Huawei Tracks User's Privacy for Emirati Government

[ABSTRACT]

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei endorsed an Emirati messaging app downloaded by millions of users that was reportedly being used by the United Arab Emirates government to track user's conversations, movements, relationships, appointments, and pictures.

American officials familiar with a classified intelligence assessment, along with a New York Times investigation, claimed that popular mobile app ToTok is actually an Emirati spying tool. The app was introduced in recent months and has been downloaded millions of times from the Apple and Google play store, the report said.

On Thursday, Google removed the app from its Play store, according to The Times, saying that ToTok violated unspecified policies, while Apple removed ToTok from its App Store on Friday.

China Threatens Denmark for Huawei 5G Deal

According to Danish newspaper Berlingske, Chinese Ambassador FENG Tie threatened ministers from the Faroe Islands, a Danish semi-autonomous region, that a trade deal would be called off. That would hurt Faroese fishing exports unless Huawei was allowed to build the 5G network for the region. This contradicts the Huawei’s claim that it is a private company with no ties to the government of communist China. Huawei has denied any knowledge of the threats. In spite of warnings from the Danish Ministry of Defence that Huawei poses a security risk, the Faroese government still tries to proceed and even seeks a court injunction to keep secret of the deal with China.

China Seeks Volunteers to Play a Role as the Consulate’s “Eyes, Ears, Mouths and Hands” in Countries like Canada and Japan

The Globe and Mail, Dec 19, 2019

//Chinese government representatives are recruiting and training volunteers to help ensure the “safety” of their citizens living in Canada.

The initiative has been undertaken by consulates in Calgary and Toronto, as well as in missions around the world. The Chinese consulate in Osaka says in a recent post that it hopes the volunteers can play a role as the consulate’s “eyes, ears, mouths and hands.” But the call-out for volunteers has raised concerns among pro-Hong Kong activists and China experts who question the work China wants the volunteers to do.

Gloria Fung, president of Canada-Hong Kong Link, said she considered the volunteer initiative a very “aggressive and inappropriate exercise” of consular services.

“I think it is an attempt of the Chinese consulates to legitimize the Chinese Communist Party’s building of its network in Canada,” she said in an interview.

She said Chinese diplomatic institutions categorize overseas Chinese, including those who have become Canadians, as their own nationals. She said Chinese Canadians do not need to seek help from the Chinese government.//

A Candlelight Vigil in support of Hong Kong Pro-democracy Movement at Amsterdam Dam Square on Christmas Day

The event was organized by two native Dutch people. They have been following the coyrse of the protests in Hong Kong since June. They admire and support Hong Kong people for their pursuit of freedom and demoncracy.

The organizers said that this movement is not only a matter that concerns the people of Hong Kong but countries from all around the world can also see how the Chinese government is suppressing freedom. The organizers believe that if they don’t stand up for Hong Kong today, other countries will not support the Netherlands either if the Netherlands is facing the same kind of suppression someday.

New Zealand rugby star Williams joins #Ozil in speaking out against #China's Xinjiang camps

By Ben Westcott, CNN, Dec 23, 2019

//New Zealand rugby star Sonny Bill Williams has joined soccer player Mesut Ozil in speaking out against alleged #HumanRights abuses by the Chinese government in the country's far-western Xinjiang region.

The US State Department estimates that up to two million Uyghurs and other Muslim-majority minorities have been held in huge detention centers in Xinjiang, where they have allegedly undergone political re-education.

Former detainees and #Uyghur exiles claim it is part of a program designed to eradicate their culture and customs, turning them into Chinese-speaking patriotic citizens.

The Chinese government has repeatedly denied the camps are "detention centers," saying instead they are voluntary "vocational training centers" targeted at de-radicalizing citizens.//

Man Demanded to Open Confidential Documents to Police, Threatened With Arrest When Refusing to Comply

[Editor's note: The authorities' infringement on citizens' and businesses' privacy is worrying. On the same day, police had exposed the identity document of a reporter on live stream for 40 seconds, displaying no regard of the protection of personal privacy: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/14135]

Riot police entered Harbour City twice to stop and search citizens. Mr Chan, an insurance practitioner, said that when he was searched, the Police accused him of possessing a letter stamped with “confidential” which they claimed did not belong to him. They even attempted to open the letter. Chan explained to the officers that the letter belonged to his client, and the privacy of his client must be respected, but he got retorted by the Police, who claimed that “privacy is not everything.”

The police demanded Chan to call his client for confirmation. Chan did as he was asked, but his request of asking the officers to turn on the loud-speaker was rejected. He was dissatisfied about this, ”What? Then how can I know what you actually heard? I need to protect my rights too!” In the end, the client confirmed that he did give the letter to Chan. Chan continued to reason with the Police, who warned him to stop provoking and inciting citizens on site, or he will be charged with obstructing Police work.

After his jump, the youngster said that he did not want to "be forced to disappear". Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Kwok Ka-chuen stated on the police press conference, that "some citizens has been brainwashed by the enormous amount of fake news on the web. This group of people started to have irrational panic and hallucinations of being sent to some unknown location after being arrested or being murdered after arrest. Those are all ridiculous thoughts."

Kwok stressed that the police force "act by the law". He also pointed out that most arrestees did not receive unfair treatment, "After having experienced custody and investigation by the police, they thought that police officers had been professional throughout the process.
