is barred from handling cases on Anti-ELAB [Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill].

According to the report, the Judiciary responded by quoting paragraphs 46 and 47 of the Guide to Judicial Conduct: "In practice, questions of disqualification are most likely to arise in relation to suggestions of the apparent bias", and "The apparent bias test may be stated as follows: A particular judge is disqualified from sitting if the circumstances are such as would lead a reasonable, fair-minded and well-informed observer to conclude that there is a real possibility that the judge would be biased." The above principles apply to scheduling cases at all levels of court. The Judiciary decided that when assigning cases for the Court of First Instance judge Patrick Li, he would not sit in cases related to the joint statement to avoid apparent bias.

On 1 Oct last year, Li handled the case of local actor Gregory Wong concerning the 1 July Legislative Council incident. Wong was detained by the police for approximately 36 hours. Li granted a writ of habeas corpus after trial and Wong was released at 7:50 pm on the same day.

Last month, District Judge Kwok Wai-kin's handling of the Lennon Wall attack case in Tseung Kwan O provoked controversy over his verdict where he praised the defendant's "noble virtue". Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma subsequently issued a statement that inappropriate or unnecessary expressions of political opinions by judges and judicial officers could harm their impartiality and credibility. He determined that Kwok should not sit in any cases surrounding such political issues for the time being. Currently, two judges in charge of criminal cases - Patrick Li and Kwok Wai-kin - are barred from hearings that involve Anti-ELAB due to personal conduct or remarks made in trial.

This is China - Lee Yee

Lee Yee, a veteran journalist and commentator on politics in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, delves into the issue of a prevalent Chinese sentiment towards foreigners - one of mistrust and suspicion. With facts distorted or concealed by government propaganda and information censorship, a vast majority of Chinese citizens are often misguided and misinformed. This has led to an enslavement of the mind from which few are able to escape.
