Android 15 Beta 3: New smart home control screensaver.

Android has long offered screensaver functionality that can turn on when the screen fades on a charger or dock. In the third beta, Google has built in the Dreams app to Pixel devices, which previously served as the source of screensavers for the Pixel Tablet.

Along with this change, there's a new "Home Control" option under Settings / Screen / Screensaver. When you activate it, when you put your phone on charge and wait for the screen to dim itself, a screensaver will appear on the screen with control of your favorite smart home devices from Google Home.

The Adaptive Timeout feature that I discovered back in April is here in Android 15 Beta 3, at least on my Pixel 8 Pro! It doesn't seem to work for me, though.

Adaptive Timeout "automatically turns off your screen if you're not using your device."

UPDATE: Okay, I think I figured out how Adaptive Timeout works: It checks your proximity sensor to see if anything is in front of it (like the inside of your pocket). If so, it shortens the screen timeout and turns the screen off early.

This'll be useful for people who like to have longer screen timeouts but who forget to turn the screen off manually.

Google Pixel 9 series will feature an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint scanner.

The Pixel 6 was the first Google device where the company started using Goodix's under-display optical fingerprint scanners. However, at release, users reported issues with both unlock speed and scanning reliability. Though things have improved somewhat in subsequent updates and in the next Pixel generations, the fingerprint scanner performance in current Pixel devices still leaves a lot to be desired.

According to Android Authority, Google will finally switch to an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in the Pixel 9 series devices (except Fold with FP in power button), namely Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) — the exact same model found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Ultra sonic scanners tend to work better and faster than optical scanners, so this change in the new devices will improve the user experience when unlocking a smartphone.

The Pixel 9 series will get updated camera modules and support for 8K video recording.

Thanks to a source inside Google, Android Authority has shared info about the camera modules that the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL and 9 Pro Fold will be equipped with:

• Main module

It's just like the 8 series here: A 50MP Samsung GNK wide module.

• Ultra-wide module
The Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL will get a brand-new Sony IMX858 (1/2.51" - 50MP) module.

• Telephoto module
The 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL will get the same set of cameras. The telephoto module will get the same sensor as the wide-angle module - Sony IMX858 (1/2.51" - 50MP) with optical stabilization. Last year's Pixel 8 Pro used a Samsung GM5 (1/2.55" - 48 MP)

• Thermometer
Both Pro models will retain the same infrared thermometer that was introduced in the Pixel 8 Pro — Melexis MLX90632.

• Front Camera
The regular Pixel 9 will have the same sensor used in the 8 series — Samsung 3J1, but this year it will get autofocus. Previously, autofocus on the front camera was exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, while the regular Pixel 8 used fixed focus.
The Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL will get the Sony IMX858 (1/2.51" - 50MP) as the front sensor.

• 8K video recording
The Tensor G3 and the Pixel 8 Samsung GNK main camera technically support 8K (7680×4320) video recording at 30 fps. However, Google has not yet implemented the feature.

However, it is reported that a future version of the Pixel Camera app will have support for 8K 30FPS video recording, but which models will support it is not yet known.

Pixel 9 series devices will charge faster. Leaked new charging brick.

Leaked reports from Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) have revealed the appearance of Google's new 45W charging brick (model code: GW8L7). Compared to the previous 30-watt adapter, the new version will also get an updated design with rounded shapes.

The NCC reports also revealed approximate charging speeds, but the actual values from the spec sheet are still unknown. For example, the 9 Pro XL is reported to have 32.76W, which suggests that the advertised charging speed will be at least 35W (vs. 30W in the Pixel 8 Pro).

The battery capacities of all models have also been revealed:

• Pixel 9: 4558 mAh
• Pixel 9 Pro: 4558 mAh
• Pixel 9 Pro XL: 4942 mAh
• Pixel 9 Pro Fold: 4560 mAh (1183 mAh + 3377 mAh)

🤖 Google has released Android 15 Beta 4.

Beta 4 is the last scheduled update in the Android 15 beta testing program, which means that all APIs and system behaviors are final. Important changes in this beta:

• Removed PNG-based emoji font
Android 15 removes the legacy PNG-based emoji font file (NotoColorEmojiLegacy.ttf) meaning that some Android 15 devices such as Pixel will only have the vector-based file. With Android 13, the system used the vector variant while keeping the font with PNG for compatibility.

For adaptation, developers are advised:
• Use platform text rendering. You can render text to a bitmap-backed Canvas and use that to get a raw image if necessary.
• Make sure your text library supports COLRv1 fonts. The FreeType open source library version 2.13.0 or later supports it.
• As a last resort, you can bundle the legacy emoji font (currently 10.1MB) into your APK.

🐞 List of fixed issues in Android 15 Beta 4:

Developer-reported issues
• Fixed an issue with contrast that made some elements in Quick Settings Tiles hard to read. (Issue #340944691)
• Fixed an issue that in some rare cases caused some Pixel devices to get stuck in an unbootable state if the device was factory reset shortly after an OTA system update was installed. (Issue #349860641, Issue #349978813)

Other resolved issues
• Fixed an issue where sometimes an Android Virtual Device (AVD) using an Android 15 system image failed to launch if the AVD was launched in embedded mode.
• Fixed an issue that sometimes caused app notification settings to fail to be restored when restoring a device from backup.
• Fixed an issue for Pixel Fold devices that prevented a user from continuing Face Unlock enrollment if the device was folded or unfolded during the process.
• Fixed various other issues that were impacting system stability, connectivity, performance, usability, and camera.

Bluetooth resolved issues
• Fixed a bug which prevented the Digital Car Key app from performing low latency scans when running in foreground.
• Made a fix to use custom UUIDs instead of standard HOGP service UUID in Android head-tracking service.
• Use head-tracking codec capabilities to detect transport support in LE Audio stack.
• Made a fix to prevent immediate rejection of Bluetooth pairing requests when there's a mismatch between the API-suggested transport and the transport observed by the Bluetooth stack, potentially improving pairing success rates.
