The Empire of the Offended: How Russia is Reanimating the Spirit of the USSR to Justify the War Against the West

Preamble. In the article "Putin's New Enemy at the Gates? The Same as the Old One" by Nico Lange, published on 9 May 2025 on the CEPA website, analyses how Putin uses the history of the Second World War to justify Russia's current aggression, in particular against Ukraine

The Kremlin has turned World War II into a religion and the West into the devil. At the centre of this ideology is the phantom pain of a vanished empire.

There is no room for chance in Putin's rhetoric. In his world, there are no authentic protests, independent states or democracy as a form of political organisation. There are only conspiracies, spies and geopolitical traps.

Any internal failure is a conspiracy of the West. Any attempt by a neighbouring country to break away from Moscow's influence is an "anti-Slavic project" of the CIA. The main thesis is that Russia is always under siege. Ever since the days of the Tatar Mongols, Napoleon, and Hitler.

In this paranoia, the "enemy at the gates" is not only a metaphor, but also a cheap tool for mobilising society, justifying repression, and maintaining power.

Russian propaganda rewrites the history of the Second World War

Hitler and the West are now almost synonymous.

Bandera is the collective West.

Ukraine is Germany in disguise in 1941.

In this new "alternative" version of history, Russia has "never" been an aggressor. Even Katyn is a provocation, and the "liberation" of Berlin is an act of sacrificial "love".

The Kremlin is openly resorting to historical revisionism and creating a new, "sacralised" reality in which a modern Russian soldier is not an invader but the grandson of a veteran who "reports to his grandfather that everything is going according to plan".

According to Moscow's rhetoric, Russia is not at war against Ukraine. And not against NATO. It is against "fascism".

However, in this struggle, the word "fascism" has lost all connection with Mussolini, Hitler or racial theories. Now a fascist is:

A Ukrainian who speaks Ukrainian.

A German who supplies weapons to Kyiv.

A Russian who is against the war.

This is a passport to murder. The Kremlin calls everyone it doesn't like "fascists" and thus justifies any violence. No need for arguments, no need for facts: say "fascist" and you can bomb, imprison, destroy. The word has become a universal justification for crimes

The irony and farce is that in its efforts to fight "neo-Nazism", the Russian state is gradually copying the very features that were once inherent in the Third Reich

The cult of the Führer, where Putin is not just a leader, but a "sacred" figure. The militarisation of society: from schools to TikTok, everything is in the style of "be ready to die for your country". Propaganda is the only truth, there is no alternative opinion - it is criminalised. Purges, denunciations, fear

Fighting against "Nazism", Russia itself became it - with Russian specificity and an Orthodox cross in its hand.

Without an enemy, an empire crumbles.

The post-Soviet space did not want to be a vassal, Europe did not agree to a sphere of influence, and Ukraine chose freedom. In response, the Kremlin switched on the self-destruct mode: instead of integration, it chose war, instead of the economy, it chose weapons, instead of the future, it chose phantoms of the past.

An external enemy is convenient. It unites, it explains failures and creates an atmosphere of siege. In such a state, it is possible to continue repression, replace social benefits with militarism, and explain any defeat as "enemy sabotage".

If a lie is repeated long enough, it becomes the "truth". The same mantra has been heard in Russian society for decades:

"Russia is a 'victim' of the West, which is afraid of us, hates us and wants to destroy us."

This idea has been drilled into Russians from early childhood in schools, on television, and in the army. And now, in 2025, when 20-year-old Russians are being buried on the streets of the imaginary Yekaterinburg, relatives do not ask "why". They know the "right" answer - "so that there is no war here".

The Russian propaganda machine has long lived in its own Narnia. Even if reality shouts something different, it does not penetrate the armour of faith. Because this faith is not about facts, but about identity. To be Russian is to be in eternal conflict with the rest of the world. To be right is to believe in a lie.

The bad thing is that this collective psychosis is not only an internal affair of Russia, but a real threat to the entire region. A state that cannot live without war will project this war endlessly onto others. That is why the Balkans, Moldova, and the Baltic states are at risk.

The Kremlin is looking for new points of tension where it can "find a fascist". And it will find him even in the library of Guadeloupe, if necessary.

For a long time, the West did not believe that Russia's perception of reality was really bad. It all looked too absurd - the idea that in the twenty-first century someone could seriously talk about the "military liberation of Kyiv from the Nazis" seemed like a sick fantasy.

At this time, the disease was progressing in Russia. And now it is no longer a question of whether the Russians will climb somewhere. The question is whether the world will have time to react

The biggest fear of the Kremlin and Putin is that without the idea of an external enemy, everything will fall apart. That is why he is not at war with the fascists, but with the future, because there is no place for him there anymore.And especially for our partners, I would like to remind you that the Kremlin is waging a semantic war: it is changing the meaning of terms, taking normal words, twisting them and producing lies that look like the truth.

This is a war in which a "fascist" is anyone who disagrees with the Kremlin. "Russophobia" is the unwillingness to submit to Moscow. "Denazification" means mass killings and deportations. "Liberation" means the destruction of cities.
"Humanitarian aid" means Russian armoured vehicles in peaceful cities

Words have lost their meaning and become tools of zombification. Now they are weapons of mass psychosis that destroy critical thinking.

The meaning of "victory" has changed, among other things

Under the guise of "anti-fascist" rhetoric, the Kremlin has destroyed everything that the Red Army soldiers really fought for in 1941-45.
"Victory" in the Kremlin's version is not peace, but eternal war. Not freedom, but total loyalty. Not memory, but a phantom.

When words cease to have meaning, any reality can be explained in any way. Words and words alone can destroy the truth

The Kremlin fights with both missiles and words. It deliberately confuses everything so that no one understands what is true and what is false, and who is really to blame.

In such a reality, it is impossible to win with weapons alone - even after the victory, there will be millions of people whose minds have been implanted with false meanings.

Ukraine is fighting not only for borders or territories. It is fighting for meanings, for language, for truth, for the very ability to think.

Russia is building an empire not on facts but on myths. Its soldiers are fighting not for the truth but against it. The frontline of this war is not only Donbas and Crimea, but the mind and the ability to distinguish between good and evil, real and imaginary, freedom and obedience.

The Kremlin realised long ago that it is easier to rewrite history than to change the future. It is easier to sow doubt than to build trust. It is easier to instil fear than to offer hope. That is why his war is a war against a future in which Putinism has no place.

That is why the Ukrainian resistance is a resistance to total lies, in which words have become weapons of mass destruction.

Because if we do not call war a war, the aggressor an aggressor, and victory a victory, then instead of the truth, only a silent "Z" will remain in the shadow of faded meanings.

Ukraine today is the only country in the world that is not just holding back its army. It is holding back a new darkness that is trying to erase the very ability to think.

The only bad thing is that many people have not understood this.
