The Risk of Outsourcing the Mandate of Self-determination

In the 19th century, the feudal system ended, a social and political system in which landholders provided land to tenants in exchange for their loyalty and service. Without realizing it, we slowly slipped into a similar dependency. Except this time, multinationals and oligarchs are the those who control us.

What we are currently observing is moulding into customers above human beings. The mandate of self-determination is being withdrawn under the pretext of convenience and protection. The following examples show you how it happens.

1. Digitalization of the Financial Sector - who of you is still paying with cash or has a large amount of money hidden in the mattress or alike? Payments are now being done contactless, also under the premise that Covid could spread by touching cash. It is convenient but requires great confidence in Black Rock, JPMorgan and Co.

2. Food Self-Sufficiency - who of you would survive in case of a food shortage? How many people are still growing their own food? More than 70% of America's packaged food is ultra-processed; nourishing food is increasingly becoming scarce. The big profiteers are the largest pesticide manufacturers, Bayer-Monsanto and Syngenta, and the food-processing industry. The latter benefit from the people's convenience. How often do you consume products from Nestlé, Unilever, P&G, Kraft, and Pepsico?

3. The Health Paradox - consuming unhealthy food leads to obesity. More than 70% of Americans and 50% of Europeans are overweight. The numbers have more than doubled within the last 30 years. Together with politicians, the food industry is mainly responsible for this. For persons with severe obesity, life expectancy is reduced by as much as 20 years, and nobody cares. Obesity is a real pandemic, but consumption and profit are considered more important than health.

4. Health Paternalism - contrary to obesity, Covid does not significantly impact someone's life expectancy. Nevertheless, the majority of the population is willing to give up freedoms to feel safe. Preferring to leave the responsibility to others is a trend that can also be seen here. The big profiteers of the current situation are again multinationals such as Amazon (small shops had to close), the pharmaceutical industry (quickly authorized experimental drugs), and Big Tech such as Microsoft (home office instead of real meetings).

5. Big Tech Isolation - TV, the internet and smartphones keep us isolated and controllable. Even in social situations, people often pay more attention to their phones than to real-life interactions. Unfortunately, many do not recognize that big tech manipulates public opinion and makes the customers the product. Did you know that the pictures you upload to Instagram aren't yours anymore but belong to Zuckerberg?
