Photos: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/13688

Reporter from Stand News attended a press conference organised by a district councilor-elect on Dec 21, addressing noise problems with Chinese street performers in Tuen Mun Park. At 2:45pm, 5-6 riot police stopped and searched the reporter at the entrance of the park.

Riot police shouted and demanded the reporter to “stay put” and “stand still”. The reporters then asked for an explanation, but none was given. The cell phone used for filming was snatched away. The police ordered the reporter to empty their backpack and turn off their cell phone. The reporter's bag was torn in the process.

After checking the reporter’s ID card and press ID, the police officers warned them to “stand very still” and “don’t run around like we’re playing Catch”, “you (reporters) are not in charge” and “you should stop filming when you’re told to do so”.

The riot police asked the reporter to reveal any news and information they have on activities in the Tuen Mun Park area. The police also pressed the reporter to explain why they brought helmet and protective gear, claiming that these equipments are not needed in normal interviews.

The police reasserted that journalists should be completely cooperative once stopped for searches: ”Stop filming when you were told to. You’re being searched now.” After 10 minutes of interrogation, the reporter was allowed to pack their belongings to leave. However, no compensation was given for the torn gear bag.

Stand News strongly condemns the police officers for using violence to obstruct reporters' work.
