DC member Chiang Man-ching condemns EDB’s political interference in HKDSE

Secretary for Education Yeung Yun-hung criticised the HKDSE history exam question about the second Sino-Japanese war for being hurtful to Chinese people and misleading earlier. He asked the HKEAA to cancel the question. Northern District DC member and Chinese tutor Chiang Man-ching knelt outside of HKEAA today, he had also been collecting signatures to stop the HKEAA from cancelling the question and condemn the EBD for interfering. Chiang pointed out that candidates this year already experienced the anti-ELAB movement and COVID-19, and they had to deal with EDB’s political interference after the exam. He described the EDA as “fell into enemy hands”, and the HKEAA was the “last line of defence”. He urged the HKEAA Secretary General So Kwok-sang to stand strong.

So was not present, and the petition letter was received by a representative of the HKEAA.

Government Blames Liberal Studies for Generating Different Opinions in HK

In an interview with China-funded, pro-Beijing newspaper Ta Kung Pao, Carrie Lam drew an analogy of education in Hong Kong to “a doorless chicken coop without supervision".

Responding to the criticism launched by the Chinese Communist Party media and Beijing loyalists on Hong Kong public exam for "not being patriotic", Lam reiterated that the issues raised by Beijing would be dealt with as the future of Liberal Studies would be announced this year.

Conjoining Beijing, Lam blamed subjects like Liberal Studies for having been "infiltrated" and that "some people intentionally disseminated false and biased information in schools". Lam concluded "stringent control is required."

Since Beijing's open attack of Hong Kong's legislature and education system, the local population are worried that China's "Cultural Revolution" tactics will be applied in Hong Kong.

Some protesters bought the Apple Daily front page advertisement for an artwork showing the Chinese characters of “freedom” (自由) turned sideways, imitating a prison. The caption was, “Freedom has become a crime. No turning back.”

The creator encouraged netizens to share their own work or opinions on social media with the hashtag #dontjailfreedomhk.

The restructuring of the education system is a whole year’s worth of murderous script

This is an important piece. Please read and share.

Looking at the news chronology, you’ll find that the removal of the controversial history exam question is just an appetizer. What the government wants to do is to wipe out this generation.

12 Jun 2019 - Secondary school teacher Mr. Yeung was shot in Admiralty. Pro-Beijing newspapers and camps condemned him as a “rioter-teacher”.

Jul 2019 – Pro-Beijing media bombarded the private remarks of the assistant principal of the HKCCCU Logos Academy, claiming that “yellow teachers are poisoning kids".

Aug 2019 onwards – Teachers are targeted and encouraged to blow the whistle on their coworkers. Pro-Beijing media began to attack Liberal Studies in the Hong Kong Senior Secondary Curriculum.

//pro-Beijing media emphasized on the "severe infiltration of yellow teachers", and that the education system must be restructured.

//The freedom of thought of this generation’s students cannot be removed. The only way to suppress them with weapons, beat them up and arrest them, and the cycle continues.

//The government gave up on this generation. Overthrow the system, and the next generation could be brainwashed from the beginning.

//Those who soberly fight back are bound to be driven to extinction. In this battle, there will be no ceasefire until every last Yellow Ribbon either surrendered or died.

Carrie Lam declares to lessen border control, yet tightens education censorship

In an interview with China-funded newspaper, Ta Kung Pao, Chief Executive Carrie Lam proclaimed that Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao have aligned to concurrently lessen border control measures, exempting more people to commute through borders of these three cities without undergoing mandatory quarantine amid the coronavirus pandemic. Prescribed requirements for such exemption may include a dedicated cause and medical surveillance, a requirement similar to the current practice of cross-boundary drivers. Lam hoped for an agreement to be reached within this month.

As for the arrangement for cross-border students to enter the city for studies, Lam said these students are scattered across multiple locations, so the issue would be dealt with when all borders are about to resume normal operations.

Carrie Lam administration scorning the elected councils will be not be forgotten by Hong Kong citizens

(12 May) Hong Kong Chief Executive (CE) Carrie Lam, won the CE election with the Election Committee members only represent around 0.03 percent of the population, was interviewed by Takunpao, a Chinese state-owned and controlled media, and accused the newly elected district councils of having no contribution after being in office term for 6 months, and supported the government officials to dismiss or leave the meetings to boycott the councils. Coincidentally, just one day before this article was published, Casper Tsui Ying Wai, the newly appointed leader or the Home Affairs Bureau, said “The District council is a playground”, and as long as everybody plays by the rule, it will be great fun. The head of the administrative government, publicly disregarded the council, disrespect and challenged the citizen-empowered councillors. This is to pour scorn on the councils, insult the dignity of the councillors, and to eradicate the society’s effort in the success of fighting the virus.

//From January 2020 until today, the Central and Western District council along with other councillors, have discussed and had over 70 discussion papers. And among the discussions, many were about livelihood of the citizens,

//other district councils, under the lack of competence of the government in combatting virus, deployed power and resources, to procure medical supplies, such as face masks, hand sanitisers, bleach, etc.

//Hong Kong government suppressed the council by refusing to provide any venue and secretarial service, and upheld the power under District Councils Ordinance but the council organised meetings on discussion anti-pandemic measures.

//The success of the anti-pandamic measures, was attributed to the civil actions and contributions. She took all the pride of success, and obliviated her inaction

A Hongkonger’s Voice - Universal Masking

A youtube video posted on 12 May explains the importance of wearing masks to combat the COVID-19 epidemic. Despite having one of the highest population densities in the world, Hong Kong has had relatively few infectious cases because people learned the importance of wearing masks during SARS in 2003.

Professor Yuen Kwok-yung as a key researcher of the SARS coronavirus, stated that wearing masks would prevent the spread of disease, whether symptoms were present or not. "Those who are susceptible ... would protect themselves from getting infected." He stressed its importance in urban areas where social distancing can be challenging. "Even in less crowded places ... a surgical mask can help and remember that wearing a mask itself is a symbol of civility in Hong Kong. When you wear a mask, people think that you are very responsible, very conscientious."

Dr Fan Ning, former president of Medecins Sans Frontieres HK and current chairman of Health in Action said, "When I run out of surgical mask, I would wear cloth mask because it still protects against the ... transmission of diseases."

The template for the cloth HKMask created by Dr K. Kwong can be found at this website: http://diymask.site

Dr Kwong examined easily accessible materials that can be used as a filter in his double cloth cotton mask. Before choosing a filter, it is important to know the material's filtration efficiency and PD flow rate. The former specifies effectiveness in filtering out particles; the latter specifies breathability. Dr Kwong says 70% filtration efficiency is sufficient for general use.

Recommendations: Use a new filter every time. Make sure it fills up the mask so the air you breathe passes through the filter. The mask should cover your nose and mouth with the mask fitted snuggly. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after wearing the mask.

How Hongkongers fight coronavirus on their own

Given Carrie Lam and Her Government have again and again shown a high degree of incompetence, Hongkongers have trusted the puppets no more, especially in this #epidemic time.

Hong Kong citizens have organized their own #coronavirus countermeasures since January 2020, when the mysterious viral pneumonia was circulating in Wuhan. Hongkongers initiated to wear #facemasks when they went to public places, and they paid particular attention to personal hygiene. Meanwhile, Carrie Lam, Hong Kong's Chief Executive handpicked by Beijing, was staying in Switzerland without a sense of crisis.

Although more than 7,000 medical workers staged an unprecedented strike, Carrie Lam dragged her feet in closing the city’s borders, and never fully closed down the land border with Mainland China -- the most hazardous source of coronavirus.

Furthermore, Lam wavered on facemasks, and even ordered civil servants not to wear them. Meanwhile, public and private hospitals were facing shortage of personal protective equipment. The incompetent government also ignored the empty shelves in stores and shortage of crucial supplies such as rice, noodles, and toilet rolls.

In response, Hongkongers created their own websites to track local information of COVID-19, including the resources of protective equipment and track cases of COVID-19. They get used to looking up instant notification and critically analyzing information through anonymous channels in Telegram, which had been initially used to protect human rights activists from government repression.

For the shortage of facemasks, an “army of volunteers” spread among the intensely crowded and often decrepit tenement buildings to install and keep filled hand-sanitizer dispensers.

Realtime digital maps were not just confined to track police blockades and clashes, they were also used to keep track of outbreak locations and hand-sanitizer distribution points. Moreover, there were volunteers sanitizing subdivided flats with affordable UVC lights.

Lam’s government eventually responded, but it was always a step behind the people.

The Government coped with the epidemic in their way, for example, setting up quarantine centers in dense neighborhoods without public consultation, or even worse, against public opinions.

Hongkongers' self help was not in vain. In early February, the financial outlet Bloomberg ran an opinion piece that compared Hong Kong to a “failed state”. And yet there is no unchecked, devastating COVID-19 epidemic in Hong Kong. Hongkongers, on their own, beat back the original wave, and also beat back a second resurgence due to imported cases.

This success should be attributed to the self-disciplined Hongkongers, who seared with the memory of SARS in 2003 and evolved into a united group during the movement in 2019. Hongkongers act swiftly, collectively, and efficiently. Besides, thanks partly to its history of fighting epidemics, Hong Kong has some of the world’s most prominent experts in infectious diseases.

Now that life returns to normal in Hong Kong, it also means that Hongkongers have to return to the life of protesting: fighting for the release of pan-democracy protesters, and fighting against the bad popo and oppressive legislation such as the "Article 23 Enactment".

The road ahead is certainly challenging, #Hongkongers know that, but they will not yield.

Is the Chinese Bat Woman responsible for the origin of the novel coronavirus?

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19, Shi Zhengli, the virologist from Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), has been the subject of intense speculation over her work. She denied having any links to the coronavirus emerged in Wuhan at the end of 2019.

Shi worked for years of virus-hunting expeditions in bat caves around China, led to discoveries about SARS and other coronavirus strains in Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Shi and her colleague, Zhou Peng, both studied bats in a CSIRO facility as part of research funded by both the Australian and Chinese governments. The project found that 'bats are rich reservoirs for emerging viruses.' The two scientists jointly wrote a paper in January that said the new coronavirus probably originated from bats, just like SARS.

A spokesman for CSIRO confirmed bat research took place with international partners in Geelong, 'CSIRO undertakes all research in accordance with strict biosecurity and legislative requirements.'

Meanwhile, the Intelligence agencies from the 'Five Eyes' network of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK and the US are examining the work of the 2 scientists in WIV.

However, Shi Zhengli insists the COVID-19 virus did not escape from her “world-class lab”, stating that the genetic sequences of the new virus and samples from her previous work do not match.

Scientists believe the novel coronavirus is most likely spread to humans from animals, perhaps a bat, rather than an accident at the institute, and is even less likely to have been manufactured.

The exact source of the virus remains unknown, and China said it is conducting investigations into the matter.

The pandemic shows why Taiwan is a far better partner than the People’s Republic

//The communist government in Beijing has responded to the coronavirus pandemic with crackdowns, coverups and intimidation. The democratic government in Taipei has taken a starkly different approach, one based on pragmatism, science and generosity. The contrast between the two leads to the inescapable conclusion that Taiwan is a much better partner for the United States than the People’s Republic.

//Earlier this week, deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger delivered a speech in Mandarin to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the founding of what’s known in China as the May Fourth Movement, when student protests in cities around China in 1919 spawned a generation of scholars and activists who believed in promoting science and democracy above the closed system controlled by Chinese elites at the time.

//that spirit is alive and well in China, represented by the doctors and journalists who bucked the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) system to bring information about the emerging coronavirus threat to the world. That spirit is also alive and well in the Republic of China — also known as Taiwan.

//Taiwan has given a master class in how a democracy copes with an existential emergency, despite being ignored and mistreated at every stage. The Taiwanese government sent early warnings about the coronavirus to the World Health Organization in December, but the organization ignored them and later accused Taiwan of racism for complaining about its treatment.

//This week, China threatened to halt medical supply shipments to the Netherlands because Dutch officials changed the name of their representative office in Taiwan to “Netherlands Office Taipei,” as a recognition of Taiwan’s help. Meanwhile, China is taking advantage of the world’s distraction to increase its military intimidation of Taiwan.

//the Trump administration is now mildly upping its engagement with the Taiwanese government and pressing the WHO to allow Taiwan to attend (as an observer) the World Health Assembly being held virtually later this month.

//In March, President Trump signed the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act, which allows for more support and engagement.

//The pandemic has underscored that the People’s Republic of China is a deeply unreliable partner. It is time we acknowledged that there is an alternative Chinese model on offer. The values that Taiwan champions give it a huge advantage over Beijing. Those values can become an advantage for us as well, if we live up to them.

Lester Shum: A possible black hole for live streaming and documenting in Mong Kok – a repeat of 831.

(10 May) The Hong Kong police were already very familiar with Mong Kok’s ‘sachet bag strategy’(a strategy which allows them to make mass arrests), and it seemed like they stepped up their game tonight.
It seems that the police are targeting journalists more strategically so no one would be able to film what happened.

Within 10 - 15 minutes, the area around Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Shan Tung Street, Tung Choi Street and Fa Yuen Street were completely cordoned off by police and all those present were arrested, while a large number of journalists were stopped and "targeted".
After the police started their operation, apart from those who targeted citizens, it seems like there was also a group of police who purposefully “subdued” and “dispersed” the journalists: those who could be kicked away, pushed away and sprayed away were dispersed, and those who couldn’t be dispersed due to the large number of journalists were demanded to sit down and turn their live streaming off.
After being surrounded by the police, a number of journalists were demanded to retreat so far back that they couldn’t film the police’s actions at all.
Given the large number of police on the scene and the strategic targeting of journalists, there was a part of Mong Kok where no one knew what happened, and how arrestees were treated.

The reason why the 831 Prince Edward Station incident happened is because the the police kicked all journalists off the platform, which is not a difficult thing to do with their resources if they have the intention to do it. But like tonight, clearing out hundreds of journalists in several streets, I don’t believe that there was no premeditation or deployment.

Journalists being targeted and brutalised by police is nothing new. But what happened tonight appears to be a premeditated and deployed effort by the police to create a black hole for reporting and documenting, like in the 831 incident.

Police officer mocks visually impaired lawyer and demands her to take out artificial eye

In the video, Joy Luk, a visually impaired lawyer and a keen supporter of the pro-democracy movement, gave an account of her grievous experience when lodging a complaint about the police misconduct in a police station.

Not only did the police officer keep questioning the validity of her statement, the officer even went on to mock whether she was genuinely blind. In despair and feeling extremely humiliated, Luk had to take out her artificial eyes and display them on the table.

Hong Kong Public Broadcaster Suspends Political Satirical Show After Being Attacked by Police and Pro-Beijing Forces

Image from the show

Ng Chi-sum, one of the key members of Headliner as well as news commentator, spoke on public broadcaster RTHK's sudden decision of halting Headliner on May 22, 2020.

Ng believes the "suspension" of the Headliner would probably be a permanent one. He added that even the programme is allowed to return one day, it would only bear the same title but without the essence and spirit.

RTHK's Headliner is a popular news commentary programme which has been running on and off for 30 years in Hong Kong. Accompanied by satirical sketches, parody songs and derivative works, the show is known for its criticism, sharpness and humour toward social issues and problems. Outspoken of governance failure, the show has amassed many keen supporters in the local population.

During the Anti-extradition bill Movement in 2019, the show continues to speak out for the public and bring spotlight to police brutality and governance crisis.

Hong Kong police commissioner Chris Tang, various police-related organizations and Beijing loyalists had through different channels reprimanded the show for "distorting" the fact and the image of the police.

Watch the English-subtitled "Shock Report" in Headliner

Since the handover in 1997, the show had been attacked by Chinese officials, China-owned media and Beijing loyalists including former Chief Executive Tung Chee-Hwa. Although each time these attacks sparked concerns over the gradual erosion of the freedom of speech, the tension had never amassed to the cancellation of the entire show.

On 19 May 2020, RTHK issued an apology while announcing that the long-running Headliner would be suspended until further notice. Considering the removal of episodes which the police force claimed to be "inappropriate", this somehow indicates the source of pressure and the cause of the programme suspension.

After firing on the education system and exam authorities, the Hong Kong government is also increasing its contol over the media lanscape: As a public broadcaster, RTHK has been repeatedly challenged by the authorities, despite the station's popularity, good ratings and compliments for its impartiality during Hong Kong protests.

In addition to cutting RTHK funding, the government ordered RTHK's to vacate one of its buildings in Kowloon Tong. On top of Headliner, the Education Bureau also stopped RTHK from making Education Television Program, one role RTHK has been playing for decades.

On 19 May, the government ordered a full review of RTHK's programme production and editorial processes and called for any staff found to have committed "negligence or errors" to be disciplined.

15 More Charged with Rioting during #PolyU Siege

15 more citizens, including YouTuber Auman, were charged of riot and possession of arms or ammunition during the PolyU siege in November 2019. The case was heard in Eastern Magistrates' Courts on May 18.

Outside the court, the counsel who represented three of the defendants revealed that the police ordered the arrested to kneel in an outdoor carpark overnight. They suffered for 4 hours without food and water, time to use the bathroom and meeting their lawyers. If they talk, they will be insulted by the police using foul language. This process only ended because someone fainted.

Another counsel tried to file a complaint in court that the police used disproportionate violence against the defendant when subduing him. Yet, the magistrate stopped him and asked him to file it in the next hearing.

Since the prosecutor needed time to prepare documents, the hearing was adjourned to 20 Aug in West Kowloon Magistrates Courts.

“Awakening”

The following is an account of a university student in Hong Kong:

" I am a CUHK student and arrestee for the charge of rioting.

I felt sad to watch the judgement of the court to Edward Leung Tin-kei and 811 on the charge of riot a few days ago because I can sense that the day I'll be locked up is getting and I will probably spend 6 to 7 years in prison. A new idea was in my mind. Do Hongkongers need another awakening?

When you choose to rebel and fight against tyranny, it is not only the choice of politics but also consciousness. You need to abandon normal life. It’s so-called “yellow ribbon”. Even you may be a peaceful protestor or investor, you have to get ready and get used to being in and out of prison for the rest of your life.

Why? It is because totalitarianism can’t tolerate any other opinion. Suppression will be more severe, and the bottom line will be lowered further. Common sense won’t exist anymore. Hong Kong Indigenous members were called “separatists” a few years ago. All pro-democracy parties are called “separatist” now. A few years later, supporting “one country two systems” maybe a separatist action.

You can be arrested if you fight with words (attacking TVB), fight with capital (money laundering) or fight with posters (property damage). Don’t think that you are safe if you don’t come out to march. After article 23 is passed, you can be arrested by just sharing news on Instagram. In China, you may be detained in charge of treason for prison punishment 8-10 year if you get any complaints or you if are Christian.

In a society without freedom, if you choose to fight against totalitarianism, life planning, family life, and a simple and peaceful life are not for you anymore. Your daily life will be paying fines, getting beaten, locked up in prison, being threatened, kidnapped, getting house arrest and being unpersoned. Li Wangyang, Liu Xiaobo and Chen Guangcheng's lives will be yours.

Thus, don’t feel sorry that our comrades are in prison. Getting locked up is unavoidable in the process of fighting against tyranny. We will continue after getting out. Where can you find a revolution without any sacrifice?

We enjoy our rights, freedoms and fairness in court now like we took it for granted. However, behind the pearl of the orient is the sacrifice of many nameless heroes.

British feminists were arrested and sent to jail in 1910. The leader of the worker union in US fighting for an 8-hour workday was convicted to the death penalty in 1886. 500 thousand soldiers died in the civil war so that the black man may be free. “Winter on fire” was a good show right? 125 people died in Ukraine in 93 days.
