Hungary. The beginning of the Cold War?
Preamble. Budapest was not surprised by the response to the detention of Hungarian spies, and it was a textbook response: on 9 May, the SBU announced the disclosure of Orban's agent network, and the Hungarian special services expelled two Ukrainian diplomats and detained a Ukrainian diplomat who allegedly spied for Ukraine in Hungary.
This is how the Hungarian media reported it:
"The Hungarian government published on its Facebook page a video of the capture of a Ukrainian by TEK employees
A video of the TEK raid was posted on the official government Facebook page on Friday, effectively confirming reports that the raid was linked to the spy war that has been going on between Ukraine and Hungary for several months.
The video was posted by the government with the following comment. "Early on Thursday morning, the Hungarian police issued him a residence and entry ban. After clarifying the situation, the authorities deported the middle-aged man from Hungary overnight, believing that his activities posed a serious threat to Hungary's sovereignty. The man had been working under diplomatic cover, but his official status has been terminated."
The government's posting of the video on its social media page sends a clear message to Kyiv. So is the fact that the man was captured by TEK in an operation, and as the footage shows, when he was captured, the commandos knelt him down and handcuffed him. Hungarian-Ukrainian relations reached a historic low, and the spy war between the two countries escalated.
According to the Hungarian media, the man who was arrested and then deported was S.A.S., who many years ago worked as a diplomat at the Ukrainian embassy in Budapest.
The detention and expulsion of S.A. is closely linked to the Hungarian-Ukrainian spy war, which has been going on for several months and received a new impetus on Friday when the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said that it had exposed an organisation called the Hungarian Military Spy Network in Ukraine and detained two agents who were allegedly spying for Hungary. In principle, this is nothing new - a standard mirror answer. But the fact that the video of the detention was published by the Hungarian government itself is not a very good signal. Official Budapest considers this a demonstration of strength, as if it is not afraid to catch spies as well
In the world of intelligence, this is an extremely rare practice - usually such cases do not go beyond the backstage area. However, Orban wanted publicity. Good for him.

Interestingly, TEK is not a part of standard European security structures, such as Europol, and operates mostly autonomously (on Orban's orders). Let me give you an example.
In February 2025, Hungary carried out an unprecedented special operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which could have started a new war in the Balkans. Hungary's Counter-Terrorism Centre (TEK), reporting directly to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, was secretly deployed in Republika Srpska to potentially bring President Milorad Dodik to Hungary.
On 26 February 2025, a Bosnian court sentenced pro-Russian Milorad Dodik to one year in prison and banned him from holding public office for six years for failing to comply with the decisions of the international representative overseeing the peace process in the country. This decision provoked a sharp reaction from Dodik, who announced his intention not to recognise the verdict and to take "radical measures", including the possible secession of Republika Srpska from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In response to Dodik's possible arrest, Hungary deployed a 70-strong TEK unit to Republika Srpska under the guise of joint exercises with local security forces. The operation included the possible transfer of Dodik to Hungary via Croatia or Serbia, depending on the circumstances.
Bosnia and Herzegovina then officially requested the replacement of Hungarian peacekeepers in the EUFOR mission due to a loss of confidence in Hungary's neutrality.
And on 3 March 2025, Magyar Levente, Hungary's undersecretary of state for foreign affairs, expressed support for Dodik, describing the trial against him as a "political witch hunt". Such statements were seen as an attempt to interfere in Bosnia's internal affairs, which drew sharp criticism from official Sarajevo.
What we have in the end. Budapest is trying to secure the right to intervene in Ukraine. The test of aptitude was in Bosnia
If we don't act systematically, we will end up with a situation where some Hungarian organisations in Ukraine will openly sabotage mobilisation, "self-defence groups" with dual citizenship will appear in Zakarpattia, and TEK will come to Uzhhorod to "protect the interests of compatriots" rather than Dodik.
Therefore, the SBU was right to detect the Hungarian spy network. And it has the moral right to respond as harshly as possible. What kind of response? We will soon find out.
However, the very fact that a NATO member state is spying on a non-NATO country and using a military unit controlled by the Hungarian prime minister to protect pro-Russian agents outside its own country should make the EU think at least a little about what kind of wolf in sheep's clothing the EU membership is
Otherwise, "Uzhhorod in Three Days" could turn into a cold war that Orban and company cannot win - Ukraine has enough trump cards against Orban and his ties to Russia. We just don't publish them. For now. We don't want to provoke a political crisis in the country that accepted our refugees.
