Female and male flowers of hazel, Corylus avellana. The catkins contain numerous, petalless male flowers which produce abundant pollen. The pollen is wind dispersed. The tiny pink styles of the female flowers capture pollen from the wind. On fertilisation, the female flowers grow and by autumn will become hazel nuts.
The flowers do not need petals. Wind pollinated plants do not need to attract insects with bright coloured petals and nectar, but they do need to produce a, great abundance of pollen so that the female flowers have a chance of being pollinated by the random movement of pollen in the wind. The catkins and female flowers emerge before the leaves, because leaves would only reduce air flow and capture wind borne pollen. The abundance of windborne pollen means that it is a major cause of allergies such as asthma and hay fever.
