When the tigers take over the streets of Thrissur.
Known as the Tiger Dance, Pulikali is one of Keralaโs most vibrant folk traditions, celebrated during Onam. Specially trained Pulikalikkar** transform into tigers and cheetahs with intricate body paint, dancing to the powerful beats of traditional percussion.
With a 200-year-old tradition in Thrissur, Pulikali is a living celebration of Keralaโs artistry, community and festive spirit.

โข He is also known as "The Wizard" for his magnificent game. He scored over 400 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948.

โข Major Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad.
โข His father was in the British Indian Army, and he played hockey in the army. The family settled in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India.
โข At the age of 16, Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army following the steps of his father. After joining the army, he used to play army hockey tournaments.
โข On a tour to New Zealand, as part of the Indian Army hockey team, Chand impressed one and all with his brilliant game.
โข Later he played field hockey for the United Provinces team from where he got selected to play for the Indian team that went to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
โข In the 1928 Olympics, the Indian team won gold defeating their opponents by huge margins.
โข It was the countryโs first gold medal. Dhyan Chand showed the world his magic of controlling the ball and gained the title of the 'magician of hockey.'
โข In 1934, Chand was made the captain of the Indian team. Due to his strong grip in the game, India won the field hockey event in seven out of eight Olympics From 1928 to 1964.
โข That includes winning three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936. The period from 1928 to 1960 is also known as the golden era for hockey.
โข After 34 years of service, Chand retired from the Indian Army on 29 August 1956. The Government of India honoured him the same year by conferring him the Padma Bhushan. He died on 3 December 1979 from liver cancer at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi.
โข In 2002, the National Stadium in New Delhi was renamed Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
โข Prime Minister renamed Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award after the appreciable performance by Indian Men's and Women's hockey team at Tokyo 2020.
