ok so before any of this existed there was just a puppy stuck on a bamboo stalk. early 2000s, some random photo, nobody even remembers who took it. the dog is just climbing. clinging on. not falling.

it got posted on DC Inside (디시인사이드), basically Korea's version of 4chan back then, and it just took off. no marketing, no push, it spread because everyone who saw it went "lol same." people started calling him 개죽이. it's a pun, 개 is dog, 죽/竹 is bamboo. bamboo dog. that's the whole name.

and it just kept going from there. it ended up on protest signs. news segments referenced it. ask literally any Korean in their 30s or 40s about 개죽이 and they'll know exactly what you're talking about, no explanation needed. it's one of the oldest memes in Korean internet history.
funny part is he was doing diamond hands before diamond hands was even a phrase. dude was just hanging onto bamboo for his life, but it's the same energy as everyone white knuckling their bags right now.
