A black hole above Hubei

GreenPlumCooksPumpkin 31 Jan, 10:42
Protective equipments arenā€™t available on the market across the country, as all factories are speeding up manufacturing production for Hubei. They arenā€™t available around the world, too, as ethnic Chinese have purchased them all to deliver to Hubei. But medical staff in Hubei donā€™t have protective equipments, too, as well as medical staff across China. Is there a black hole above Hubei?

This is also the biggest question I have as I read the news these few days. On the one hand, the frontline staff have run out of supplies. On the other hand, there is this encouraging news that generous help is coming from everywhere. But where are the promised supplies?

>BlackLinePrincess
This is no different from the vegetables incident in Shouguang. The Shandong province says the vegetables have been delivered, but Hubei says they havenā€™t been received. It is a mystery to where they have gone. Of course, we all know where they have been sent to now. So, if the Hubei government doesnā€™t say to where the other supplies have gone, there is no point for us in asking.

Hong Kong Police Arrest Civilian for Carrying Respirator Mask Filter Amidst Mask Shortage and Wuhan Pneumonia Outbreak

19:44 | Tuen Mun
At Tuen Mun Town Center, a civilian was arrested after the police found a respirator mask filter in his bag. Although the man explained that it was for work, the police still had him arrested.

It should be noted that the anti-mask law, which was forcefully enacted by the Hong Kong government through the invocation of its emergency powers in October 2019, has been lifted by the court in Hong Kong.

While wearing a mask can reduce the chance of contracting the new coronavirus, the shortage of mask supply has left the public in fear. Worse still, the Hong Kong government was unable to obtain a steady supply to the population, forcing citizens to look out for themselves.

Professor Yuen Kwok-yung: 1.4 Million Citizens May Potentially Contract Wuhan Pneumonia

Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, head of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, issued a stern warning for the public during his phone interview in a Commercial Radio Programme on 1st February. He reiterated that the Wuhan Coronavirus is highly contagious. If it has a similar infection rate as influenza, 1.4 million citizens may potentially contract the virus.

Yuen stated that there had yet been any signs of alleviation of the epidemic, with cases confirmed in Thailand, Singapore and Japan. Thus he emphasized that Hong Kong must uphold all preventive measures.

ā€œLetā€™s imagine this. There are 7 million residents in Hong Kong. If we assume the virus is as contagious as influenza, and 1/5 of the population will be infected, that is 1.4 million people. Letā€™s say the death rate is not 2% but 1%. We can expect a casualty of 14 thousand.ā€

Yuen also stated the research so far indicated a lot of patients might not display any symptoms. ā€œIf we adopt the same measure as we did during SARS, and hospitalize any patient with a high fever, it would be easy to spot those cases and put them into isolation, in order to stop any possible chain of infection. However, many of the currently infected showed little to no symptoms.ā€

He urged citizens to wash their hands frequently, with those without masks strongly advised remain at home and maintain a 1-2 metre distance from people.
