French Government Proposes AI-Assisted Video Surveillance for 2024 Paris Olympics

In a first for France, the government is proposing the use of automated video camera surveillance during the 2024 Paris Olympics. The system would rely on AI algorithms to detect any suspicious or abnormal activity among the crowds, which are expected to exceed 13 million visitors. The AI algorithms would analyze footage from fixed CCTV cameras or drones and automatically flag any behavior deemed suspicious or abnormal, alerting the police to take action.

However, this proposal has sparked protests from several rights movements, who argue that it is a move towards stricter police control.

Cloudflare is offering its clients free access to post-quantum encryption

▪️ Cloudflare, one of the world's largest content delivery networks, is offering post-quantum cryptography to all its clients for free.

▪️ Post-quantum cryptography is encryption that cannot be defeated by quantum computers. The company believes privacy should be a fundamental human right and post-quantum security should become the new baseline for the internet.

▪️ Cloudflare has been working on post-quantum encryption standards since 2018 and claims that over 99% of websites that support post-quantum cryptography are its clients. The company has already protected over 1 billion HTTP requests since 2019.

▪️ In May 2022, US President Joe Biden signed a national security memorandum requiring government agencies and urging the private sector to prepare for the emergence of quantum computers, which will be able to break encryption in the future.
Continuing from yesterday's post, we highly recommend watching a short YouTube video about the issue of post-quantum cybersecurity.

Currently, users' data is securely protected by RSA-algorithm encryption, which cannot be hacked by even the most powerful supercomputers in a million years. However, quantum computers have the potential to break this encryption within the next twenty years. It would only take thousands of physical qubits to determine multiples of the RSA code.

Although modern quantum computers, such as IBM's 400-qubit processor, are not yet powerful enough to achieve this, it doesn't mean that users' information is completely safe. Malefactors could employ a long-term strategy of "store now, decrypt later," which could prove remarkably effective.

The video by Veritasium explains how quantum computers could be used to break information security and why engineers need to think in terms of 1000-dementional space to avoid potential security breaches.
Scientists decide whether we are alone in the universe

They use machine detection to identify eight previously undetected "enquiry signals" from about five nearby stars.

The team worked on the Breakthrough Listen project, a privately funded project looking for technological developments among the 1 million nearby stars, 100 nearby galaxies, and other Milky Ways.

As part of the project, they applied the algorithm to a preliminary study collected by the Green Bank Telescope in the US. Already analyzed are 150 terabytes of data representing observations of 820 nearby stars.”

Business world brought us two inspiring cases from Australia

South Australia’s Department for Education has been using Microsoft products for improving education and develop outcomes for young South Australians.

Its System Performance division uses a platform edAnalytics Hub by a tech provider Exposé to leverage the full power of data analytics for educational purposes. Woolworths is expanding the rollout of its self-checkouts using cameras and artificial intelligence in stores across Australia. The self-checkouts use camera vision and AI to detect when items aren't scanned correctly. If a product is not scanned a short video is replayed for the customer on the self-checkout and the customer has an opportunity to rescan it.

It was first trialed at one of Woolworths’ store a year ago but is now being used at more than 250 stores in three Australian states.
