Chinese Soldier Cited Xi Jinping's Order to "curb violence" When Removing Barricades in Hong Kong

On November 2019, Chinese soldiers left the barrack in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong to remove roadblock set up bt protesters. Many see this as an violation of the city's constitution Basic Law.

Reporters interviewed a member of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), who led the soldiers to the scene. He said in Mandarin, "This is self-initiated. Curbing violence in Hong Kong is everyone's responsibility!" He then asked the media not to raise question further.

At around 4pm, soldiers from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) inside the Kowloon East Barracks kept an eye on the people who were clearing barricades set up by protesters in Hereford Road, near Lam Woo International Conference Centre.

A few minutes later, around a hundred soldiers rushed to Hereford Road, and cleared the obstacles on the road using broomsticks and other tools (see photo).

Meanwhile, 36 riot police were cleaning up outside HKBU Communications and Visual Arts Building.

At 16:57, the PLA marched.

[Editor's note: According to Article 14 of Hong Kong Basic Law, the PLA "shall not interfere in the local affairs of the Region" and any deployment should be requested by the Hong Kong SAR Government:

"The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region may, when necessary, ask the Central People's Government for assistance from the garrison in the maintenance of public order and in disaster relief."]
