Six days ago the Minister for Health was saying that Ireland would test 15,000 a day. This morning, a major clamp-down on testing was announced. So why the U-Turn, and why is the rest of the media so quiet about it?

ON THIS DAY: 25TH MAY 1846: Birth of Michael Davitt, One of the Leaders in the Land League and activist in the 'Land Wars'

He was born in Mayo the second of five children in an Irish speaking family. They were evicted from their home in 1850 due to rent arrears and the family emigrated to England. They settled in a poor Irish community in East Lancashire. At 9 years of age, Michael went to work in a cotton mills and at age 11, his arm was badly injured in the mills and had to be amputated, he was dismissed without compensation as was customary at the time.

His plight came to the attention of a local benefactor who arranged for Michael to get a good education in a local Methodist school. He later worked in a local post office, as a bookkeeper and typesetter and started to study at night, learning about Irish history and what was happening back home in Ireland.

In 1865 he joined the IRB and soon became part of the inner circle of his local group to become organizing secretary for Northern England and Scot

It’s understood that the CCP did considerable work behind the scenes to ensure that Dr Tedros would take the position in an election that saw Dr Tedros accused of covering up three separate cholera outbreaks when he was Ethiopia’s Health Minister.

ON THIS DAY: 25TH MARCH 1920: BLACK AND TANS ARRIVE IN IRELAND

The infamous and notorious Black and Tans will not be forgotten in Irish history. 100 years ago, the first tranche of them arrived from Britain, mainly recruited from the unemployed veterans of World War 1. They had 3 months training and their pay was ten shillings a day. Their ‘uniforms’ were mixed, some with Khaki pants, some with black pants and vice versa with jackets, there were different hats, belts, coats and boats; their mismatched uniform got them the name ‘irregulars’ but the name that has stuck with them most is Black and Tans. Though they served with the RIC, they never acted as policemen, their experience being in the trenches of World War 1. They did not have the experience or training to deal with ordinary civilian populations and assumed the role of an occupation army as the War of Independence was raging and the English authorities needed more ‘help’ controlling the natives.
