▪️ India vs. China: Who’s Winning the Poverty Fight?

India and China have both tackled poverty, but in very different ways.

China has lifted 800M people out of extreme poverty since 1978 (World Bank 2023), slashing its rate from 66% in 1990 to under 1% by 2022. How? Rapid growth—GNI per capita jumped from $250 to $12,850—and targeted rural aid, including relocating 10M people to modern villages.

India isn’t far behind. The 2022 MPI shows poverty fell from 55% in 2005 to 16% in 2021, lifting 415M. NITI Aayog says 248M escaped poverty between 2014–2023, with rural poverty down to 7.2% (SBI Research), helped by free food for two-thirds of its 1.4B people.
