Over a hundred riot police stormed into alleys, and stationed at Shantung Street and Fa Yuen Street. During the period 2 citizens were easy and steady, and let their chess game go on. Guess the chess game would not cause the charge of illegal assembly.

Police Stormed JieGengeHK and Arrested Employee

[Statement] Shame on Police Violence!
Catering and Hotel Industries Employees General Unionļ¼ˆa HKCTU memberļ¼‰statement on police unreasonable arrest of member employees

At Christmas eve midnight, many people near the restaurant Jie Genge HK in Mongkok requested to enter the restaurant for cover from the police. The restaurant let them in based on humanitarianism and human instincts.

Afterwards, the police attempted to enter the restaurant for searching. Two restaurant staff did their best to protect their customers and stop the police from entering the private place without a warrant. They were at the end arrested for the ridiculous reason of obstructing police execution of duty.

The union is outraged and castigates the policeā€™s unreasonable arrest of the two catering industry workers.

These two staff fulfilled their duties of their profession to protect customers from unnecessary disturbances. However, this resulted in their arrests for the reason of obstructing police officersā€™ work. This is utterly ridiculous.

In fact, this is not the first time that police brutality puts the catering industry in danger. In early November, a manager of McDonald rejected the policeā€™s demand to search the restaurant to avoid scaring the children inside. This restaurant manager was arrested for the same reason of obstructing police execution of duty.

This incident not only seriously affects the safety of employees in the catering industry but also destroys the trust between customers and the industry. HKCTU has to stand up and voice out against injustice and mass arrest.

HKCTU fully supports our fellow employees committed to their profession in the catering and hotel industries. They can contact the union for help. The union will do its best to assist them.

Last but not least, HKCTU urges employees in the industry to unite and organise unions. Itā€™s time to strengthen the power of ā€œyellow-ribbonā€ unions in support of the protest. The catering industry unions under the pro-China Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (HKFTU) would never speak for individuals that have suffered police brutality. It is necessary for us to establish unions supporting protests and speak against injustice.
