Leading filter nano-technology expert criticized the CUMasks with having major health concerns: the accumulation of copper particles inside the lungs and human organs is a ticking time bomb.

(8 May) There are doubts regarding the effectiveness of the government distributed reusable masks. The Innovation and Technology Bureau (ITB) and HKRITA attempted to provide further explanation on this but they could not relieve public concerns. A leading expert in nano-particles and mask filtration technologies discovered that the CuMask was not able to lock up the virus effectively because the “anti-bacteria virus-protection” copper particles are not evenly distributed within the filter. There is another concern that the tiny nano-copper particles can be inhaled into the lungs of the user. The masks are not breathable as the filters are too thick. The CUMasks fails to meet the EU EN14683 standard.

The ITB and HKRITA repeatedly emphasized that the copper filter in the CUMask copper is able to catch and kill bacteria and viruses. According to available information, there are six layers inside the CUMask. Four of these filters are made up of non-woven fabric materials. The last two layers contain copper. The outermost coppery layer is added with darken copper oxidized yarn. The third light brown color layer contains copper particles.

However, leading nanofiber multiple layers filter expert Professor Wallace Leung of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University questions the safety and effectiveness of the CUMask.

Concern 1: Uneven distribution of the copper participles making the copper filter layers not effective enough to catch, lock, and kill viruses.

Concern 2: The nano-copper particles can be easily inhaled into the lungs causing long term copper accumulation inside the body. There is also risk that the nano-copper particles that are not firmly adhered to the fabric can be detached from the filter layers after repeated rough washes, make them even easier to be inhaled.

Concern 3: The filters are too thick. The more they are washed, the more they become unbreathable. After 40 washes, the differential pressure rises to 5, failing USA ASTM standards.

Concern 4: The mask fails EU Safety standards and is not suitable for the elderly and the sick. The HK government claims that the CUMask has passed the ASTM standard but the CEO of HKRITA Edwin Keh referred to the EN14683 standard instead when answering questions from the media about the breathability of the masks. The differential pressure has to be lower than 4 in order to be compliant with EU requirements. The test results for CuMask is 4.4 as disclosed on their website. The mask is not safe for the elderly and those who suffer from long term respiratory diseases.

Editor’s note: EN14683 is an EU standard for testing bacterial filtration efficiency and differential pressure with ASTM F2100. Manufacturers who wish to market their medical face masks in both USA and Europe will need to perform the tests required by both standards and meet the different performance requirements listed in table 2. Here is explanation of how the harmonization of the two sets of standards.

Source: Ms X Fears that Her Safety Would Be Endangered

China-funded newspaper Wen Wui Po on May 13 claimed that Ms X, the gang-rape accuser, went to Taiwan 19 days after she made the report to the police. The newspaper furthered to describe the difference between the police investigative report and Ms X's account.

Afterwards, a source close to Ms X contacted the Stand News. The source said that Ms X left Hong Kong as she was worried about her safety and she did not trust that the police would conduct a proper investigation. Ms X did not "flee" Hong Kong, nor did she know that she has become a "wanted person", when the police commissioner Chris Tang made the claim on May 12.

Ms X through her laywers also stated that she was already not in Hong Kong when Commissioner Tang accused her of "misleading the police" in January.

HK$25.8 billion Funding for Police Force Passed in Legislative Council with Pro-Beijing Camp's Endorsement

The government's budget plan was passed in the Legislative Council on May 14. The bill had been criticized by the pro-democracy lawmakers as the relief funds for residents and businesses were bundled with the police funding, which has increased by 24.7 per cent compared to last year.

The bill was opposed by 23 pro-democracy lawmakers but was in the end passed with 42 votes from the pro-Beijing camp. Pro-democracy lawmaker Chan Pui-yin of the medical profession abstained from voting.

All 52 amendments proposed by the pro-democracy fraction were voted down. One of the main concerns was the police funding of HK$25.8 billion for expansion, weapons and supplies, making Hong Kong a city with the world's highest citizen-officer ratios.

In 2019-20, the police overtime pay and other allowances cost HK2.5 billion, exceeding 10 times the original estimate.

Petition to Stop China to build dam on the upstream Mekong River

(16 Apr) According to new research from American climatologists, China, where the headwaters of the Mekong spring forth from the Tibetan Plateau, was not experiencing the same hardship at all. Instead, Beijing's engineers appeared to have directly caused the record low water levels by limiting the river's flow. This has caused droughts in Southeast Asian Countries and therefore a petition is created for this issue. Currently more than 67000 signatures are received.

Carrie Lam: Education Policies Cannot Become Ungovernable, Liberal Studies Awaiting Review within This Year

(11 May) In a recent interview with a newspaper, Chief Executive Carrie Lam revealed that the government will announce the way forward for Liberal Studies (a subject added to Hong Kong’s curriculum 10 years ago) within this year. Lam declared that education policies must not become an unruly subject. If there is a problem, it must be resolved. She also criticised those who are intentionally spreading fallacies in school campuses. Apart from Liberal Studies, other subjects are likely “getting infiltrated” as well. Therefore, someone must act as “gate keepers” in this situation. On top of the Education Bureau, school-sponsoring bodies and school management teams have the responsibility to protect intellectually-immature students from believing those misconceptions.

Carrie Lam also said that violence has not completely subsided yet. Police continue to uncover multiple cases of illegal possession of explosives and firearms, which have huge effects on social stability. Some continued to discredit the police force, but their acts also affirm the effectiveness of law enforcement. She encouraged all law enforcement agencies not to be afraid of any smear campaigns and strictly enforce the law. Lam pointed out there are nonsensical criticisms on Mainland China and Hong Kong coming from foreign countries. This type of improper interventions did not match the expectations of a lawful society. She questioned why should third parties demand the government to release arrestees when there were clear legal and prosecutorial justifications. She continued that “opposing the meddling of external forces in Hong Kong” used to be the language of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but now it has become part of Hong Kong government’s as well.

83-year-old Li Yi: I don’t have long to live, but I believe Hong Kong young people have wisdom beyond imagination 6/6

▶️ Part 5

Time flies, Make the most of it

Lee Yee is now 83 years old, do you feel that there is not enough time?

"Not enough time? Yes, but now I think I'll just take it naturally. I used to think I'll write a memoir, but now I feel like, if I can do it, sure, but if I can’t, it's also fine. Too many things in life we can't control or calculate. I just do as much as I can. I'm not thinking about creating any impact to the world and the society. There probably aren't any impact anyway. Unlike you guys because you are still young.... Now I just try my best to do what I can and want to, to live through the last years of my life. Life is the sum of one's actions. My only wish is to die a good death, not to have intubation all over my body."

"Many things can't be predicted, you just can't. I believe in existentialism - One's existence is always responsible to oneself. Right now, I'll have to make the most of "now". The next moment, I'll make the most of it too when it comes. What will happen? I am not a fortune teller. I don't know. Personally I feel that Hong Kong people's awakening cannot be undone; Hong Kong people have identified themselves as Hongkongers and will not go back to become a Chinese. They won't get attached to China again. The younger generation influenced the older generation. I've known this for a long time. Young people are willing to sacrifice themselves for Hong Kong, now what can't we? How many more years do I have? How many more do they have? Aren’t they more important? They have to think for themselves. If they can do it, so can we. Hong Kong needs to be separated from China. I'm not saying independence, it's a bit strong. But this awareness, I don’t think it ’s possible to turn back, in fact it'll only get stronger."

"The localism is driven by the younger generation, how strange. You know what, there's no such thing before the transfer of sovereignty in 1997. The younger they are, the more they have this idea naturally. It is not taught to them, we didn't. You know what, now the kids in secondary schools are the most determined. You don’t have to ask them, they don’t argue about it, that ’s how I do. Re-unification or independence? They don’t even talk about it. They'll simply say "I ’m not Chinese, I ’m a Hongkonger. I've always been one and I'll always be one."

End

Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist: as a Hong Konger, there is no way to be happy

(09 May) A one-way plane ticket led Reuters' photographer, Tyrone Siu, back to Hong Kong at the end of May last year. He was originally stationed in Taiwan and planned to be in Hong Kong only to report on the annual candlelight vigil of the June 4th Tiananmen Square massacre. Instead, he stayed for almost a year and witnessed Hong Kong’s most chaotic days. He and the team at Reuters even won the Pulitzer Prize in the Breaking News Photography Award this year for their series on Hong Kong anti-extradition bill movement. He described his feeling of winning the prize as very complex. "As a journalist, it is a great honor to win the Pulitzer Prize. It may be what a lot of media workers aspire to achieve. But as a Hong Konger, being in the story, and knowing that many people have been injured in it, I can't say that I am happy about a movement that hurts us all.

Not only a mother of 7-year old, but also a frontliner

(10 May) Because of work in the past, I knew "D", who is the mother of a 7-year old.

"D" was a "peaceful" protester in the beginning. Until the beginning of July last year, she and her son was going back home from dinner, police tactical unit (PTU) rushed toward them. Her son said he wanted to stay and help the front line protesters. He said, "I am not scared, mum."

"D" couldn't help but cry at that moment and thought, "even a kid knows right from wrong; what should an adult wait for?"

Then came the 21 July and "D" felt she couldn't take it anymore. She became a frontline” protester. What happened on the 31 of Aug and 1 Oct was still vivid in her mind. "For the first time, I didn't know what I could do. I only know everyone can contribute something. I have been almost all different positions, such as frontline, supporter, parents, scout, FA, etc. As long as you are willing to take one more step."

She went out alone every time. I asked how her son responded. She said her son didn't let her go once for the siege of PolyU. "When I was in PolyU, I was afraid that I couldn't go home. He texted me via WhatsApp to ask me about the condition when I went out every time. He even kept some food for me to eat later." Her kid still felt worried even he knew why her mother went out. He always watched live when his mother was out.

As a mother, how could she not fear to be arrested or hurt? What to do if leaving the kid alone? "I have planned just in case something happens. I have a friend to help and look after my kid." I couldn't imagine how a mother could sacrifice and be determined. I felt heart-breaking to hear her story and respect the mother and the son deeply.

"I come out and protect the future for my son. If you have kids and you can't see their future, don't let yourself be regret one day that you haven't done anything. "she said firmly.

Our sister is not only a frontliner but also a mother. Even with a heavy burden, it doesn't mean to flinch. Because she can't lose her beloved son, she protests him regardless of personal safety

Wish all mother teammates be safe in this "Mother's Day". They come out to be the front line because they don't want the next generation to live under a dictatorship. Women and mothers are not soft and weak anymore in this movement. Because of love, they are determined to fight.

Beijing Loyalist Andrew Leung hand-picks Chan Kin-por as Head of Next Week's House Committee in Legislative Council

Image

LegCo president Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen of the pro-Beijing camp announced that, after consulting David Philip Pannick, Baron Pannick, QC and barrister Anthony Chan, he decided to invoke article 92 of the Rules of Procedure of the Legislative Council to appoint chairman of the Finance Committee legislator Chan Kin-por as the head of next Monday's (#May18) election as the House Committee chairman. No points of order will be accepted.

Leung claimed that he invoked article 92 only to stop the filibuster, as article 92 has often been referred to as the "sword of state", granting unlimited power to the president.

Chan gladly took up the post, claiming that "a legislative council that can't do legislative work is a big problem."

He also called for pro-democracy legislators to take their appeals to Leung should they find Leung's edict misjudged, despite his decision having been consulted by a Queen's Council.

Pro-democracy legislators censured the decision, citing that Beijing loyalist Starry Lee Wai-king claimed to have approached the democrats through legislator Martin Liao Cheung-kong on Wednesday (#May13), to discuss the procedure of the meeting despite it never happening, and that pro-Beijing camp had never consulted pro-democracy legislators regarding the legal advice. They believed that Leung appointed Chan only to carry out political missions from Beijing.

Moreover, they stated that the head of the House Committee should fall on the member with the greatest seniority per example when the vice chairman is relieved of duty, namely legislators James To Kun-sun and Leung Yiu-chung.

First Anti-ELAB Protester Sentenced to 4 Years in Jail After Pleading Guilty to Riot Charges

On 12 June 2019, citizens surrounded the Legislative Council building in Admiralty to stop the second reading of the extradition bill from resuming. It later turned into a conflict between the police and citizens. A 22-year-old lifeguard, surnamed Sin, pled guilty to his riot charges in the district court, making him the first of the protesters to do so. Judge Amanda Jane Woodcock sentenced him to 4 years in jail.

As of May 14, police has arrested at least 8,300 citizens since the city-wide pro-democracy movement started in June 2019. Among them, 1,600 arrestees have been prosecuted. Meanwhile, many condemned the police for conducting arbitrary mass arrest and abusing the detainees. For instance, police arrested 286 citizens outside Sogo Department Store after calling off the New Year's Day March on Jan 1, 2020, but prosecuted no one so far.

Actress Lee Yee-man and Barrister Alan Leong volunteer to run "Yellow shop": "Supporting the Yellow economic circle equals supporting Hong Kong’s future"

(3 May) Netizens called on Hongkongers to support shops in the Yellow economic circle during the Labour Day Golden Week. Actress Lee Yee-man - who participated in the anti-extradition protests - and Civic Party Chairman Alan Leong volunteered as "shopkeepers for a day" at the Yellow shop, Agape Garden at Cheerful Court, Ngau Tau Kok. One worked as a salesperson and the other as a cashier to sell goods made in-house.

Actress Lee Yee-man and Barrister Alan Leong volunteer to run "Yellow shop": "Supporting the Yellow economic circle equals supporting Hong Kong’s future"

Image

Lee was delighted to see an endless queue and a huge turnout. She also called on Hongkongers to continue supporting the Yellow economic circle after Golden Week. "Supporting the Yellow economic circle equals supporting Hong Kong’s future. Whether or not we, Hongkongers, can rely on ourselves to eke out a real locally-based economic system all depends on you." Lee said she had heard a lot about Agape Garden and was very interested in their "fellow cookies and fellow egg rolls". Upon receiving the invitation to be a "shopkeeper for a day", she immediately accepted it. "I believe we must support Hongkongers and local products."

Having witnessed Hongkongers' mask shortage and their reliance on consistently scarce imports of epidemic prevention supplies, Lee believed that the experience served as a reminder to Hongkongers to produce locally and not solely rely on imports. Tourism, which is one of Hong Kong's major economic pillars, could also use more products with local characteristics to attract more tourists from around the world.

Lee: Public figures should not avoid talking about what's right

Lee has been a TVB actress for over a decade. She left this year after her contract ended. She revealed that she left in hopes of space with greater freedom to "say what I want and do what I should do". Lee believed that public figures should not avoid talking about what was right. "As a Hong Kong artist living in Hong Kong, why can't I speak out when there's a problem?" This was why she hoped to film more works that are truer to society in the future.

When he first encountered the electronic cash register, Leong - who was responsible for transactions - said he was worried about making mistakes because he was not familiar with it. The long queue also put a certain amount of pressure on him. However, he felt that being a shopkeeper was more fulfilling than just patronising Yellow shops.

Leong believed that Golden Week had multiple meanings for Hongkongers. One was to allow Hongkongers with the same values to gather and acknowledge and support one another. Secondly, it was a protest against the tyrannical regime. He was confident that Hongkongers would, in their own ways, continue supporting the Yellow economic circle after Golden Week. "The regime's immorality, injustice and perversion worsening by the day. I believe Hongkongers will protest and resist in their own way."
