Police hurt retailer business, Pepper-sprayed reporters and Civilians in Shopping Mall

Netizens called to 'Shop and Sing' at Shatin's New Town Plaza at 19:30 on May 1 in Hong Kong. Massive police force cordonned the shopping mall at around 19:00, citing gathering ban, ordering shoppers to disperse and arbitrarily handing out fine tickets.

Many shops closed early shortly afterwards, missing a good day for more businesses to make up for the loss during the coronavirus epidemic.

At the mall, peaceful civilians held hand-made cardboards and banners with pro-democracy messages. Some called for investigating Rupert Dover, a senior police officer, who allegedly broke property rules.

A police cordon was set up far more extensive than necessary covering the entire atrium. Riot police continued their aggression when clearing out the shoppers, pepper-spraying reporters and legislators and shoving civilians through narrow corridors at the risk of stampede.

Hong Kong Bar Association Demand Explanation from Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs

The Hong Kong Bar Association (the “HKBA”) is an organization regulating barristers in Hong Kong.

As the China Liaison Office (“LOCPG”) has previously asserted that the Central Government enjoys “comprehensive jurisdiction” over the HKSAR and the power of “supervision” together with the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (“HKMAO”).

HKBA issued a letter to Tsang Kwok-Wai, Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs on 27 April, copying Chief Executive Carrier Lam and Secretary of Justice Teresa Cheng. The letter demands an explanation on the newly asserted constitutional position and power of “supervision”.

In the letter, HKBA expressed that many of its members and the public at large are surprised on the HKSAR’s reversal of its position that LOCPG is an office set up in HKSAR that constrained by Article 22, as well as the power of “supervision” together with the HKMAO.

Hong Kong Bar Association Demand Explanation from Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs

https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/20111

Excerpts of the letter:

• If it is the considered view of the Hong Kong Government that the LOPCG functions here without it being concerned with the restrictions set out in Article 22, the obvious question to ask is under what legal authority does the office operate, what are its functions and what are the limits on its powers?

• I believe that you owe it to the public to answer these questions and give a full exposition of the relevant legal principles and rules. I am sure that you will agree with me that an unsupported assertion will not do when an important constitutional issue is at stake.

• Is the LOCPG statement that it has the power of “supervision” correct? What is meant by “supervision” and what is the source of this claimed power? Since when has this claimed power existed? What is the extend and how is this claimed power exercised?

•....entities such as ICAC, the Director of Audit, the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission and, of course, the Judiciary. Does the claimed power of supervision extend to these bodies?.....

•Does the claimed power of supervision extend to the Department of Justice?…...

Hong Kong Dissident Bookseller Reopens Bookstore in Taiwan in a bid for Freedom and Democracy

A year after he fled to Taiwan, Hong Kong bookseller Lam Wing Kee opened "Causeway Bay Bookstore" on April 25 in the capital, just days after being pelted red paint by three men who were arrested a day after the attack.

Lam credited Taiwanese government for granting him the assistance needed in reopening the bookstore that was originally run in Hong Kong but was forced to shut down after booksellers including Lam were abducted by China.

Aside from sending 300 police force to stand guard and offer protection, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen sent a flower basket which wrote "Let justice flow on like a river and righteousness a never-failing stream".

[Editor's note: "To Freedom” is a line from the film “Detention” which portrays life in 1962-Taiwan during the martial law era. The film won several Golden Horse Film accolades in 2019.]

Beijing Loyalist criticizes Hong Kong students for being disrespectful and urges for 'moral education'

MTR Corporation chairman and former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Frederick Ma was again appointed to be the chairman of the governing council of the Education University of Hong Kong again. Due to personal reasons, his term will end on 31 Dec 2020.

In his interview with Commercial Radio Hong Kong, Ma criticized that some teachers used liberal studies as a tool to express their discontent, which reflected the problem of this subjet. He hoped that the government can develop moral education because one "cannot be perfect with only wisdom but no integrity". "If you were a top student without any moral standard, how can you contribute to the society?", said Ma.

Liberal Studies Subject Public Exam Questions

Questions of this year's HKDSE Liberal Studies paper revealed to be surprisingly sensitive. Paper 1 discusses the use of mobile phones, globalisation and the freedom of press, while in paper 2, candidates can choose 1 from 3 questions about conservation of Peking opera, Chinese state-owned enterprises and smart city.

It was suspected that candidates' political stances will affect their grades, yet the Hong Kong Professional Teacher's Union stressed that markers will remain politically neutral.

Australia does not accept threats and intimidation from China, a strong stand from the prime minister

In recent days, the Australia prime minister, Scott Morrison and his government have constantly asked for an inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus. The reactions of China is overdramatic. Does it scare of the truth behind the scene?

On Monday, China’s ambassador to Australia, Jingye Cheng, threatened to use economic coercion to Australia, in terms of tourism, education and commercial products.

On Tuesday, the Chinese embassy released details of a call from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) to embarrass the Morrison government, claimed the Dfat secretary said it was not the time to commence the review now and Australia has no details of the proposal.

Meanwhile, Hu Xijin, the editor of the state-run Global Times, wrote on Weibo that ties between Australia and its largest trading partner, China, were likely to deteriorate, just like relations between Beijing and Washington. Hu, further accused Australia as always making trouble, "It is a bit like chewing gum stuck on the sole of China’s shoes.”

Today, China’s vice-foreign minister, Le Yucheng claimed that China supports the international investigation and the Wuhan Institute of Virology had an interview stating that it has no intention or capacity to engineer any kind of virus.

Frankly, no one is going to trust China's explanation of its relationship with coronavirus. CCP is good at breaking promises and faking evidence, with perfect examples like the deterioration of the one country two system in Hong Kong and the arrests of pro-democracy activists.

This makes perfect sense to pursue an independent inquiry into the coronavirus pandemic, start from Wuhan, which has the first officially reported case coronavirus. Isn't it the responsibility of a leading country, as China always claimed to be?

Police Fine Pro-democracy Activists Despite Protesting in Group of 4

On April 30 morning, police fined 8 pro-democracy activists from the League of Social Democrats (LSD) for allegedly violating the gathering ban, despite that the group demonstrated in 2 groups of 4 people.

The activists protested against the police's ban on the Labour Day march organised by the pro-democracy Confederation of Trade Unions, citing the risk posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The LSD’s chairman, Raphael Wong, tried to reason with the police, but the officers asked him to "talk to the court" instead. Wong accused the police of using the ban on social gatherings to suppress freedom of assembly in Hong Kong. He vowed they would not pay the HK$2,000 fine and would fight the case in court.
