Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1: A new *hidden* Pixel Launcher experiment will let you remove the "At a glance" widget.

One of the biggest sore spots for Pixel users has been the inability to remove the "At a glance" widget from the home screen, but it looks like Google has heard the pleas and started working on a way to hide it.

In the Pixel Launcher settings, there will be a new toggle to "Add At a glance to home screen". And when you turn it off, you'll be able to put anything you want in its place.

For now, this switch is hidden from users behind a developer flag.

Possible flags:
ENABLE_SMARTSPACE_REMOVAL
SMARTSPACE_AS_A_WIDGET

Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1: Screen recording and Сasting of a single app.

In the windows where you start recording or casting to the external display, there is a new drop-down menu with a choice between "Single app" and " Entire screen". After selecting the first option, a menu pops up to select the specific application you want to record or cast.

When recording a single app, the show screen touches option is gone, but it's still there with the " Entire screen" option.

Google is working on the 'Cubes' app, which is part of the Play Store. At this stage, it is difficult to say what the app will look like. All we have at the moment is a shortcut that opens up a blank page and a 'Cubes entry point widget'. That said, both…
🏪 New details on Google Play's 'Cubes' experiment.

In February this year, I wrote about Google Play working on something called 'Cubes', which will have a separate launcher shortcut and widget, but it wasn't possible to open it at the time. However, the latest version of Google Play gives us a glimpse of what the Cubes interface will look like.

So, from the looks of it, Cubes will collect content from various apps and present them as a single feed, which can also be sorted into categories using the carousel at the top, or open a particular category directly from the widget.

You'll be able to customize the order of these categories, as well as choose which apps to display content from in a given Cubes category. How this will look in the feed itself is not yet known, as it is currently empty.

*Reminder that this experiment is not currently available to users, and I'm just showing the current appearance.

Meet iPager! This is how Google is once again pressuring Apple to adapt RCS to iOS. The company has released an Apple-style video introducing the fictional iPager device: "iPager is a device that uses outdated messaging tech, like Apple uses when texting…
Apple has announced that RCS support will be coming to the iPhone next year

In a statement to 9to5Mac an Apple spokesperson said the company believes RCS will provide better compatibility for cross-platform messaging.

Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.

The RCS integration will improve the messaging experience between iOS and Android platforms and bring features such as read marks, text input indicators, high-quality images and videos, location sharing with others within text streams and more. Unlike regular SMS, RCS can work over both mobile data and Wi-Fi.

However, this doesn't mean that Apple is opening up iMessage to other platforms. On the contrary, the company is rolling out RCS separately from iMessage.

RCS messages on iOS will still be tagged with green bubbles

Apple confirmed yesterday that the company is going to add RCS support to iOS next year. While this messaging standard between Android and iPhone users will bring a number of iMessage-style features, something remains the same — RCS message bubbles will still be green.

Apple has confirmed to me that blue bubbles will still be used to represent iMessages, while green bubbles will represent RCS messages. The company uses blue bubbles to denote what it believes is the best and most secure way for iPhone users to communicate, which is iMessage.

AI Core app Play Store listing is up. Android 14 Beta 3 for Pixels introduced a new built-in system stub app called AI Core ("com.google.android.aicore"). Google usually embeds such stubs to then roll out updates to them via the Play Store. The app's listing…
AI Core app has received an update.

Almost immediately after the Google Play page appeared, the company started rolling out an update for the stub app. The new version of the APK has the number 0.release.582652206.

But nothing can still be said about the purpose of this app. The new version of the app features a settings page accessible from Settings / System / Developer options, which includes a single switch "Enable AiCore Persistent" available only on Pixel 8 Pro. The description of the switch reads:

"Allow AiCore to carve out memory and run persistently. "

There are also strings inside the app that mention requesting permission to bind to the AiCore service:

AICoreServiceBindPermission

Permission to bind to the AICore Service.

The update has already started rolling out via Play Store, most likely only for the Pixel 8 Pro for now.

Pixel 8a wallpapers have been leaked online

As with the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, Andrew Zuckerman is responsible for the design. This wallpaper set continues the mineral theme and includes the following minerals (and their dark variations): Titanite, Barite, and Hematite. There is also an additional wallpaper codenamed 'Porcelain'.

The uncompressed versions are posted in the comments.
