Medical staff goes on strike to demand lockdown on border with China, worried resource constraints would put medical staff in unnecessary danger
In Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the anger was immense as witnessed on the first day of strike, which was initiated by medical staff to urge for lockdown on HK-China border to curb the widespread of the Coronavirus.
The strike showed medical staff's clear resentment that Carrie Lam administration refused to block the HK-China border, while doctors and nurses are fighting against the epidemic in the front line. With extremely limited resources, it is equivalent to exposing the lives of doctors and nurses to unnecessary risks, which is no different from pushing them to death.
Hong Kong people, in general, are supportive of the strike and their objectives are well aligned : Seal the Hong Kong-China border, halt the spread of Coronavirus.

Employees of the aviation industry are often exposed and vulneravle to the risk of Coronavirus. Hence, labour unions are initiating possible actions to protect their members by organizing a strike. The Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Flight Attendants Association called for an emergency meeting on February 8 to solicit membersā support for a strike.
Some staff members of Cathay Pacific have called in sick today through February 8, said the Association Chief Executive, Sienna Miller in a radio interview this morning.
Miller criticized management of Cathay Pacific for delaying their decision to stop flights to and from China, which was described as an open flood gate for mainlanders to leave China, disregarding health of flight attendants. Sourcing for face mask has probably been one of the biggest and toughest tasks of every family in Hong Kong since last week.

Government: Building Isolation Camps Without Bidding; Refuses to Answer the Origins of the Materials
Apple Daily quoted various sources and revealed that the government is expanding the Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village for a temporary isolation camp. At the moment, around 11 white container houses have been placed at the basketball court and the cycling area, each installed with windows and doors with an estimated size of about 100 square feet. The newspaper learned that the contractor of the project was China State Construction International Holdings Limited (CSCI), a Chinese-funded corporation. While the expansion would be rounded up within 1-2 months, the camp would be functional during the construction. Sources doubted that the containers were second-hand containers manufactured in China, and were worried that they were sent to Hong Kong without standardized disinfection treatment.
The Apple Daily has received several photos taken when CSCI staff and workers began construction, who also held a banner that said āActivation of the Hong Kong Emergent Epidemic Prevention Isolation Centre Projectā. A CSCI employee revealed to the reporter, that this project still remains in the dark. Staff members of the companyās Hong Kong headquarters knew little about it, and he had no clue how many in the photos were from mainland China. āOn the one hand you are building isolation camps; on the other hand, you are attracting mainlanders to come to Hong Kong. The inconsistencies!ā

Riot police arrested a man in Mei Foo Sun Chuen on Sunday, February 2 during a rally organised by residents to refute the government's plan to convert a heritage site into a quarantine camp nearby one of the top 5 most densely populated residential community in Hong Kong.
The man was sighted at the scene, chanting slogans. In the course of arrest, riot police deloyed pepper spray and aggressively shoved reporters aside.
Editor Note: While the appeal to revoke a court ruling which uplifted the Government's mask law is still ongoing, it has become necessary for citizens to wear face masks to protect themselves from the deadly coronavirus. Police officers have also been wearing surgical masks instead of the regular black ones while on duty.

On the first day of medical staff's strike organised to pressure government to seal borders with China to prevent widespread of coronavirus, TVB, a pro-Beijing broadcaster in Hong Kong, showed a street interview with a cancer patient who expressed faithful understanding and unconditional support to medical staff.
The lady in the interview said, "actually I am a cancer patient and i am undergoing targeted therapy. But no matter how long the therapy could be delayed, I will still support the medial staff's strike."

On the first day of medical staff's strike organised to pressure government to seal borders with China to prevent widespread of coronavirus, TVB, a pro-Beijing broadcaster in Hong Kong, showed a street interview with a cancer patient who expressed faithful understanding and unconditional support to medical staff.
The lady in the interview said, "actually I am a cancer patient and i am undergoing targeted therapy. But no matter how long the therapy could be delayed, I will still support the medial staff's strike."
